Hello Daisuke, I came back to this video simply to comment that I just had the absolute pleasure of watching what I think is the most uncut version of "The Devils", I really am lost for words. But your words here are simply perfect, we need a release! This needs much more attention and love and hate! I love your passion for it so much, slowly but surely I too am falling in love with it.

Hey Daisuke, I would love to see a Criterion of Sunset Boulevard, and more Wilder films in general. Memories of Murder by Bong Joon-Ho would be amazing addition too. It would be amazing to get more Kubrick and Hitchcock, for example Vertigo, Rope and a Clockwork Orange. The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer would be couple of contemporary films I'd love to see added to Criterion Collection. Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, Network, Fail-Safe and The Verdict would be great too.

SJSFilms, how are you doing today my friend? MEMORIES OF MURDER... this would be great as Korean films are sadly under-represented in the Criterion Collection at the moment. I would love to see VERTIGO go to the Criterion Collection as it is my favorite film ever. I think I watch that film at least once a month. I love your mentioning too of films like FAIL SAFE and THE VERDICT and NETWORK. I love Lumet very much. Speaking of which, I recently saw the MoC release of THE OFFENCE, with Sean Connery. Have you seen it? It was a mind-blowing experience.

I'm good buddy, how are you? I totally agree on Korean films being under-represented, there are many great ones, I'd love to see some Park Chan-Wook films like Joint Security Area and The Handmaiden in the Criterion Colllection. You watch Vertigo once a month wow I love the film, but I couldn't watch it that often. Only film I rewatch several times a year is my favorite film of all time The Shining (I'd love to see this on Criterion). Sidney Lumet is a top 5 favorite director for me. I haven't seen The Offence, but I'm aware of it and I saw your comment on it on Letterboxd. I need to buy the Masters of Cinema release sooner rather than later. Have a nice weekend mate!

Great video buddy! I agree we need to see more Hou Hsiao-hsien in the Criterion collection, I would love to see Kurosawa's Stray Dog and Red Beard have bluray upgrades. I also think they should release some Tsai Ming-liang titles.
@DaisukeBeppu
@DaisukeBeppu 6 жыл бұрын
Tsai Ming-liang.. you are so right and I am already regretting not mentioning that in the video! Which film do you think would be a good candidate? I would say What Time Is It There, but if you had to pick one, what would it be? Stray Dog and Red Beard... those are fine DVDs but yes you are right there too, in that they would be so well served as upgraded blus. I suppose that if we are speaking of Kurosawa, it would be nice also to have THE QUIET DUEL in the collection as well, as well as breaking out MADADAYO from the huge AK box set and making it its own release. What do you think?

Honestly, you are one of the best movie-focused channels on KZbin! I love your videos and how polite you are. Keep up the amazing content. I would love to see Béla Tarr, Zhang Yimou and Alejandro Jodorowsky get some representation in the collection as well as some more Kaufman/Jonze and Haneke like Synecdoche, New York, Adaptation, Her, The White Ribbon, and Caché.

Dear Gannon K., what a really nice thing to say. Thank you so much! That is so kind of you. And, oh my gosh... BELA TAR! I should have mentioned this but I didn't. And another viewer commented to me about ZHANG YIMOU... To Live utterly transformed me when I saw it.... and JODOROWSKY... of course... this would be fantastic. Would it be too cliche of me to say El Topo?? I remember my friend took me to see that and the HOLY MOUNTAIN when they were re-released in theaters some years ago, and we saw it in a theater in NYC, with Mr. Jodorowsky there taking questions. It was such an amazing experience.

Probably my favorite video of yours so far. Great choices! I would add "Los Olvidados" to this list. Anything which has no definitive edition or boutique label already attached to it. At least Woody Allen got some box sets via Arrow. There are so many. I always found it odd that "Life During Wartime" is in the Collection but not the superior "Happiness." A lot to think about. Excellent topic!

I would love to see some Hungarian movies in the collection so the world could see some of the masterpieces. My personal favorite is Abigél (1978). It’s actually a mini series. Or another very intriguing wonderful movie is On Body and Soul (2017). I could go on!
@DaisukeBeppu
@DaisukeBeppu 6 жыл бұрын
filozsofia thank you so much for this great comment! It truly is wonderful because it shows how inexperienced I know of Hungarian cinema... so, if you don’t mind, please go on! What are the titles that one should have? Of course I and many others will mention Bela Tarr cinema, or István Szabó, etc., but for me at least my knowledge and experience with Hungarian cinema ends there I’m afraid. So I am so curious and happy to hear about what other recommendations you have! If you have a moment, please let me know! After reading your great comment I looked online about ON BODY AND SOUL and it looks very intriguing!! As for Abigel, this too looks intriguing and also the source novel as well. Have you read the novel?

Daisuke Beppu You are such an inspirational person! Thank you for your interest! I just found your channel recently and I am amazed. Every one of your videos shows your wide knowledge about cinema and you are so humble about it! One can learn a lot from you! So as you mentioned some of the critically acclaimed directors it shows that you are more knowledgeable than most people! Yes I read the book Abigél by Szabó Magda and it is one of my favorite books also! I would be so happy to see it in the Criterion Collection I actually submitted a request about it directly to them. 😊 Unfortunately it has never been released on Blu-ray only on DVD and only one release has English subtitles. On Body and Soul is a very philosophical movie that sucks you in and you will thinking about it for days. It was up for Oscars this year in Foreign film category. Oh and the cinematography is just amazing. I wish it would’ve won! I thought I share more of my personal favorites with you, some of them are popular and some are very underrated and forgotten. I start with the ones that I think would fit into the Criterion “style”. Sinbad (Szindbád 1971) Nobody’s Daughter (Árvacska 1976) Édes Anna (1958) Opium: Diary of a Madwoman (Ópium: Egy elmebeteg nő naplója 2007) Demimonde (Félvilág 2015) The following titles are also personal favorites but some of them are mainstream cinema and others just purely entertaining. An American Rhapsody (2001) - This movie is a coproduction with the US and probably the most known on this list, although it is very underrated in my opinion. Kincsem (2017) Children of Glory (2006) Poligamy (2009) Chameleon (2008) Also you could check out the short movie Mindenki (2016 Sing) Thank you for your interest! As I said these are my personal favorites and there are some other critically acclaimed movies out there like Son of Saul, The Fifth Seal or Mephisto. I’m so delighted humbled by your interest! On the other hand I am interesting in Japanese culture and cinema I would be interested in your recommendations!

filozsofia reading your kind and thoughtful response has been an absolute joy and educational experience for me, for I know nothing of most of these films. Thank you so much for this. I learn so much. Now I have heard of AMERICAN RHAPSODY but as of yet not had a chance to see it. I think I will try to track that down. Are there many films that are made available in the United States, or is it worth it for me to spend my time looking at European releases? Again, I am learning so much that I printed out your comment and posted it on my desk. I need to study this much more! Thank you for being my teacher! As for my recommendations of Japanese cinema, I suppose I should start with the big ones: Ozu and Kurosawa... practically any film by them is a gold mine. Now the filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-Eda is also very popular and his films are stunning. I have been a great admirer of his works for some time. Also he is not Japanese, but I strongly recommend Taiwanese filmmaker Edward Yang. His films especially YI YI and A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY are epic masterpieces of modern family life and drama.

Daisuke, I feel very honored! Thank you. Unfortunately to my knowledge none of these movies are released in the US. Currently I live in the US and it is hard to get my hands on Hungarian movies. Even in Hungary a lot of them are hard to find. Most of them has only DVD releases in Hungary. Only couple of them has Blu-ray releases from my list, one is the movie KINCSEM (Hungarian release) and I believe there are multiple Blu-ray releases of ON BODY AND SOUL (German, Dutch, Italian, Hong Kong). Thank you for your recommendations, I will check them out if I get a chance. It would be amazing if you would make a video about "Beginners guide to Japanese/Eastern movies" one day. :)

Hi filozsofia, thank you again for your follow up comment! This is great. So, I understand from your comment that even now it is difficult to get Hungarian films in the United States through releases there. This is too bad, but I hope the situation changes soon because it would be so amazing for people like me to experience this treasure trove of quality from Hungary. And thank you for letting us know about the possible availability of ON BODY AND SOUL elsewhere. And thank you for your suggestion for an awesome video topic! I am currently working on a video that will hopefully be uploaded this week or next, on that very topic! You and I seem to have a psychic connection!! Best regards. --Daisuke

Interesting picks as usual, Daisuke! By the way, are you a fan of Zhang Yimou? I think some of his classics should certainly be in the CC - especially Raise the Red Lantern and To Live. Also the films of Iranian director Majid Majidi (Children of Heaven, The Color of Paradise, etc.).

Hey Daisuke! I've really been loving the content you've been producing!! Are there any particular animated films you'd like to see get the Criterion treatment?
@DaisukeBeppu
@DaisukeBeppu 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ryan, thank you for your nice comment! I really am grateful for it. You ask a great question! So there are a few animated films in the current collection already, but certainly not enough. So I am all for animation being included with more regularity. For me, I think a film like BELLADONNA OF SADNESS would be great (though I understand that this has been released in blu by a different label in the US). Also, there is an anime precedent with Akira having been a CC laserdisc, so Akira would be welcome. I’d also love to see Brothers Quay films (which was also released on Voyager Laserdiscs in two volumes). And Svankmajer... I’d also love to see some of the early Nick Park animations get CC treatment. There is a wonderful animation laserdisc released by Voyager called Worlds Greatest Animation which features a bunch of animation shorts, and Creature Comforts is featured. I could go on, but let me ask you! What do you think should be included?

I agree William Friedkin definitely needs to be part of the Criterion collection! WB, unfortunately probably wouldn’t license out the Exorcist. It’s part of their signature catalog titles. I would assume at some point they will do a ultrahd version of it. Cruising however, is interesting. It has no blu ray release, and that perhaps could be a welcome addition to the Criterion collection.

my theory is that criterion is going to do something big for the upcoming spine number 1000. And that something is Citizen Kane.
@DaisukeBeppu
@DaisukeBeppu 6 жыл бұрын
paul casino yes... I agree with your theory. Granted, I can understand if someone were to say that the “00” spine numbers are Not always allocated to “great” films (like say Spine no. 100); however, it seems that a number like, say 500, is a particularly milestone of a number, and that was allocated to the Rossellini War Trilogy box itself (which is a very symbolic gesture), and I’d say that the number 1000 is an even bigger milestone, especially in the context of a DVD and blu ray label. By the way, even if it isn’t KANE, i would be happy if 1000 is given to MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS... though my sense is that this will not happen because it is my sense that Criterion wouldn’t announce this early the title that is to be 1000, but rather Criterion would rather have it as a surprise. What do you think?

Great topic, and great video. I haven't seen all the films on your list but they all sound great for the collection. Titles like The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw, and Enter the Dragon would be fantastic with a Criterion treatment. I'd like to add the original Halloween, Jaws, and the first Friday the 13th. I think they're all horror classics by their own right. Other films I'd like to see added are: Mommie Dearest, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, Goodfellas, Silence, and Kundun. I love the classics but it would be fantastic to see a few modern day films-that were influenced by the classics we love added to the collection. The list really is endless, I think, about films we could add. Great choices, great presentation, great topic.

Hi Movie Chatter! How are you doing lately? I should have known you would mention HALLOWEEN 😆. By the way, I saw a video you did where you had on a PJ Soles T shirt 😍 kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqC2oWanncxmhdE By the way, what is your favorite Halloween sequel? You may know this already, but HALLOWEEN was released (twice!) as a CC laserdisc, and so there is a Criterion connection. So it would not be “out of place” at all to have it back in the CC. I love your choices, and especially the Scorsese films. I think Kundun is going to be released on blu elsewhere soon and so that might not happen, but it would be nice to see for example Silence. Also, I am a big Friday the 13TH fan also!! My favorite has to be Part Five, with crazy martial arts Tommy. Is the first one your favorite?
@MovieChatter01
@MovieChatter01 6 жыл бұрын
Daisuke Beppu you caught me with the PJ Soles shirt. 😂😂 I was hoping some people would make the connection. I'm doing well, hope you are, too. I did not know about the Criterion laserdisc for Halloween but it does make sense. I think the classic horror movies need to have a place in the collection because of the influence on modern films. As for my favorite sequel- I'm really a die hard fan of the original Halloween so I'm kind of meh about the sequels. However, Rob Zombie's reboot of Halloween absolutely blew me away. I recently acquired a Blu-ray of Kundun from a seller in China. It was the first time I found one that wasn't going for over $60. It plays fine and looks amazing so hopefully, it's legit. I don't know why that hasn't gotten at least a proper Blu-ray release, and yes, Criterion. I'm the same about Friday the 13th-the original still holds first place with me but Part 5 is excellent, as you said. I love that you started the ball rolling with this topic because it's a rabbit hole. I'm sure we could all go on forever about films for the collection. So great to meet new film friends and this is how it happens. Have an amazing day. 😀🍿👍

Wow! I love how you said that about the Rob Zombie Halloween film. It is one that I absolutely loathed when I first saw it, but now that time has passed it is slowly becoming one of my favorites. I love its edge and general creepiness that is a nice contrast to the sleek and efficient and elegant horror of the first film. You have really great tastes, and you seem to be so open to a whole different range of films and styles. Thank you, and please call me Daisuke! All my friends do. Hey my friend, just found your channel yesterday - after I finished watching The Terrorizers - and already love what you’re doing! 🌿 I’m thinking about your question. While there are tons of films that I love and hence would love to see get “the Criterion treatment”, there is this wonderful Indian film that is available on DVD and probably Blu-Ray as well, but since Indian DVD companies are generally not at all concerned about releasing the film in the best possible quality - and film producers at that time did not care enough to preserve their films - many, many films are available only in a quality that makes me sad. The film I’d love to see picked up by Criterion is “Saheb Bibi aur Ghulam” (English title would be: The Master, The Mistress and The Servant) directed by Abrar Alvi and released in 1962 or 1963. It apparently was selected for the competition section at the Berlin Film Festival at that time, but I don’t think many people know of the film. Love the film so much and I would love to rediscover the film as it should be seen. 😍 Anyway, one can dream right? 😁🇳🇱

Subscribed! Nice pics & recommendations, I need to watch a few of those! Criterion needs to re-release "Chungking Express", update "Ran", "The Killer", & "Walker" by Alex Cox on blu ray. Some cool new releases would be:"Excalibur" by John Boorman", "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "Drive" by NWR, "Only God Forgives" by NWR, "Bronson" by NWR, "Dune" by Lynch, "The Deer Hunter", "At Close Range", "In the Bedroom", "K-Pax", "Ghost Dog" & "Snatch". Also "The Prodigal Son" by Yuen Woo Ping, "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow", "The Crow" by Proyas, "Dawn of the Dead"+"Day of the Dead" by Romero & "Halloween" by Carpenter.

These are all great suggestions. I love your NIcholas Winding Refn choices especially, but all of these are great. I really agree too regarding Romero and Carpenter. By the way, I recently re-watched ONLY GOD FORGIVES (having not liked it at all when i first saw it), and I was surprised how well I responded to it a second time. It is a peculiar but still quite unforgettable film that seems much better than the critics said it was at the time.

These are all fantastic, ComicBook Ninja! I notice that you have some titles that are Criterion laserdiscs, like Lolita or Dersul Uzala. You also mention Jackie Chan whose Supercop was also a CC LD. Also 2001 was a CC LD as well.. I am of the belief that Criterion will try its best to have most of its LD catalog return to the current collection. So I hold out hope for these titles. What do you think? As for the other titles you mentioned, I remember watching the WITCHES and just being so scared and marveled by it as a kid. But you are the first person who has mentioned this film in the context of what films should be included in the Criterion Collection. And you should be applauded for this. I am really happy to read this!

Daisuke Beppu, yes I bought many of the laser discs back in the day. They were an important part in developing my film aesthetics. I never bought Supercop because the CC release was only the shorter American cut. I do believe Criterion is slowly trying to match its laserdisc catalogue with the recent releases/ anouncements of The Princess Bride and Shampoo as an example. I base my choices on the filmmakers they already have in the collection like Roeg and Kurosawa and some that have never been but should be like Kathryn Bigelow. Did you know that you could make suggestions for future titles at Criterion's website? I used to do that and many have come to the collection. Since they redesigned their website recently I'm not sure if that is still the case. You should check.

Oh my goodness! These are fabulous recommendations, ComicBook Ninja. I agree with all of them. Bullet In the Head is one of my all-time favorite films, and so is A Face In the Crowd. Empire of the Sun is such an underrated Spielberg film, too. The Long Goodbye has no definitive edition that I know of either. You have excellent taste! And more Werner Herzog should go Criterion...Thank you!

For those who are interested in The Trial (1962), there is also the UK/France/Germany Blu-ray from Studio Canal (Region B locked). And considering the relationship between Criterion and Studio Canal, it might not be easy to be released in the US, I'm afraid. (for those who don't know, Studio Canal retrieved the rights of their catalog titles from Criterion in recent years, including such major titles like The Third Man, Army of Shadows, Ran, to name a few. Now Lionsgate seems to control SC catalog in the US, but they don't care for 'old' and/or 'foreign' films.) If Criterion releases The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On (1987), I hope they make it a double feature with the director's another major achievement, Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 (1974). Yes, they should release A City of Sadness (1989), one of the two best Taiwanese gangster epics (haha), along with A Brighter Summer Day (1991). I heard the copyright issue for the film is a nightmare, but I do hope someone's restoring it. While I don't mind your choices themselves at all, some of them feel a bit redundant Blu-ray-wise, frankly. I mean, I will welcome Criterion edition of The Exotcist (1973), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) or Ciritzen Kane (1941) as much as the next guy, but the current Blu-rays are good enough for me that I'm in no dire need of new editions. No offense, of course. Oh, and just in case if you missed the news, Kino Lorber just announced the new 4K restoration of The Atomic Cafe (1982). It will be screened in select theaters in the US and after that, Blu-ray too. Here's the trailer for the re-release: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6rQc3l_pJdgqa8

This is such a fantastic comment. Thank you so much, Jiro Hong! This is the kind of comment that I truly cherish: you are so well-informed and clear, and you have your own views that differ from mine. And yet you are respectful and to the point, which I really appreciate. It is such a thrill to read your comment. Thank you so much for giving me the privilege of doing so. And let me say at the outset that I am not at all offended about your views on redundant releases on blu, regarding titles like the TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, etc. You have an excellent point. One of the great things about Criterion releases is of course the release of titles that have not yet gotten a better release or any release at all. And your comment really makes me appreciate this point more. However, I still think these "redundant" titles are still worth having in the Collection, if for anything than as a kind of sign or indication that these films are "important" or "worthy". And of course Criterion has, or is going to, release titles that have had releases in the past, like THE PRINCESS BRIDE (I am not sure how you feel about that one, but I am welcoming of it), and so I suppose it is good to expect these sorts of releases as well as the rare or novel ones. But that is still my way of totally agreeing with you and really appreciating your comment! On that point, yes, there is already a great blu ray set of CITIZEN KANE... but there is just something about the notion of having CITIZEN KANE "back" into the Criterion Collection... for one like me who is an unashamed Criterion fan, my desire to seen this film as a Criterion disc is unavoidable. But, yes, please, feel free to disagree and I am again totally cool with that. As for your updates about other titles like THE TRIAL, and ATOMIC CAFE, etc., this is great. Thank you! I am usually not on top of my blu ray news like most people, though I try to be as up to date as possible. I suppose though that, even for a film like the ATOMIC CAFE, seeing how it was once a Voyager Laserdisc, I would still love to have it be in the Criterion Collection, as a kind of another link to Criterion's laser days, but that is not to say that I dislike KINO LORBER... on the contrary, I love that label as well. And your comment about Kazuo Hara... YES!!! What an absolutely fabulous idea!!!! It never occurred to me before, but reading your comment about it makes me so excited about that! EXTREME PRIVATE EROS: LOVE SONG 1974 was also released by Facets on a DVD, which I also own. I should have mentioned that in my video but I failed to do so unfortunately... your mentioning it to me now has rekindled my interest and love for that intimate and astounding film. And I am thrilled to hear of your endorsement of my feelings about CITY OF SADNESS... I admit to not knowing too many details, but I also suspect something akin to A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY with respect to rights issues.... but it needs to be seen by as many people as possible. Jiro Hong, I would love to talk with you more, my friend. You truly are a great cinephile and one with excellent tastes in cinema. Best regards from Tokyo.

I recognise the feeling about Blu-rays already out there. But on the other hand, and apart from the Criterion extras/print quality, I guess a lot of people don't have region free players which must be really aggravating - along the same lines I know I get frustrated at releases that lack English sub-titles (especially French TV stuff or the occasional Korean movie).

Hello Daisuke. I really enjoyed this discussion. I would like to share a list of my suggestions that the mighty C might consider adopting. Catch 22, directed by Mike Nichols and an all-star cast. I own the DVD edition of this which includes a commentary between the director and Steven Soderberg, and it is fascinating. I think this film would fit Criterion like a glove. It is so surreal yet funny, witty and moving. It touches on all aspects. Two directors I am a big fan of-Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Roman Polanski, I would love to see in the big C. I can envision a box set along the lines of the Tati box or the Demi set for Jeunet's wonderful feature films- Amelie, Delicatessen, A Very Long Engagement and City of Lost Children. It would be a dream come true. Polanski, already well represented in the Collection, I would love if they could curate editions for The Tenant and The Fearless Vampire Killers. What are those movies called with different stories by different directors-anthology's? There is one I own on DVD and was made in 1965, titled Six In Paris, with short films by directors Eric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard and others. I think this would fit nicely into the collection. You have a Eureka MoC edition called Ro.Go.Pa.G, which I believe, is one of these anthology type films. If you ever have the time to give a review of that, I would appreciate your thoughts. There are two comedies I would love to see enter the collection. A New Leaf, directed by and starring Elaine May, co-starring Walter Matthau. I just love this film and talk has been of an extended ending that May nixed, which maybe Criterion could talk her into including. Wouldn't it be nice (to quote the beach boys) to have Marilyn in the collection? The Seven Year Itch by Billy Wilder has long been a favorite of mine. I love the dialogue between the two leads-Marilyn and Tom Ewell. It's really a classic....so deserving of the Criterion treatment. Finally, and this would be daring for Criterion, and when has Criterion turned down a challenge, I would propose, perhaps an Eclipse set of the films of the Kuchar brothers. They made their mark in the late 1950's and 1960's with ultra-low budget, kitchen sink, black and white (of course) mock drama's/dark comedies. Little labors of love filmed on their rooftops and bathrooms. John Waters has cited them as a terrific influence. The Film Forum, which you may know from having lived in New York, once ran a mini-retrospective of their films, that I was fortunate enough to attend. Well, Daisuke, thank you very much for letting me drift on a bit with my own suggestions for the big C. Wouldn't it be lovely if they were to read this?
@DaisukeBeppu

What a fantastic comment! I really love this. So there is so much here... First, yes, I have not forgotten Ro.Go.Pa.G. I will do more with the MoC though it may be a bit of time before I can make some videos on those. However I am planning those, and when I do I would love to show them to you and get your thoughts! I used to live very near to the Film Forum when I was in New York, so it is a very important place! I love living in Tokyo, but there are times when I miss living in New York, and having Lincoln Center, the Film Forum, Kims Video (now closed)... I saw A NEW LEAF for the first time on the MoC release, and I must say it was fantastic. Also, I agree with you about more comedies... THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH is a great candidate... And what a fantastic suggestion for a new Eclipse set!!!! The Kuchar brothers!!!!! So great!! It would certainly be a bold release should Criterion endeavor to tackle that challenge. But the films would seem to be right up the alley of Eclipse and its mission. Speaking of Eclipse, I would love to see, say a Brothers Quay box set... You may know that there were Voyager laserdiscs of the Brothers Quay films, and so there is a Criterion-linked precedent. I would love to see a set like that, and also another example of more animation in the collection. I should have mentioned that in the video...

Big fan of your videos and I’ll be watching them the upcoming weeks. I do have recommendations actually: ‘Il Conformista’ by Bernardo Bertolucci, ‘A Brighter Summer Day’ by Edward Yang (one of my favorites. Guess you’ve already seen that, looking at the video you did on al the Criterion titles from Spine 1 to 924, or something like that) and ‘Mustang’, which is a Turkish film from Deniz Gamze Ergüven and came out in 2015. Last but not least, I’d like to point out ‘Spoorloos’ or ‘The Vanishing’, as they call it in the States, which is the only Dutch film in the Criterion Collection. It’s definitely a movie to be proud of. Please let me know if you yourself have any recommendations for me. Would love to hear from you. All the best, Casper

Oh my goodness... A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY... I said it in one of my videos that it is my favorite film in the Criterion Collection. And it is. Truly a masterpiece in every sense of that word. And I am not even a great student of Taiwanese history but it achieves an even higher significance and greatness when considered through that lens. I am so happy to hear you mention that film. Edward Yang... he left this world much too soon. Incidentally, I managed to get a hold at last on his film A CONFUCIAN CONFUSION, which was released on a Japanese DVD and VHS here. You also mention IL CONFORMISTA! Well done! I too recommend that film. It is magnificent and frightening, is it not! There are moments in that film where I am actually left breathless. What an great pick you made here as well. And then the chilling, chilling SPOORLOOS or THE VANISHING. There is a key moment in that film where the main character screams out, "I am Rex Hofman!!!", and it is really, really chilling (I think you know the scene I am talking about!). My goodness. I am getting scared just thinking about this film. You bring out a great choice. But your comment now makes me realize: Is this really the only Dutch film in the current Criterion Collection? If so, that is something that really should be remedied. Do you agree? I have not seen MUSTANG, but, as I have mentioned elsewhere on this channel, I am notoriously bad with current cinema, and so as this was made in 2015 the chances are that I have not seen it. But if you recommend it, and if it is in a physical media form that I can obtain with relative ease, then I will try to get it for sure! I do have a number of recommendations, but I am not sure that I would not be able to recommend anything to you as you seem to have seen so many great films, and very likely more than me. But, perhaps could you tell me a list of some of your "favorites" (Criterion or otherwise, it is OK with me), and then I can get a better sense of what films you like and what films I might be able to recommend. How is that? It is a real pleasure for me to be able to talk to you like this! If you are on Facebook, please feel free to connect with me there as well.
@paans2624
@paans2624 6 жыл бұрын
Haha love the fact you liked my recommendations. I think you would love to see MUSTANG if you'd get the chance. To come back to SPOORLOOS/THE VANISHING, I know exactly what you mean when you talk about that "I am Rex Hofman" scene. To tell you the truth, I thought it was simple incredible, but sadly I already knew how it would end. There's a novel called 'Het Gouden Ei' (In English it would be 'The Golden Egg') on which the movie is based. It's a very popular book in high school, because students have to read several books for the subject Literature. It's mostly popular because of the fact it doesn't have that many pages. ;) Most don't know that this incredible film was based on it. Sadly SPOORLOOS/THE VANISHING is the only film that's in the Criterion Collection (If you don't count Verhoeven's Hollywood blockbuster ROBOCOP). If I'm honest, I can see why there aren't many films from the Netherlands is this magnificent collection. It's been a debate for years among Dutch film fans, whether Belgian films are better, or not. Looking at the last couple of years, I'd definitely would say our southern neighbors make better movies though. I'd highly recommend RUNDSKOP (BULLHEAD in English) by Michaël Roskam. Great crime film and fantastic actors. I'm sure you'd love it. To come back to the fact that I've probably seen more films than you, you are most definitely wrong. I'm only 22 years old, but for four years I've been a complete film buff and trying to see as many films as possible. But thanks for pointing out a film fan, when you see one. :) Good question asking me what my favorite films are. There're soooooo many. Love myself a bit of Japanese cinema (Ozu, Kurosawa (the Master), Ichikawa), European (Bergman (favorite director), Fellini, Godard, Eisenstein, Resnais or Tarkovsky) or American (Kubrick, Malick, Cassavetes or Chaplin). These people have quite a few films in the Criterion Collection. But naming all the films I love, would take me so many hours. I'll tell you a few of my favorites (by just glancing at my movie closet) as there's so many more to discover and definitely discuss. I adore PLEIN SOLEIL (PURPLE NOON in the US) by René Clement (Wonder if you've seen this?), HIGH AND LOW by Kurosawa, PSYCHO AND REAR WINDOW by Hitchcock, WINTER LIGHT by Bergman (There hasn't been one film of his yet, which I didn't like). On the other hand I like FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF and CASABLANCA (What's not to love about these two gems?), and to be honest, I could go on for ages. Love your passion for movies and that you give a reply to everyone that comments to your videos. You treat people with true kindness. The world needs more of that. Would love to keep in touch and discuss many more movies with you. All the best from Holland and keep uploading great videos! Casper

Casper, wow. Simply wow. if you don't mind, I would like to share some of your comments in a future video I may do, to highlight your comments especially regarding Dutch cinema as represented (or underrepresented) in the CC. Is that OK? this is really great. I am pleasantly surprised that you are a young guy at only 22! My goodness. You already have seen more great films at 22 than I did at that age that is for sure. I am not quite 40 yet, but I am approaching it! Anyway, thank you also for that excellent list of films! Yes, I have seen the ones you have mentioned, and i agree with you completely about how each of them is really great. I think FERRIS BUELLER is essential viewing. And I am happy to hear that you have not encountered a Bergman film you did not like. To be honest, I have yet to discuss Bergman because I feel that I am not yet intellectually equipped to talk about him. Maybe soon I will feel more confident about that, but in the meantime, I too share your admiration for Bergman films. I love Vertigo and the works of OZU, as well as A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY (have you seen it?). Also, do you know the works of Victor Erice? You probably have seen THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE and EL SUR already, but if not, I strongly recommend them because I think you will simply fall in love with them. I too can go on and on and on...!!!

Thank you for your comment.... you know, your comment has reminded me that the Criterion Collection is not as Bertolucci represented as it could be... of course, it does has LA COMMARE SECCA and THE LAST EMPEROR, and back in the day LAST TANGO IN PARIS was a CC laserdisc... but there could be so many more in the Criterion Collection, including BEFORE THE REVOLUTION, which is on a nice BFI dual format release. As for THE PASSENGER... Indicator just released a wonderful blu ray of this film. If CC could release this and then ZABRISKIE POINT, that would be something! As for AGUIRRE THE WRATH OF GOD, yes, the CC should have Herzog in the collection for sure (I know we have BURDEN OF DREAMS, but it is a shame that for instance FITZCARRALDO is not also included). This is one of the unfortunate blank spots of the collection, which I hope is remedied very soon! And, yes, if CC can release THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND, this would be such an amazing, curious release. I agree with you 100%. Thank you, Nigel!

I've always dreamed of having Boys in the Band by William Friedkin being in Criterion! It's such a thorough examination of the gay culture of the late 60s in Manhattan. It also dives into racism in the gay community with an honest look. I'd love to see that.

I agree on The Exorcist definitely. It's odd that Rosemary's Baby is in it while The Exorcist isn't. A few other horror movies that came to mind in the collection were HAUUUUSU, Eyes Without a Face, Island of Lost Souls, and The Silence of the Lambs. Thief by Michael Mann is already in the collection but I think Heat and Collateral also deserve to be in it. I'd also like to see some of Tarantino's films, especially Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs. It'd be cool to see more Scorsese Criterion versions like you mentioned, my personal favorites being Taxi Driver and The Aviator. Some recent movies that I think should maybe be considered down the road are films like The Place Beyond the Pines, Nightcrawler, You Were Never Really Here, Drive, Hell or High Water, and Wind River. The Place Beyond the Pines is possibly my favorite movie of the last decade, I don't think it got nearly the attention it deserved.

Dear Trey Tison, this is a fantastic comment. Thank you so much for sharing! There is so much here, and I agree with you so much about more Michael Mann, like Heat and Collateral. I would love to have a release of Heat that includes LA TAKEDOWN. And I am also in total agreement with you about having more Scorsese films! Now, of the recent films you mentioned, I know most of them, but I have to my embarrassment not seen any except for DRIVE (and that is because it is not always easy for me to watch recent releases because I don't have as much time as I used to to go out to the movies). But if you say they are good, then I will want to see them. In particular, I want to see YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE and NIGHTCRAWLER. and if you say that about THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, then I must definitely seek it out!!! Thank you my friend!! I don't disagree at all with any of your picks, Daisuke. All important films in need of premium home video treatment. Loved that you recommended Texas Chainsaw (one of my personal favorites). My picks for what should enter the collection are mainly films by cinema's finest directors who either need to be represented or demand more representation. This includes the aforementioned Friedkin, Claire Denis, Billy Wilder, Werner Herzog, Hirokazu Kore-eda, list goes on and on. - Dan (from the CriterionNow group)
@DaisukeBeppu
@DaisukeBeppu 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, Dan! Thank you for your comment here! I love your list of filmmakers... Claire Denis, well yes there is only WHITE MATERIAL in the CC right now, right? So, I would say that I totally agree with you... And then Wilder... here I think the MoC has an edge over the CC in that the MoC has more Wilder films... but the CC did have films like Some Like It Hot on laserdisc, and I think there are rumors swirling around that this film might indeed return to the CC sooner than we might think... As for Herzog... there are no direct films that have been directed by him in the collection, right... so that is a shame. And Kore-eda... we need more Kore-eda in the collection... I recall that another comment mentioned AFTER LIFE, which is a wonderful film that has a quirky premise that is dealt with in such a charming and sincere manner. That would be such a great addition.

This is great! And yes I agree.... It is significant in that it did seem to reignite the trend of the sexy thriller in 90s Hollywood, but that pushed the envelope in terms of sex and violence and what could be shown in an R-rated Hollywood film I think. Good point about Facets. As far as I know (and I admit to not being in any way an insider), there is no direct relationship between what has been licensed to Facets for distribution on DVD, and what has been licensed to Criterion. (In other words, I don't think it is necessarily the case that all IP that was licensed to Facets will therefore automatically get licensed to Criterion.) So, I think the issue with the Dekalog was perhaps a matter of the license term ending for Facets, and then the rights were licensed to a new licensee party (in this case, Criterion). This often happens with licensing when licensing terms expire or licenses are terminated , etc. That being said, I think it would be great to see the Kazuo Hara films released by Criterion. And a 2 disc box set would be great... but let's not stop at a 2 disc set, what about a 4 disc set (including Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 and A Dedicated Life)! That would be a great thing! Tie Xi Qu looks really good, but the DVD seems extremely difficult to find unfortunately. There is a copy on eBay for $60, think that is worth it? I am not sure what the initial retail price was. Absolutely agree on The Devils. Hopefully they could find the missing footage that has eluded us forever. Criterion to me, has always been strongest with films that are important, yet not well represented on home video. Obviously I am not disparaging their releases of "popular" films, but they shine through strongest when they unearth treasures that have been forgotten to history. I love discovering films that I normally would not consider. Off the top of my head, a film I want Criterion to do would be The Plague Dogs. Since Criterion already released Watership Down, this is the same director adapting a story by the same author. The only decent release of it is the uncut version on DVD in the UK, but it looks and sounds awful. However, Shout Factory is currently working with the director Martin Rosen on a Blu-ray of it, high chances it is the uncut version too!

Oh man, what a question. First of all, you are really so articulate about the value of Criterion and its ability to release films that have not yet been released, versus releasing films that have already had healthy release histories. Another viewer Jiro Hong made the same great point... While I personally love to see films that have already been released elsewhere also be part of the CC (take the PRINCESS BRIDE for example), I also totally am behind what you say. But you say it better than I ever could. And your suggestion about the PLAGUE DOGS! This is a fantastic suggestion! And I did not know about this film and Shout Factory!!! I am always learning from you, and today is no exception to that! Now, as for Tie Xi Qu, I didn't realize that it is now only available via sites like eBay. that is a shame. I have not heard any rumors about it coming to the CC, but I don't want to suggest that you buy it for $60 on eBay and then have the CC announce that it is going to release the film. At the same time, the film is absolutely incredible and, despite its length, it has a remarkable re-watchability quality, and so owning a copy of it is really a good idea... but would I pay $60 for it? Is it possible say to get a cheaper used copy of it? $60 is a lot of money. However, if you were to buy it, you will be getting a film that is worth every penny and then some. So, it is ultimately up to you and your budget... Sorry for being a bit wishywashy with my answer.

I also appreciate your comments, Zyrother. I put together a Letterboxd list of the best documentaries I have seen so far: boxd.it/1TGjk It is hard to rank them properly, but you will get the idea. All are worth seeing. I saw many of them at film festivals. I hope it helps you.

Zyrother what a great idea about documentaries. Let me see what I can come up with. Thank you for the suggestion! By the way, what docs would you say? At the top of my head, the one I must say is SHOAH. This is a very important one, perhaps together with NIGHT AND FOG the most important film in the CC. I have hesitated to mention it in the context of a KZbin video thus far because I feel these should be afforded special respect and that I am still trying to clarify my own thoughts on the film in my own mind and heart. But I suppose what I can say now is that, as a piece of film, It is such a key film and one that anyone who calls himself or herself a CC fan must watch. I would go so far to say that it is required viewing. Other docs I love are for example Errol Morris films like THIN BLUE LINE or FOG OF WAR, Kazuo Hara films, the Up films, the Beatles Anthology... it is also not a doc per se, but there is the great, insightful and poignant interview that Melvyn Bragg did of Dennis Potter just before Potter died of cancer.

I have some Criterion titles and they are very well presented, but there are other boutique companies I think do a better job, Arrow video, second sight films, and my personal favourite Eureka masters of cinema. People say psychical media is slowing down but I think its very exciting with companies like Criterion and other boutique labels that find markets with films from all genres and tastes.

Hello Gloomy Vale, and thank you so much for your great comment. It is really excellent. And totally, I get it. I think also that overall, yes, the physical media market seems to be very strong, at least from my vantage point. I am not sure how long it will last, but overall, the accessibility and availability are outstanding.

I'm a longtime fan of Lynch (I saw Blue Velvet at 6 or 7 on VHS). I went to see Mulholland Drive twice when it came out. I walked out of Inland Empire. Lynch is my favourite filmmaker but I hate Inland Empire. I have re-watched it since and I stand by my decision to walk out. It was also a really uncomfortable theater. You have to be physically comfortable to endure Inland Empire.
@DaisukeBeppu

Thank you so much for this. And I appreciate this very much, because, as you say, you are a big fan of Lynch, and yet you have the reaction to Inland Empire that you say you did. I respect this very much. In many ways, it has links to Lynch's overall body of work, but at the same time there are a number of unique aspects that might not necessarily resonate with everyone. That is totally fair.

One thing I’ll love to see in the criterion collection are more Mexican films. There are many (especially from its golden age) that are great which unfortunately are unknown to most film lovers, cinephiles etc. I think it’s due to lack of proper restoration, distribution, and translation. Some of them are in need of a proper restoration and presentation such as in a blu ray, but unfortunately there is not. The only reason why the films have not disappeared and I’ve come to be exposed to them and enjoy enjoy is thanks to KZbin (some of them with good quality also). But hopefully maybe one day criterion would consider these films and started to restore them and add them to the collection; so that others may come to know this cinema which most of the time gets overlooked. PS: if there is one Mexican film I’ll love to see in the collection is Macario (1960) which is considered to be the greatest Mexican film of all time and was the first Mexican film to earn a Oscar nomination for best foreign film. If that happens I’ll be extremely happy.

@@DaisukeBeppu ¡de nada! If interested I’ll leave you some links below of some of my favorite Mexican films that I’ve found on KZbin with English subtitles I’ll hope you’ll enjoy them to. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6LSqpSaiKugrNk This is Los Olvidados by Luis Buñuel which is often regarded as one of Mexico’s greatest films of all time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mam4aHeaprlol7M this El Esqueleto de la Señora Morales (1960) (The Skeleton of Mrs Morales) by Rogelio A. González it is a black comedy/horror film which is considered one of Mexico’s best horror films. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3Ouk5-GZbOCf9U This Ánimas Trujano (1961) (also known in English as The Important Man) by Ismael Rodríguez. This film stars Toshiro Mifune in one of his unknown/underrated films (he did a great job btw despite the language barrier) this film has often been listed in various critics lists of the 100 best Mexican films. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4rXZ2erfKhshs0 Finally Macario(1960) by Roberto Gavaldón. This was the first Mexican film nominated for the Oscar for best foreign film but lost to The Virgin Spring by Ingmar Bergman; similar to some of Bergman’s works, this film shares similar themes to The Seventh Seal. This film is regularly considered as the greatest Mexican film ever made. This is one of many Mexican films I’ll love to see in The Criterion Collection hopefully it come true one day. PS: if you are able to view them and if you wish and if you have the time, I’ll like for you to share your thoughts on them by way of your KZbin channel. Thanks.

Gummo should get the criterion treatmen... also a Zulawski Box-Set with Third Part, Diabel and On The Silver Globe would be the most epic release... Jacques Rivette is also short in the collection... The Hourglass Sanatorium by Wojciech Jerzy Has, also a good one in my opinion... there is a movie called Hunting Season in Bavaria, one of Haneke's favoriete films, would make a great obscure gem in the criterion collection, I believe it deserves more attention... Far better than most of the german new wave stuff is Roland Klick's action-cinema, who would make an interesting contrast to Wenders and Fassbinder more intellectual approach to filmmaking

I just thought of another title that would be great and would fit in the collection is the 1996 Richard Linklater film sUburBia. He is obviously a director they adore and this title has never been available above vhs at least here in America.
