My 2 cents... instead of creating empty audio files, you can create audio regions (Opt + Command + G on Mac). Your session will be 100 times lighter and you can extend/reduce the region as much as you want. Cheers!

You can also “force to target media” when importing session data. That will also make your sessions way lighter and way faster to reference the audio clips.

Clip groups mean you don't create any extra sound files. But they also have infinite handle, which is neat. Depending on what I'm spotting I'll use midi channels as well, because they don't affect track count. The only downside to midi channels is you can't reconform them if there is a change in the cut. Also by default double clicking the clip will open the piano roll, so you have to go shift + cmd + R, but you can change this in preferences.

Thanks for the tutorial! Can you make a video about recording foleys at a studio? Talking about the recording process, foley artists and some of that stuff?
@FilmSoundTutorials2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was planning on making a video like that, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. If you're really interested in foley, there's a documentary called "Actors of Sound" that talks about the history of foley and has a bunch of interviews with famous foley artists. I'm also featured briefly at the end haha. So you might want to check that out. Hope that helps!

Use region group which doesn't take any drive space. Car doors are considered sound FX.
@FilmSoundTutorials7 жыл бұрын
I feel like the blank clips will use almost negligible space. But good point. Yeah I've done car doors both ways. We have a car door in the foley stage so might as well use it. Thanks for watching!

Thanks you very much. Your video really opened my eyes in how things works in the background. I have a quick question about how to go in term of audio interface when recording foley with pro-tools. I have pro-tools with a Focusrite audio interface, however, I don't like the preamp on that audio interface. When I compare recording from that audio interface vs my sound device 633, I can see a big difference. However, I don't know how to connect my sound device with my PC. Can you point me to how the pro do it?
@FilmSoundTutorials3 жыл бұрын
So I'm a little confused about this question. Yes, the Sound Device 633 is a great recorder used on many film sets. Generally after recording audio, the audio mixer will then remove the SD or CompactFlash card from the device and plug it into a computer to copy the files. But it sounds like you want to use it as your audio interface by connecting through USB. Personally I've never seen anyone do that with a 633 before, but after some research here's a video of someone doing just that with the newer MixPre: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6nVeXaFi6minqM Not sure if it will work with the 633, but worth a try. Hope that helps!
@SophieGotraceMusic3 жыл бұрын
@@FilmSoundTutorials yeah, I ended up buying the mixpre. It's just easier. For foley, I will connect the mixpre on my laptop and run pro-tool. Like this, I can be mobile while recording foley. Thanks for your videos. They are really valuable

Hi! I have a question. When the foley recordist record it straight on top of the blank clip how did they going to do another take without overwrite the previous take?
@FilmSoundTutorials Жыл бұрын
In that case you would probably want to use Pro Tool playlists or have extra blank tracks to put the first take on. Although, many professional foley artists get the timing right on the first take, so that isn't necessary. Some shows will also give extra time to the SFX editor later on in the process to fix the foley timing if it is slightly off. Anyways, this is just an example of one way to record foley. Hope that helps!
@PufftasticJames43 жыл бұрын
For footsteps, I don't have a material box for that. Instead, I would go out and use my Zoom H1N and record from there. I would bring in my laptop so the footsteps would synchronize better (with a help of editing).

Michael! thanks for your tutorials, they are amazing! I want to ask you, do you never use the ambients and foley recorded live on film? Sometimes they have good quality and contextualize what happens well, what do you think?
@FilmSoundTutorials3 жыл бұрын
Generally no, normally the production sound team only records the dialogue on set and the rest of the audio is added in post. Sure, I'll use the room tone to fill the gaps in the dialogue and plenty of production sound effects are recorded with the dialogue, but normally sets are pretty noisy, so you don't want to record the on set ambience. Instead, it's generally better to use library background clips to help create the sonic identity of a location. Hope that helps!

Hello. How much time it takes to make foley sounds for film (for instance 10 min) and assemble it to movie?
@FilmSoundTutorials3 жыл бұрын
You can record foley for a 10 minute film in a day or two. Generally feature films have two weeks to record foley. But it all depends on the budget and the type of film it is. Hope that helps!
@crumpits1and1tea5 жыл бұрын
hello i have found that using option+command+G is better for placing clip markers as it is not writing actual audio files :)
@FilmSoundTutorials5 жыл бұрын
Nice! Great suggestion.
@jonasbretschneider Жыл бұрын
I don't realy get it: There are FX, PFX and Foleys. And in some cases these are the same. For example, why do you need to record an foley of the door that opens, when you added various sound effects in the previous video for that?
@FilmSoundTutorials Жыл бұрын
You need to layer different sounds on top of each other to make them fuller and more impactful. Another reason to layer SFX is for the M+E track when the film is being dubbed in a foreign language. Then you have SFX that can replace the PFX recorded in the original dialogue track (which was removed during the dubbing process). Thanks for watching!

@@BrakeZalmo Thanks for recommending the videos to people! So I'd like to make some tutorials on video game workflow but 1. Technically this channel is called Film Sound Tutorials so I'm not sure if I should rename the channel to something a little more generic before doing so and 2. I think any videos I make talking about video game workflow need to be approved by my company's HR dept to make sure I'm not giving away company secrets.
