One of the best reviews of this episode I saw described it like this: "Ozymandias" is a hellish and unrelenting nightmare, but "Granite State" feels worse because it's like waking up the next day and realising the nightmare was real.

There's an interview with Jesse Plemons, Todd's actor, who talked about asking Vince what the character was supposed to be like, and he said Vince told him "What do you do when there's a raccoon that runs out in front of your car, but if you swerve left you go into traffic, but if you swerve right you go into the ditch? You hit the raccoon." That's Todd's character. He's a genuine sociopath, who doesn't act in malice, but doesn't really see anything wrong with what he's doing. Everything he does, no matter how monsterous, is just kind of indifferent to him, and it also explains why he's so "polite". Todd is a "nice" person who sees anything he does wrong as just something that needed doing. It's why Todd would beat the shit out of Jesse until he's black and blue (because he had to), but then bring him ice cream later to be polite. Todd is the epitome of "No hard feelings".

I've heard that after Jesse killed Gale some of the audience was confused why he was so bothered by it. He did what he had to do. After that Vince and Co created Todd as a way of saying "that's the kind of character you want? This is what he would be." Such a brilliant ending to this episode and such a well defined character in Walt. As soon as you heard the Elliot and Gretchen disparaging his contribution you instantly knew how he would react.

The final scene beautifully illustrates what has driven Walt this entire show. It all started with Grey Matter, and an overqualified genius being so bitter that he has to live the normal life, because he sold his future as a potential billionaire, away for pocket change. That was the starting point. Not the cancer, but the miscalculation he made. That planted the seed of bitterness and ego into him. The cancer just brought all that out, and both Hank showing him the bust, and a familiar face escaping the scene, gave him an outlet for his ego, his wounded pride, his missed opportunities and his genius. And now, at the end of the road, having lost everything, it's the same Grey Matter thing, that sparks him into taking action. Beautifully in character for him.

I don't think Walter goes back because of his ego, even though that might be partially the reason. I think he knows giving the money to the Schwartzs is the perfect, and probably only way he could get that money to his family, since Flynn doesn't want his money. He does his Hiesenburg routine and threatens them with "hitmen" because he wants to be 100 percent sure his family gets the money, he was never going to harm the Schwartz's. But I get your point

In the reaction, you pointed out if past Walt saw Flynn's reaction to the phone call, Walt probably wouldn't have gone down the road he did. In the end, Walt still shows signs of humanity and feels some love towards the people that mattered in his life. His remaining humanity makes him a bit more redeemable than Todd. Todd has no connections and nothing in his mental make up that really makes him a human other than existing just to exist. If someone asked Todd to kill a room full of children, Todd would ask what day and time is the most convenient for their schedule. The actor who played Todd did an amazing job in the role.

I'd put it this way: With Walter there still is something to redeem, no matter how little or how much of a moster he has become. Wirh Todd there isn't. There just seems to be something missing in Todd. It's questionable to diagnose people without any quolifications but Todd just seems like a violent sociopath. Operating word, violent. Not everyone with that "condition" (I think I'm getting real offensive here.) becomes like Todd but then again, they don't need redeeming.

The strangeness of the comparative - Is Walt is an intellectual sociopath. He can reason everything, ALL his actions, were correct and necessary. While Todd is a working class / criminal sociopath who reasons that anything that gets him ahead is right enough for him. So because of Todd's lack of intellect, I don't think you could change him - but if you gave Walt a challenging job that kept him engaged intellectually and rewarded him properly for his ability, he could avoid needing to embrace that worst aspect of himself and be a better man than he was... possibly. And that possibility of change is the difference between Todd n Walt, just a possibility.

The last scene in the bar is supposed to make people think that's what's happening to Walt, that seeing Gretchen and Elliot talking about him angered Walt, and him disappearing before the cops arrive and the BB theme playing is supposed to make us think he's out for revenge or something like that. But it's not "Heisenberg", it's Walt on his path of semi-redemption who just figured out how to get his money to his family.

Good and bad is a matter of perspective. What's good to one person may be bad to another and vice versa. It all depends on how you look at things. Walter is a drug kingpin so of course he has to do some bad things but he's doing it for a good cause, to take care of his family after he's gone. He also admits that he gets a personal thrill out of it because he knows he's good at it. But at the end of the day you can tell the man still loves his family and he does have some level of remorse in his heart which means there's still good in him
@Movieman103963 ай бұрын
He does love his family, but he doesn’t prioritize them over his own ego and insecurities. If it was truly all about setting his family up, he would have swallowed his pride and taken the grey matter job in episode 5 and allowed Gretchen and Elliot to pay for his treatment, especially since he had NO reason to be bitter towards them, seeing as he left the company because of his own insecurities. That’s why Vince Gilligan said he stopped sympathizing with him after that, because it’s no longer ‘my family needs to be taken care of after I’m gone’, it’s ’I have to be the one to save my family, no matter what it costs’.

In the flash forward, we see him with Walter White's hair, Heisenberg's beard, and a new pair of glasses, visually suggesting that he is both and something new at the same time. We see it in his actions in the finale too -- the calculated ruthlessness and luck of Heisenberg combined with the genuine compassion of Walter White being able to accomplish everything he wanted in one episode, which neither half of him could in 5 seasons.

You raised an interesting question on how Gus would’ve handled someone like Todd. We saw how Mike got pissed at him for bringing a gun and making the executive decision to shoot the boy, and Mike was the perfect arm for Gus because he never did anything unnecessarily. Bottom line is Gus wouldn’t never sniffed the idea of acquainting himself or his operation with the likes of Jack’s crew, but that it was a depraved necessity that Walt’s operation would have to fold them in, to provide muscle sans Gus and his influence. And here we are.

Todd is absolutely a sociopath. He does have a small capacity for empathy, but it is very narrow and limited and never gets in the way of what he thinks is necessary. He is emotionally kind of 5 years old to a certain degree, but he doesn’t feel emotion. He does feel sentimentality, and certainly respect, but never above whatever greater purpose he is engaged in. He feels regret, even for horrible things, but for him it is the kind of regret you might feel over missing a phone call with a friend you will see in a few days anyway. I keep thinking of his clumsy, awkward flirtations with Lydia that feel like a little kid who has a thing for his home room teacher, but he doesn’t yet know what love is or how it really works, nor even understands that he doesn’t know. He regards Jessie as a kind of pet and the way he takes care of him and looks after his wellbeing is much as one might a guard dog, who lived its life chained to a post in the back yard, barking at the mailman.

This is a really dope answer. I wonder if it was the writers, the actor, or a little bit of both who influenced Todd. It’s truly fascinating whenever he’s on screen compared to everyone else. Tuco is straight menacing but even he reminds me of people I’ve seen in life. Todd freaks me tf out.

@@JamesVSCinema I think it’s the writers and the actors. Gilligan wrote the hell out of this thing from jump, but a lot of elements evolved into what they did only because the actors brought it. Saul wasn’t supposed to be such a big part of the show and went on to become the focus of an equally amazing spinoff show entirely on the strength of Odenkirk’s performance. Everyone on this show came to the set to work and they got it done on every episode. The entire Salamanca family is fairly terrifying in their own right, btw, but I won’t say anymore on that. ;) I’ll just say that Better Call Saul is going to knock your socks off.

I'm surprised James didn't recognise that Meth Damon is the main character in Fargo Season 2.

Andrea's death still remains the most vile thing this show did to us

I skipped past it this time. No need at all to see that again
