She didn't lose her entire memory. She lost the memory surrounding a traumatic event. Then with the car accident she couldn't recognise her family's faces at first but gradually regained it. Head injuries do crazy things to the brain, my friend fell out of a car at high speed, ripped his head open and fractured his skull leading to a bad head injury. Do you think he was the same the next day? No, it literally CAN happen overnight. You don't realise until you witness it.
