Dick Van Dyke’s humor still plays very well after all of these years. I struggle to think of any other who might do it better. I grew up watching these episodes each week and feel that the innocence and simplicity of this kind of television should be reintroduced to youngsters of today.. if only they hadn’t been conditioned to choose violence and rudeness as sources of laughter as they seem to be.

Not my all time favorite episode, but DVD at his absolute finest. No one could have done this better.

Thought it was interesting that DVD opened with doing the commercial himself! I don't recall that from those years, although I was very young then. I do remember that detergent from around then, powdered laundry soaps were all they had back then.

Dick Van Dyke is an amazing pantomimist. Evidence in this episode, and in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, in the part of a marionette, who performs without strings.

One of my fave episodes. The kids don’t understand. After three decades of teaching I learned to adapt my presentation to my audience. This is not uncommon for adults speaking to children. Modified MacLean’s method cursive writing around the classroom. Cursive has been abandoned now in elementary school.

I learnt cursive in 6th grade in the 90's. We all looked forward to it as a privilege to the older students 😂 I suspect not many other schools at that time were teaching it. It's a shame, it looks so much more beautiful and really helps with greater control and dexterity when writing. Something that can be applied to any style of writing.

I think Laura Petrie was television's Jackie Kennedy.

There's a later episode where she's the spitting image of Jackie, even down to the pillbox hat

I feel for Rob in this episode. Even tho Richie is just a first grader boy, is sad that you're children feel ashamed of you/what you do for a living.

@@stephenstumbke1721 “Was proven “. Americans don’t understand past participles of irregular verbs. Pay attention to this. I know what I’m talking about. I have taught English for 33 years including half of that at university and over a dozen books on grammar, Use of English and pronunciation. Hey! It’s a job. BTW British speakers don’t understand the difference between Passive Voice construction an Present and Past Continuous Tense. Nobody’s perfect but in his case poorly educated in English grammar. People 100 years ago understood it more than people today.

I think that if the child has true respect for his/her father, what he does for a living won’t be important 😊

Jim Carrey in sonic the hedgehog paid tribute to Dick Van Dyke and this episode in particular. The scene where Dr Robotnik pretends to get his head bitten off by the fake t-Rex, he uses the same move Rob does in this episode where he makes it look like his head is gone.

Interestingly the theme of this show is like it's unseen pilot originally called Head Of The Family with Carl Reiner as Robert Petrie, which never sold to the networks where Carl's Robert Petrie was a comedy writer whose son was ashamed of him. Looks like they went with the same story plot but fit it in for Dick Van Dyke which was a lot funnier and entertaining. Fit better for Dick than Carl.

MTM was so thin. Remember “ the camera adds ten pounds”.
@CamhiRichard Жыл бұрын
I think that was referring to the cinemascope lens used in movies of the '50s, which stretched everything, especially in close-ups. Also the first TV cameras.
