This is Daisuke's friendly and eloquent way of taking over 50 minutes to basically say: "Look guys, I want them all and dig this, I have them all!" :D Thank you so much for this, I just finished watching the whole video and enjoyed it immensely. Also interesting choice of words, when you say "I am complete now" instead of "my collection is complete now". That kind of sums up the way a collector feels. When there is something missing, damaged, etc. it really eats away at your soul...

Thank you again Daisuke for yet another fascinating video. Even though I’ve tried to replace most of my film collection from DVDS to Blu Rays, the DVDs of Man Who Fell To Earth and Short Cuts are well worth hanging on to. Beautiful editions. A bit of background to my collection. It’s nowhere near the level of yours, I have something like 60 Blu Rays and 40 DVD’s in the Criterion Collection. But I thought I’d share what brought them to my attention. It was probably 15 years ago and I loved Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. I was searching around for a copy of the film and then I came across that spectacular triple disc version in the lovely plastic slip box. I thought this was an incredible release at the time and so comprehensive in detail plus an excellent transfer. I was so impressed that I went on to look to see what other films Criterion had released and I was hooked.

Hello my friend. I hope you are well. Oh, that superb super box DVD set of BRAZIL!! Yes! If i recall correctly, this covers the materials that originally appeared on the special edition Criterion Collection laserdisc. In fact, the subsequent blu ray release of BRAZI has slightly different supplementary materials and so, if you are a BRAZIL completionist, and if you ever get the BRAZIL blu ray, I would recommend that you still KEEP that beautiful DVD set. It is spectacular!

It’s really cool to hear how you got into the Criterion Collection and why you collect the films in their collection. I got into it when I got It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, and I realized just how many great titles were in the collection, so I began to get films I didn’t own but had seen as well as buy Blu-Rays of films that I may have owned on DVD, but hadn’t yet bought it on Blu-Ray. Wow, your collection is FANTASTIC! You, sir, I feel, fall into the "completist" group of collecting. Needing to have every movie, in every design- and format-iteration. Whilst that's impressive, I would never fall into that category, mostly because of funds available, but I believe the more important reason would be that the packaging and all that other "extraneous" stuff interests me much less than the film and getting the best possible picture and sound quality available. Steel-books and digipacks and all that don't interest me at all. So whereas most movies released on Criterion are definitive, that doesn't go for all of them. I've read that the new Kino Lorber release of Last Year at Marienbad is better than CC; that's the one on my wishlist. So, I am a completist in wanting every movie, but it doesn't have to be Criterion. I feel lucky in living now when so much is available in such high quality, and pleased that things are being released and re-relased on Bluray and above all 4k bluray, which I feel certain will be where I get off the train; my eyes aren't getting any younger! Still, I LOVE your videos and your views are fascinating for a fellow collector, even if of much more modest means and proportions than yourself. Thank you for your videos.

Hello BirdArvid, and thank you so much for your brilliant comment. I should say immediately that I really appreciate your taking the time to share your great and insightful perspective on this area of "collecting". I respect your approach to this very much, because as you say, it is about the film itself. And as a secondary but still important aspect of this, yes, costs can tend to be high for Criterions compared to other labels, and so you bring up really excellent points. And I respect it very much. Hey Daisuke, it's great to hear about your history again and about your collecting philosophy! Hopefully our hobby survives in the future, it would be very sad if someday Criterion stopped releasing physical media and started to only focus on Filmstruck. My film collecting philosophy is just that I buy films that I like or really want to see, but recently I've thought I'd put my focus more on certain labels like Criterion and Arrow etc. I personally hate digipacks, I think they look awful next to the standard plastic cases, but I get why people like them. In the UK the digipacks are more expensive than the plastic ones, plastic ones are £17.99 and digipacks are £25.99. Lastly, I'm not into cars either haha I don't even have a driving license.
@DaisukeBeppu6 жыл бұрын
Hello again! So, I have gone back and forth with respect to digipacks. I used to like them, and then I disliked them, and now I find myself liking them very much now. So I can sympathize with both viewpoints. However, there is so much more potential regarding cover art presentation and booklet contents with a digipack release, and so I think it is worth getting the digipack version if possible. Now, I totally get the issue regarding how the films look when arranged on shelves, but for example, I know that some people arrange their titles by digipack titles, non-digipack titles, etc. So, this could be an option for you as well if that is within the realm of consideration.

I was big into film for a long time (in fact, I was a media major as an undergrad in college years ago) , but with a career path change and other life changes, I had sseemingly lost my interest in the arts. That has changed very recently, when I read that Filmstruck was shutting down. I admit, I hadn't heard of the service, but felt very sad when I found out what the service is and felt: I should have subscribed to it from day one. And thus, I knew, my passion is back in full force. I used to have some Criterion DVDs years ago which I sold, and regret that now. Your video has helped me refocus. Also, you have great passion, presentation, and knowledge. You have earned a new subscriber. Thank you for helping bring back a joyful element to my life.

Dear Sean, thank you so much for your great comment. I was very moved upon reading it, and so thank you so much for sharing your experience with me and the rest of us. I think that you are not the only person to shift gears so to speak and focus on other aspects of your life in a way that might take you away from cinema. I too had moments like that in my life when I needed to focus on other parts of my life. But, it is very nice to come back to cinema and learn from it and continue to be inspired by it. Of course, one's love of cinema need not necessarily be Criterion-based, but I think Criterion acts as a kind of overall "curator" and so it helps someone like me when I need help on my own cinema-watching journey. As for FilmStruck, yes, this news made me very sad as well, even though I am not a FilmStruck user. And it is a blow to all of us who love classic cinema and the like. Thank you so much for your really kind comments. I am really very honored to receive such a kind comment. One day, if you don't mind, I would love to hear about what other films that you like and any other recommendations you may have. @@DaisukeBeppu Thank you so much for your beautiful response, Daisuke. Coming back to cinema, full force, is such an amazing feeling, isn't it? To perceive some films differently as time goes on and as our lives changes is a very fulfilling experience. Two of my favorite films of all time (which I'd LOVE to see as Criterion releases one day) are Baraka and Samsara. They are both visual, wordless masterpieces. I had the honor of seeing Samsara in a now demolished art house theatre in New York City. It was a life changing experience. Another film that I was only able to watch once but had left me feeling a feeling which I simply have never felt before or since and can't describe with words was Akira Kurosawa's Dreams. That film really did something with my emotions. My emotions were a combination of hope, extreme sadness, and honestly just freaked out. As much as I loved the film, I cannot bring myself to watch it again out of fear. Fear of how it will mess with my emotions again. However, I know that even though it's been about 5 years since I have watched it, I am sure I will muster up the courage to watch it again...someday. It's a pleasure hearing from you and I have been binge watching your videos the past couple days. I am gaining knowledge and at peace simeoutainsly as I watch your videos. Thank you for that. I really appreciate this video. It is always interesting to hear what makes other collectors tick. I love the nuances that are involved in collecting. I have been collecting films and television shows for about 20 years now. I have certainly made some mistakes along the way, in terms of getting rid of titles that I should not have. My big blunder there came when I sold off my Walt Disney Treasures Collection, which I am now re-collecting, and paying for dearly. I have 19 of 30 sets and hope to complete the collection sometime in the next year or two. My collection started in the VHS days. I had a local buy/sell/rent/trade shop that offered used VHS movies for $4.99. My brother and I would regularly visit and drop whatever allowance we had saved up. I would also buy blank VHS tapes and record movies and television shows directly off of TV. I remember my family being upset because I would be taping a Friday the 13th marathon, and they couldn't use the TV for what they wanted to watch. I would tape entire Twilight Zone (my favorite TV show of all time) marathons. I had the episode guide printed out in a nice folder, and I would highlight each episode as I recorded them, and then on the tape, I would add labels with the episode name, and add the start time on the tape for that episode. I was also really big into waking up early in the morning and taping old Disney films (see my blog post about that here... cartoonfortress.wordpress.com/2018/07/13/opening-the-vault/ ). I believe my VHS collection topped out at 7-800 tapes. I was a teenager and had converted my parents storage room in the basement to a makeshift room that housed my movie collection. Over time, I moved on to DVD (I still remember my first DVD being the animated "Speed Racer" series which was also my introduction to Anime back in the day) and then to Blu Ray, and now even some 4K titles. I currently stand in a position where I will buy the Target or Best Buy exclusives for films that I want in my collection. And then, depending on whether they are a really unique piece or not, I will use the digital code sheet, and then sell the actual movie in the case on eBay. Most times I will come out even, and in some cases even make a bit of money, because they exclusives have such a limited run. Other items in my collection have to be really unique, such as the aforementioned Walt Disney Treasures Collection. I also have things like the Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection box set (one of my favorites), the Complete Works of Hayao Miyazaki, a few steelbooks, and digibooks, and THEN there is my Criterion Collection. I love purchasing Criterion films!!! They are unique, HIGHLY collectible, and the supplements are always amazing. I love looking at my collection on the shelf. That is where most of my collecting money is going these days. I make quite a bit of blind purchases, and have seldom if ever been disappointed. I also buy Arrow Video titles from time to time. The only other thing that I collect in my life is books. I have some collector editions of film and animation books, some really great Disney history, and a bunch of Leonard Maltin stuff (he is my favorite film historian/critic). I apologize for rambling on. I could go even more in depth. I love talking about film collecting more than anything! Thank you for the video! Cheers!

Dear David, thank you so much. There is so much to unpack here, and I really love this wonderful comment. If I could pick out a few highlights for me, it would that I too love THE TWILIGHT ZONE. I remember when I used to live in the United States when I was younger, the marathons would run on TV during the July 4 season. I would record as many as I could off the TV too! Amazing! do you have any favorite episodes? I have the blu ray set of that which I got recently. Also, while I don't collect the Walt Disney Treasures Collection, I know the series you refer to. I hope and wish you complete your collection as soon as possible. Incidentally, I have the Hitchcock blu ray box set (which also has NORTH BY NORTHWEST), but I have not yet gotten a Miyazaki box set. The box set is getting a bit hard to come by here in Japan and even if I find one for sale, it is way too expensive. But, I will try to get the box set soon. And so I am very happily jealous of your collection, my friend! Finally, I too am a huge fan of Leonard Maltin. I use to pour through his movie guides when I was a little kid, and that was so fun. But I think I admire him most for a supplement he did where he was giving an appreciation of the Hitchcock film TOPAZ (which is not an easy film to appreciate, though I think it is better than most people give it credit for), and I really loved his earnest take on the film. Thank you so much for your great and inspiring message.

Hi Daisuke. Thank you for the kind reply. I do have a favorite episode. "Walking Distance" is the most profound episode of television I have ever watched in my life. It provides such an emotional commentary on the loss of innocence, and leaving childhood behind. It was just the 5th episode of the show, premiering on October 30, 1959. frank Overton and Gig Young give absolutely amazing performances as father and son. The talk they have in the park at the end of the episode leaves me in tears every single time. Rod Serling wrote that particular episode (as he did many others). One of the reasons I appreciate the show, is for the range it displays. There are life-affirming episodes, and then others really make you question the world around you, while others are straight horror. There are even some that are quite funny. It is everything to me in the world of television and writing. The Walt Disney Treasures Collection is such a wonderful representation of what the archives at Disney have to give. Of course, being very selfish, I wan them to continue to release new sets, knowing how much they have available to them. I would love to see even more Mickey Mouse Club content, as well as other obscure titles like "Mystery in Dracula's Castle" (starring Johnny Whitaker) and "Moochie of the Little League/Moochie of Pop Warner Football" (starring the wonderful Kevin Corcoran), and other Disneyland TV specials like "Disneyland Showtime" which features a very young Kurt Russell and Osmond family. There is almost nothing that I love more in this world than studying Disney history. That Hitchcock set is such a gem in my collection. I remember you saying that "North By Northwest" is your favorite film. It is so much fun! I love Cary Grant's performance, and of course the scene on Mount Rushmore. My favorite Hitchcock film is "Psycho". I still remember the first time I watched this film. It blew me away. It is one of the reasons I love movies. I recall the first time I wanted to watch it. My dad and I were at Blockbuster (back in the video store days) and I wanted to rent it. He wouldn't allow it, because it carried an R rating. So I took it upon my young self to personally contact both the MPAA and Universal Studios to have them change the rating on the film. Haha! That is how badly I wanted to watch it. Needless to say, my efforts fell short, and I would have to wait a couple more years to see it. But, the good news is we ended up renting "Rear Window" which is my second favorite Hitchcock film, and carries a wonderful performance by none other than James Stewart. I have not seen Topaz yet, but I do own it (as it is a part of the Masterpiece Collection), so I will make it a point to watch that soon. I have interacted with Leonard and his daughter Jessie on social media. He actually said that he would sign my Disney Treasures Collection for me, which is kind of funny, because all of the sets do technically already have his signature on them, albeit a regenerated computer image of his signature. I really appreciate the work that he put into those sets. His research is exhaustive in all that he does. I just read his new book "Hooked on Hollywood" which is a great read that focuses on early Hollywood, and features interviews with many of the big names back then. There were, admittedly, a lot of names I did not know. So I was happy to learn...a lot of new information. I hope you and your family are having a wonderful weekend! I'm off on a flight tomorrow for work, but I'll keep up on videos your putting out, and do my best to add to the conversation. :)

Another great video, Daisuke! Thank you for sharing. Here are a few more questions for you (one related to the video, two not directly related): 1) While I definitely agree with you that Criterion is the cream of the crop in terms of home video labels, I was wondering if there are perhaps any aspects of Criterion that you find to be lacking or that annoy you? For example, the changing logos (some people prefer one over the others); or recently, some people have complained about some video transfers which lean towards teal or green. Also, the booklet vs. fold-out leaflet debate. Etc etc.. 2) Do you collect any or all of the BFI Flipside series (mostly dual-format releases)? They have recently piqued my interest. 3) Did you ever think about getting into filmmaking yourself or making short films (I guess your videos are kind of filmmaking in a way!)?
@DaisukeBeppu6 жыл бұрын
Dear Tim, wow, what great questions, my friend. I hope you are well by the way. As for your questions: 1. You read my mind! In fact, I have been planning to make a video about things that I find a bit, how shall I say, are perhaps areas where Criterion could see some improvement. It is a bit of a sensitive topic as there are many die-hard fans of the Criterion Collection and I must be sure that my comments are not inappropriately made, but one day, I hope to make a video. I suppose, however, that if I were to say something now, it would be that, in fact, I do not at all mind with respect to potential picture quality issues (i.e. the "teal" issue), and I think the Criterion releases that are "affected" are not at all problematic to me. However, I would love to see more films from cinematic movements and regions that have hitherto not been as well represented (such as Korean cinema, etc.). 2. As for BFI Flipside, I know of these!! But alas I have not yet dipped my toe into the Flipside waters. But the catalog looks very interesting to me with many films that I have no direct experience with. I am always afraid to get into new aspects of collecting because it will mean more money for me to spend, and so for now I am resisting the urge to get into the Flipside titles. But if you think they are worth recommending, then I might give them a second glance. What say you? 3. Oh, thank you! Another viewer asked me a similar question. In fact, there was a period of time when I was younger when I did make short animation videos with a simple camcorder. And when I was in college I dabbled in video and film making with short films that alas I do not have copies of anymore. I also dabble in creative writing, but my writing ability is extremely poor and the stories I ended up creating were very derivative and ultimately artistic failures. So, now I write very casually and with no intent to seek to try to publish.

I honestly heard of Criterion through "The Life Aquatic..." in name only but it wasn't until Godzilla 2014 and learning about kaiju that I stumbled upon "Daimajin". The blu ray release had "Rashomon" on the back and I got curious and blind bought that film and instantly made me a fan on Criterion Collection. So, my criteria is, essentially, blind buying films from Criterion and it's been converting me into a fan of their product for the past 5 years. As of right now, I have over 80 films from Criterion and only want it to grow out of love for being able to "discover" love of film.

Really surprised Criterion doesn't ship to Japan. On a lark, I checked Tower Records in Tokyo. And a copy of Monterey Pop was like 10400y, and converting that came out to $118.00CDN pretty well. YIKES! So pretty impressive how you got your collection, and still have a family and a house you can afford! LOL
@DaisukeBeppu6 жыл бұрын
Oh yes... So the Criterion Collection online store does not ship to Japan last time I checked. And so that means I never get involved in the Criterion flash sales that occur from time to time. Also I am unable to purchase Criterion goods that are (to my knowledge) only available at the Criterion store (like mugs or the like). But that is OK with me because I don't necessarily need such items. And as for purchasing Criterions in Japan, it really depends, but yes, it is very possible to find a store or seller in Japan that sells a new Criterion blu ray for an extravagant price. And usually there is no ill will meant at such seller, but, rather, this is a reflection of the relative "rarity" of the item in the Japanese market (i.e. most consumers will be looking for an item that can support Japanese language), and also any import duties that have been imposed, etc.

Very fascinating video! I remember getting started on Criterion years ago but I haven't truly gotten into collecting them until recently. I don't care so much about what format I have them on. I'm just happy I own it period since collecting can be challenging sometimes. I would have had more but alas I was into collecting video games for a time (hence my profile picture) and managed to collect over 1,500 of them. But I want to go more into the world of Criterion these days since there is a certain fun to collecting these movies and experience something I normally wouldn't experience with normal movies. I'd like to thank you for getting me interested in Criterion Daisuke! (By the way, I like the 2nd label the most from Criterion) Two quick questions though: 1. What are your thoughts on print numbers? On the back of each Criterion there is a section that shows "First printing, year" and "Second printing , year". I have a few with the second print run compared to the many in the first print run but I was wondering if there was something beyond the second print run for certain releases? It doesn't really matter so much but I was curious. 2. I've been trying to get the OOP titles and have gotten a decent chunk of them but there are a couple of them I own that slightly concern me (Nights of Cabiria and Alphaville more specifically) in terms of the fear of bootlegs. I've looked at images online of the discs themselves but there aren't too many resources available. Do you happen to know any sites out there that might specialize in that besides Criterion Forum? Thank you.
@DaisukeBeppu6 жыл бұрын
Hello! thank you so much for your great comment! 1. So, generally speaking, my own personal approach is that I'll usually gravitate towards the first printing where possible, though I have no logical reason to do so other than it's the first printing. But there is nothing at all wrong with second printings. (For example, I had the second printing of the BEASTIE BOYS ANTHOLOGY, but I wanted to get the first printing because of the logo was the "black line" logo.) 2. As for fakes, yes, this is a real issue. I would recommend to you to go to the Criterion Forum or reddit or other places like that and ask specific questions there. One thing to look for is the relevant ID number information that will be engraved or embossed on the inner rings of the discs themselves, and so if you buy from an eBay seller, you should always ask to have the seller send pictures of the disc itself (front and back) that will show any serial numbers. Also, where possible, the reliability of the seller is also very important where possible. If you can buy from a good and reliable seller, this is also a positive. Also of course, it is better to get sealed copies if possible, but be careful as even seals can sometimes be faked. And so it is a good idea to ask for as many pictures as possible from the seller. Finally, be sure that any purchases you make are protected (i.e. purchases on Amazon or through eBay) so that you can make claims asserting forgeries or bootlegs if you need to. I urge you though to ALWAYS BE CAREFUL when buying on eBay or the like, as sometimes even good faith sellers don't know that they have fakes. Always ask for pictures of the covers and of the discs to verify ID numbers and other information. (If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to me. You can find me on Facebook under my name and send me a PM if you like.)

Your approach to the Criterion collection is like my approach to the Godzilla Franchise. I don't have infinite time and opportunity to watch everything. I try to pick my battles and get the most bang for my buck in the most effective way possible. I have pretty much given up all other film franchises these days...the Godzilla series spans nearly 70 years and has films representing 8 different decades of cinema. They represent Japanese Cinema, international cinema, world cinema, American cinema, vintage, modern, prestige, low budget, and all in between. So while I do own and collect other films...over time I have less and less value on picking and chipping away with other franchises. So I commit to being all-in on Godzilla and appreciating it all, above any other franchise or property. No other franchise offers the scope and variety that Godzilla does.

Your thoughts and methods are so fascinating to hear! It was around the time Pierrot Le Fou, Last Year At Marienbad, Leon Morin Priest, Le Doulos, Army of Shadows, and maybe some more but that's all I can think of off the top of my head right now. But, when those titles were announced as going to be out of print is when I first really got into Criterion and had started buying titles. Unfortunately, at that time I didn't quite understand what that meant, so I didn't rush to get any of them, as well as I just wasn't familiar with them at all. Except I did know of and had seen Pierrot Le Fou, which is probably the OOP title I would like to have the most, even though I have a studiocanal release of it. Although I don't get DVD releases if there is already a blu-ray release, I am the same way when it comes to digipacks. I would love to have as many of the digipack releases as possible. So, if there are titles still available as dual-format digipack releases I'm more likely to get it compared to a clear case blu-ray title, especially since they are no longer producing the dual-format editions and some of those titles have already been changed to the regular clear cases. I did NOT know The Man Who Fell to Earth DVD came with the book! I wonder why they didn't produce the blu-ray editions like that! And Short Cuts! Learning this here makes me think watching your Entire Complete Criterion Collection videos I will also learn more about specificities of titles/releases. I have not yet watched those, but *of course* plan to! ...And might just watch a couple now because once I start watching or listening to something pertaining to Criterion, I just want to continue! :)
@DaisukeBeppu6 жыл бұрын
Dear Bailee, hello, my friend! How are you? So, yes, those titles were announced way back in the day. By the way, I personally think that the Studio Canal blu ray releases of these films (like Pierrot Le Fou, Ran, etc.) are not bad at all, and so since you have the Studio Canal release of Pierrot Le Fou, I think this is fine. Also, I am so happy to hear your comments about the DVD digipack releases. And, yes, I highly recommend that you get a hold of the releases that come with a book: so the ones that come to mind off the top of my head are PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, MR ARKADIN (DVD), SHORT CUTS (DVD), MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH (DVD), VAMPYR, TWO LANE BLACKTOP (DVD), etc. Also EL SUR comes with the novella (though it is not in the form of a printed out book but rather a booklet).
@BaileeWalsh6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't mind Studiocanal releases. I do have a preference for Criterion, especially because I'd rather have Region A releases, which Studiocanal does not always include. We have a region free player connected to one of the main televisions, I just usually watch stuff in my room since my brother uses that television most of the time. These are kind of nit-picky things, though. And I have to mention that I don't understand the situations entirely, but I have noticed one reason why Criterion fans may speak badly or have a negative opinion on Studiocanal is because of the way things are handled, the exchanging of rights for the labels to release films. Usually when certain titles are going OOP on Criterion I've found it's because Studiocanal took the right away/back. Again, I don't know the full situation about that kind of stuff, just an observation, I guess. Pierrot Le Fou is the only Godard film that I have that isn't a Criterion release. It'd just be nice to have all of them be Criterion. And I have it in a weird spot on my shelf so sometimes I overlook it. I have the Picnic At Hanging Rock dual-format release, which is such a beautiful release!! I completely love the aesthetics of it and the film. I also have the dual-format release of Red River, which includes the book and is one you didn't mention. That I have yet to read and watch, however. And the third book I have is Vampyr, but I don't have the upgraded blu-ray release; I have the DVD. I'm glad it turned out that the upgrade is the same. I would have been disappointed if it didn't include the book anymore. And I also love the design of it, too. The cover was one that intrigued me very much when I first got into Criterion.
@DaisukeBeppu6 жыл бұрын
Oh yes! Thank you! I forgot to mention RED RIVER, didn't I. That is a good one. I admit that while I like that film, I don't find myself entirely getting wholly into the film as much as other people can. But I think it is a fine film and for a fan of Westerns a must-see for sure. Maybe one day when you watch the film, you can tell me what you thought of it. Thank you so much! I love your comments because you always catch my mistakes and oversights! By the way, I agree with you on PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK. This is one of my favorite Criterion films ever. I can't explain it well, but I think of it like a film that is so beautiful in how it frustrates me.
@BaileeWalsh6 жыл бұрын
I think the more times I watch Picnic at Hanging Rock the more complex it gets. Upon first viewing, especially if not familiar with the book/story, I think audiences tend to focus on the mystery of it. But as I've continued to watch it every once in a while, I've started to focus on the characters and their interactions more and try to get inside their heads, putting myself in each person's perspective. I particularly think of the scene when Irma returns to the school and the other girls attack her. I think that is one of the most fascinating scenes in the film.

Definitely when I learned of OOP, I got obsessed over Criterion. My first Criterion purchase was the Brazil box set 18yrs ago. I was so impressed with the packaging and depth all the extras went into. Then I got obsessed with Terry Gilliam, and vowed to get all his Criterion releases, and that would be it. Being a Kubrick fan, I should also get Spartacus as well. And It was a station here in Ontario called TVO that showed classics like Wages Of Fear and M. Hulots Holiday. And that really opened my mind to great film and the respect for Criterions selections. So I'm not as extensive as you are. But the hunt for OOP is fun and educating. And dare I say, not all the OOP titles I enjoy and regret spending the money on. But now I'm fascinated with getting the releases with books now as well. So I really appreciate your reviews and showing the diversity of certain releases.
@DaisukeBeppu6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! Yes, I too think that the "OOP hunt" can sometimes be daunting, and for some titles, and for some people, the ebay prices might not necessarily justify getting the film. But I think this point is a personal choice that we all can decide based on our own personal preferences and the like. There is nothing after all that says that one must have every single title ever. And films, as you also know so well, are so personal--or at least, have the potential of being so personal--that we often must be sure we know what it is we want when we make choices regarding our collection. This is the fun part about collecting I think. But I should also say that, regarding the Criterion OOP titles, many of them are really worth it, though it is still possible to watch them in non-Criterion release versions! You always have such insightful commentary, my friend. It is a real pleasure. One of the great things about doing KZbin is having the chance of meeting great people like you. It has been so great, and I feel like we have known each other for a long time, even though I think it has been only a matter of a month or so. Amazing. Best regards.
@DungeonStudio6 жыл бұрын
True, even for the OOP movies I'm not too keen on, I'm glad to have them. As like you pointed out elsewhere about some movies you weren't keen on at first, but watching them again later gave you a new appreciation. The Luis Bunnel films are starting to grow on me. And was going to ask, do you get obsessed over a rare movie that you might not even like, but it's rarity or limited edition compels you to have it. I got like this over Abel Ferrarra and his early horror films. I love his later work like Bad Lieutenant, but not keen on his earlier stuff. Same with David Cronenberg. I'm not too keen on The Brood and his other early gore films. But with Criterion issuing The Brood now, I feel like I should have it. But then with John Waters, I just love all his work. Be it Criterion or other release. So maybe it's 'getting the director'? I get that Waters just wanted to have fun with his movies and shock audiences. And he retains that ethos today. Whereas Cronenberg and Ferrarra I don't get what drives them sometimes? And as brilliant as they are, they sometimes can't answer that themselves. Do you feel that way with movie makers sometimes?

Oh man, cracked LaserDiscs are my greatest fear, and why I usually never order them online. I had spent $80 on the LaserDisc of The Keep off LDDB, and the seller mailed it in a terrible Media Mailer package, which is normally used for vinyl. I received the disc and inspected it, and it appeared to be fine. I put it in the player and started it, and the player spun the disc for a few seconds and stopped. Took the disc out and a crack had appeared from the inner ring, almost to the edge of the disc. I theorized that the disc was cracked underneath the label, so I never saw it. And the force of the disc spinning in the player put so much stress on it that the crack grew. Amazingly, the seller had a second copy, and sent me that one, with insurance. But it arrived with a large crack on it as well. The Postal Service destroyed both. Tried filling out a claim, but the Postal Service simply ignored me and the seller. Needless to say, I only orders discs online if the seller can pack them very well. But it costs an arm and a leg to do so. Thanks for the insight into your Criterion madness! :D

Oh, yes, the issues regarding laserdiscs and the mail. I suppose that I was lucky in that, of all the discs in my collection, I have had only 2 major damage incidents, and so that is a bit low compared to others. So I suppose I should count myself lucky. Also the ones that were damaged were not rare, and so I lucked out. and, yes, I totally agree with you: only order from trusted sellers. There are some sellers on eBay that are good but not all of them are good.

Great video, really insightful to see your thought process as a collector. I did find the movies distracting behind you because they were not neatly placed in order and looked like a mess. As far as getting a dvd as well as the Blu-ray, there isn’t a single reason I’d get the dvd(unless there’s a book).I find that packaging doesn’t make any difference at all when you want to watch something. For me I try to find the best edition right away, so my money is not spent twice on the same thing. When a movie gets upgraded from dvd to Blu-ray, the dvd usually goes into trash or I donate/sell if it’s a good one. The digibook releases are a question mark, like for All About Eve(also Criterion), or The Matrix (4K available). Question for you, should I be upgrading my Blu-ray releases of Breakfast Club, Silence of the Lambs, Leave Her to Heaven, Pans Labirynth, Election, All About Eve to Criterion at all and have you encountered this conundrum of duplicate releases among the studios?
@DaisukeBeppu4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! So I must say sorry about the background. This was an older video made before I gave much thought about KZbin backgrounds and the like (this is how my room was at the time of the video, which was made a few years ago). As for your comment, I am of the view that upgrading to blu ray is not always essential. (And I extend this view to any subsequently "higher" or "newer" formats.) Of course, it depends on the specific release, and, so there could be a specific reason (such as alternate cuts, great supplements, great presentation, etc.) that would make one want to upgrade. But there are also other cases where the DVD is very serviceable and, even, some people might say that some DVD releases are still superior to the relevant blu ray releases, again, depending on the particular title or release.

Hello, Daisuke. This is a fascinating video that lends real insight into the mindset of a serious collector. As a compulsive collector of symphonic music (and, previous to that, sci-fi first edition hardcovers), I have often ruminated on the “why” that led me to collect the things I do and whether I continue to collect these items (Beethoven symphony cycles, for instance) because I truly enjoy them or am simply satisfying the pleasure center in my brain whenever I hit the “buy” button. Am I happy or habitual? One thing you didn’t address is your preference for new or used versions of OOP Criterion titles. I am curious whether you seek out new versions and settle for used only when a new copy is unavailable. I always collect new if I can help it, I suppose because my fevered collector mindset attaches a stigma to an item that was in someone else’s collection. I’m always worried that it will smell! I have a manageable collection of Criterion films myself (about 20), and it is only the high prices that keep me from becoming compulsive. Anyway, thank you for sharing your comments on this subject. I enjoy your videos.

@DaisukeBeppu5 жыл бұрын
Hello! yes I find that it does. And so sometimes it means that some people might also be wanting to keep, say, both the DVD version and the newer blu ray version of a title. This also occasionally happens with laserdiscs, in that sometimes there is a feature on a laserdisc (i.e. a commentary) that is not found on any subsequent DVD or blu ray release. This doesn't happen all the time of course, but once in a while it does.

Once again, I loved hearing you talk at length about Criterion, my friend. I have one question: You may well know that here in the UK we have a branch of the Criterion Collection, but the release schedule is an odd beast, at times making little sense as to what titles we receive over here. However, the releases we get are almost exactly the same as the US counterparts, save for a few cosmetic differences to the packaging, usually in the form of our ugly ratings logos and changes of productions dates on the back of the case. Is this something you have ever considered collecting? I expect not, as it would be quite redundant, but they are technically different to the versions on offer in the US. Thanks again!
@DaisukeBeppu6 жыл бұрын
Elliot, thank you very much! So, this has been a question that I have considered many times before to be honest--whether to collect the UK releases or not. And, at the moment, I am choosing not to for now, if for anything because, since I have the titles already, it might be worth it more if I spent the money on other Arrow or Indicator releases, etc., as there are so many that I still have not yet gotten. However, I am closing monitoring the situation because if there is a change or if there is a reason that comes up that would make me want to collect the UK Criterions (like for example, if a UK Criterion release is DIFFERENT than a US Criterion release in the future), then I will likely change my mind and want to collect.
@silvarsofa30556 жыл бұрын
Elliot, good question. I’m so glad that there are U.K. Criterion’s, as it’s really expensive to get the USA versions, all be it there wasn’t a choice until 2 years ago. I’m with you on the U.K. release schedule. There is no information on Criterion’s website, on which films the U.K. are going to get. The only way I find out is by checking U.K. Amazon. Which means that if Amazon know what films are coming out in the U.K., then they must get that information from Criterion? So my question is, why don’t Criterion give a U.K. release schedule?
@ElliotCoen6 жыл бұрын
From what I've gathered, it's an offshoot of Sony's operations here in the UK, and not very much of a priority for them. We are slowly starting to see more interesting releases from them, so hopefully it improves over time!

@DaisukeBeppu6 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent question, vlad. Thank you for your time in watching my video and asking the question! So, yes, I can't think of a website that centralizes or aggregates such data into one source. I do know, however, that there are some Criterion-based Facebook pages where some members are very knowledgeable and have personally compiled such information or otherwise have helped me in figuring out the release history of certain titles. A few years back, the Criterion Collection released a hard cover coffee table book called Criterion Designs, where there were some pages devoted to many of the cover releases of the Criterion titles, and while such pages are not comprehensive, there are instances where multiple covers (with the differing Criterion logos) are shown for a single title. It is not a perfect resource in terms of completeness, but visually speaking it could be of some help.

Really great video, Daisuke! I just wanted ask a question. I am curious about what kind of Cinema is popular in Japan generally? Is there enough exposure to contemporary greats like Kore Eda or Sono Sion for instance? Or were the movies of other Arthouse masters like Kobayashi, Mizoguchi, Teshigara well known to the public at that time? Just wanted to get an idea. As our country,(India) because multiple number of film industries from different states thrive on pop commercial cinema, I would say off stream or Arthouse barely have space for the becoming well known. Even though the times are changing a bit, it feels somewhat sad ☹️

Hey there I greatly enjoyed watching your video! I’ve only just recently been introduced to the wonder that is the Criterion Collection and have a whopping total of 10. In regards to choosing which ones to get, did you have any methods which you would recommend? As in, if you have two spine numbers somewhat near each other did you go and bridge the gap? Or was it more along the lines of just grabbing them as you saw ones you were missing? It’s quite the undertaking trying to get through every spine and I’m wondering what might be good ways to start filling it out.
@DaisukeBeppu5 жыл бұрын
Hello! I think that, at first, and because of the overwhelming amount of titles that are in the CC, I would suggest going for the titles that you want to get and not necessarily worrying about spine numbering. Then after you have accumulated more and you still feel like you want to get more, then you can decide whether or not you want to pursue spine completion. I think though that spine completion is a tough thing because there are still a number of out of print titles. So I think that it is a good idea to focus on the titles that you want to get or are otherwise interested in. That way, you can maintain a healthy engagement with the films in your collection.

Hi Daisuke, do Japanese studios have a penchant for doing re-makes of classic Japanese movies? I only ask this because in the late 80s, I watched on Australian TV a modern Japanese film that centred around a doctor, or some professional person, who is diagnosed with terminal cancer, and his emotional journey after being diagnosed. This movie was in colour, and appeared to be a quite recent film at the time, with some nice visual effects, etc. I can't remember much else about it, other than that I thought it was a lovely, and brilliant movie. It sounds similar to the basic premise of Ikiru, but it wasn't that movie because it was in colour, etc. Might I have been watching a re-make, or a television movie of Ikiru? You probably won't see this question, as it's an older video, but if you have any info it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@DaisukeBeppu4 жыл бұрын
Hello and to answer your question, while I cannot say that I am a kind of expert in all of Japanese studio activity, I do notice that there are a lot of productions in Japan of remakes, and so I could also say that it is fairly common in fact. Speaking of Ikiru, I once saw a poster for a stage version here in Japan of Ikiru, and though I did not see the performance, I can say that as an example, Kurosawa's films have been remade in films and TV on many occasions I think.

I know I'm a couple years late to this video (just started collecting Criterion less than a month ago), but I wonder if you could explain the appeal of DigiPak versions (or maybe just point me to a video if you've gone over this previously)? I see on the /r/Criterion subreddit and here on your channel it seems that people seem to really like the Digipak releases. I tend to prefer the "Jewel Case" releases, as I feel they're MUCH more sturdy and IMO they look better on the shelf, especially since the plastic cases are all uniform and the digipaks are multiple sizes. I don't mind the Eclipse series being cardboard casings, since the design is still uniform across all of the volumes.
@DaisukeBeppu3 жыл бұрын
Hello Who Knee Verse Review, and welcome to the world of Criterion. I hope you are enjoying it. By the way, what titles did you get so far? I would love to know. Regarding the digipack question, so yes, as you suggest, the digipack packaging refers to the type of packaging that involves not a plastic snap case, but rather a robust packaging with the outer covering and the inside that usually is capable of holding a substantial insert booklet. I think the appeal from a collector perspective is the ability of a digipack to include a lot of packaging aspects, including any other paraphernalia regarding the release. Of course, the plastic case releases are also capable of holding robust inserts or the like, but at the same time, there are some limitations regarding the plastic casing which may or may not affect all collectors.

@@DaisukeBeppu I actually kind of went hog-wild and have (over the past ~month) purchased about 45 Criterions, 9 Eclipse sets, and 10 Arrow Academy releases. My favorite Criterion releases are currently Seven Samurai (#2), 12 Angry Men (#591), and Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films 1954-1975 (#1000). Thank you for explaining the appeal of the digipack releases. After looking through my collection, I have noticed that the Digipacks have a lot more interesting pack-ins. The one I think "stuck out" to me the most was the pack-in material for Dr. Strangelove (#821). The supplemental portions being extremely thematic got me to immediately dive in to the material, much like I used to with cassette/CD booklets when I was younger.

Hello Daisuke, You won't respond to this but here it goes. I'm a big animation enthusiast. One day, when I was on Vacation in December and was at a Barnes and Nobles, I noticed that there was a 50% off sale on The Criterion Collection. Not being accustomed or interested with some of the live action selection they had, I decided to go to one of the only few animated films in their line up. "Watership Down". When I popped in the disc, the menu looked amazing. And the entire film did, too. So, I was thinking "Why can't Criterion do this with more animated films" So, from a Criterion Collector's perspective, Do you think that Criterion should release more animated films? And if so, which one's do you think they should do? P.S. Animators use live action as a reference. So, could you recommend me some films in the Criterion Collection?
@DaisukeBeppu3 жыл бұрын
Hello essdee, and thank you very much for your comment. Oh yes, I think you point out something that could be said to be a kind of "gap" in the Criterion, namely the relatively little amount of animated works in the collection. This is a very good point. I think there could be a lot of possibilities with animation...for example, in the past, with laserdiscs, the Voyager Company (which was associated with what later became the Criterion Collection) released a number of speciality discs, on animation... such as for example the Quay Brothers or Brothers Quay, and another on animation shorts (like Aardman animation, etc.). I think that something similar could happen as an example, and it would be great if it could happen. I agree. Also, oh gosh, thank you for your question about the Criterion Collection as a whole. I have made a number of videos which are on this channel where I talk about a number of the films included in the collection, so perhaps you might find some ideas there. There are of course many other resources much better than my channel where you can find other Criterion recommendations. I hope you find a lot of titles that you like. And cheers. As for Ozu, perhaps I might suggest Tokyo Story or Late Spring, but really any Ozu is so worth it. Cheers my friend and I hope you are well.

I want to buy some criterion, but i don't know where to start. How many movies are in the criterion collection?

There are a lot. In the physical media catalogue alone there are over 1070 spine numbered titles with some of them OOP. There are also non spine numbered titles. There is also the Criterion Channel steaming service. I can suggest for example checking out the website at criterion.com and browsing there. Also there is a nice list on Wikipedia en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Criterion_Collection_releases Ultimately it depends on what kinds of films you like and what genres and filmmakers etc. based on that you can choose from the selection available. I hope you enjoy your Criterion journey my friend!
