So, I have something to add; I have memory problems due to traumatic brain injuries. Something I've noticed is that everyone is focusing on things she SHOULD remember or SHOULD NOT remember, when in reality brains are incredibly complex with different types of injuries dictating what kinds of memory issues you have. Having issues with memory like Dory does is a symptom of PCS, or Post Concussive Syndrome. When someone experiences a traumatic injury to the head, this usually results in a concussion. Many people recover completely from concussions, and have little to no side effects from them. PCS develops when the brain retains some symptoms of a concussion, e.g. memory problems, but Finding Nemo makes Dory's amnesia very cut and dry. She can't remember things that happen, and Matpat's assertion of procedural memory is spot on. Something I wanted to add is that memories can be recalled through triggers. I walk to the store, and see someone drop a watermelon. I take in the information, then forget it. Later, someone mentions that they had watermelon as a snack. I remember seeing a watermelon being dropped at the store. Then I forget that I remembered it. As long as my brain makes the connection that someone mentioning a watermelon brings up that memory, I'll continue to forget and remember that person dropping a watermelon at the store until it goes into my long term. That's what I think happened with Dory and the boat. She saw it, forgot it, and then someone mentioning the boat triggered an abrupt recall. (When your brain goes 'oh look a memory you didn't ask for' and you think about it out of nowhere.) To the people saying 'shouldn't she have forgotten that her amnesia runs in the family, if she can't remember her family in general?' Forgetting the injury that caused the trauma is really common. I personally can't remember any of mine. Sometimes the brain does this as a coping mechanism. If her way of coping was to believe that her amnesia was hereditary, instead of due to an injury, that's normal. Since she repeats that, it goes with procedural memory. She may not remember her family if she got the injury when she was young, because long term memory in ANYONE is faulty after a certain age. It's like how you know you've met a relative when you were younger, but can't say a thing about them. This turned into an essay so I know anyone who comments didn't read the whole thing, which is honestly fine. I just wanted to stake my claims.
@brocoverbeygaming47149 ай бұрын
I read the whole thing, and now I want to tape down Matthew and talk about a cartoon fish that really DOES have amnesia and she's not faking it because of the info you put, But what if the parents are the ones who convinced her to move on from that injerey, what if they caused it and don't want her to know and thats why they tell her to not go to the reef or whatever, But hey, THATS JUST A THEORY

I agree, I also have memory problems, although it is not anywhere near the severity of Dory’s, (maybe), and some of the points in the theory are true, but also Dory could still have memory issues on top of all of this. What Matpat forgets is that this disability, in real life, isn’t a 100% thing for everyone afflicted. Sometimes, symptoms can disappear and reappear randomly for different people. There are coping skills and other things that they can do to remember. Dory can still occasionally recall thing’s without forgetting even if it is in her short term memory. Having memory problems doesn’t always mean that in every scenario it will play out the same.
@Aubsydinklegirl7 жыл бұрын
Guys, what if Dory's parents manipulated her thinking at a young age, telling her she had short term memory loss? If this was the case, she would not know what "true" short term memory loss was, but her parents would reinforce traits that would make her dependent on them. Even in Finding Dory her mother and father are crying saying, will she be okay? Which we assume in the movie is just worried parents hoping their child with memory loss will properly enter into society, but it could be parent who have deluded their child into being less than they are. This has happened in some cases with children, loving parents with good intentions that isolate their baby or keep their kids from feeling "normal". Kids are super impressionable

What if it isn't brain damage based amnesia? Several mental disorders, such as ptsd, multiple personality disorder, and dissociative disorders can have memory loss as a symptom. This could explain why her memory loss isn't strictly short term or long term, because it's based on anxiety and dissociation.
@ResidentMilf5 жыл бұрын
I have medication-induced memory loss, and it's sort of short term memory loss, but also sort of not. My problem isn't storage, it's recall. The memory is in there, it's bringing it to the surface that's the problem, and the newer the memory is the harder it gets. I often will struggle to remember a single word in a sentence, or fail to remember a specific detail such as who bought me a gift (even though I remember that it was a gift) or what I had for lunch yesterday. My procedural memory is extremely good, and there are several things I can do (sometimes very well) that when asked to recount the steps, I have to actually picture myself doing it in my head in order to be able to do so, if I can at all. If I am interrupted while telling a story, I have to be reminded of what point in the story I was. My symptoms are actually extremely similar to Dory's. Like the identifying sea creatures bit. When the school of fish are doing impressions, the shape may not be enough by itself to trigger the correct word in my brain, but other identifying factors might be just what I need. Maybe the shape combined with large teeth and gills could pull the word "shark" from my brain when the shape alone failed. And I frequently struggle with answers because it's not a case of "file not found" like it would be with retrograde, it's a little more like "enter password." A word being on the tip of my tongue is a frustratingly common occurrence, as I try to pull the word up from my uncooperative brain.

What if Dory's amnesia is Munchausen by Proxy? Which is when a person thinks they're sick because they have been convinced by someone else that they are. In Finding Dory, Dory's parents are practically paranoid about Dory forgetting things so easily that they hover over her. What if Dory hit her head when she was very young and forgot something temporarily, but her parents still treated her as if she was sick, convincing her young mind that she IS sick. The flashes of memories of her parents wouldn't happen if she actually had amnesia, but if she had repressed memories from the traumatic experience of being separated from her parents that would reinforce her "amnesia" but also allow the possibility of memories resurfacing so she goes looking for her parents in the second movie. ALSO Dory's parents actually told her that if anyone asks, to tell them that she has short term memory loss. Just a thought. Ps: if she did repress memories of losing her parents, it is possible that the only she remembered from her past is her parents telling her to say "my name is Dory and I have short term memory loss" so for all she knows she actually DOES have short term memory loss.

She does remember that an octopus has 3 hearts, but until she meets Hank in Finding Nemo, she connects the dots about where she learned that fact. Same with Bailey’s echolocation. Also, she couldn’t remember the address, she was sad that Marlin was abandoning her. Sometimes even my son does that. Same with her first sad breakdown moment.

Correction. “I survive by lying about an illness, it runs in my family” fits way better. But if she did suffer from it then it would be procedural memory since we’ve seen her say that to every fish she talks to, seen in her backstory when she was a lost child sooooo she could have a chance of remembering that phrase

I asked myself a question while watching this video and even did a google search to see if any KZbinrs actually did it, and no, not a single one has. The question is: Dory can't speak whale on account of Dentiny the whale shark that she speaks to and claims to have learned whale from. Yet she apparently "speaks" to an actual whale in finding nemo.

I have a theory: dory’s parents told her she had short term memory loss all through her life because they wanted her to be safe. That’s why she always fakes forgetting things. She’s used to being told to fake it til she makes it
@heartscoffin26654 жыл бұрын
theory: during dory’s childhood she got lost and was taken to P. Sherman 32 Wallaby Way, Sydney which is the reason she remember the address and knows how to read because of how many signs with words on them are in the building and all over the park and also seeing/hearing people read the signs helped her distinguish different letters

Like the little mermaid who committed suicide by tossing herself into the ocean and dissolving into foam. See, I know about the origins of fairy tales too. But point taken. The most common use of fairy tales in the past was parables in order to coerce children to behave properly, thus the dark ending to most of them. "happily ever after" never happened in the original versions.

I know it's just a fun fan theory, but it might be interesting to note that amnesia can be triggered by extreme anxiety in those with severe anxiety disorders. Memory loss is yet another symptom of anxiety. This would explain why Dori can remember some things but not others, and why remembering gets more difficult as she feels more and more emotional stress, or even just when she's put to the test (the fish asking her to name animals)... and also why her memory gets better as she feels more and more relaxed and safe and loved. Also, it's important to note that anxiety is not triggered necessarily by things healthy individuals would feel anxiety from (as when Dori meets a shark), but is triggered by moments that might hit past traumatic events (Dori's abandonment issues, why she has trouble remembering the address when Merlin leaves her) and even things that don't really make sense to either a healthy person or the person experiencing anxiety, it just IS a trigger for no noticeable reason. I think it's much more likely that Dori misdiagnosed herself (or her parents misdiagnosed her) as someone with short term memory loss, when in reality she has a complex mental illness that severely affects her ability to function 'normally.' Anxiety disorders are both inherited and also created by traumatic events, and are classified as General Anxiety Disorder, PTSD, Panic Disorder, etc. It's likely that Dori's condition existed from a very young age, and then worsened as she lost her family.
I think she has dissociative amnesia, caused from anxiety too. This shows when she's faced with a shark, she seems to forget that sharks are dangerous. She may just have blacked out that knowledge to feel safer, because that may have been a stress event prior or in the moment. This could explain the "selectivity" of what she forgets.
@amynelson75797 жыл бұрын
Casey oooh very interesting thought
@hatsuOkisu Жыл бұрын
It seems far more likely that she has trauma induced memory recall problems. It could explain why she remembers when she is around Marlin. Because he makes her feel safe and happy. This would alleviate some of the stress on her brain and even out her brain’s chemicals, allowing her neuro-pathways to function more normally. But hey thats just a theory

Or, even though Dory's main character trait is short term memory loss, she needs to be able to remember some things to move the plot along. The instance where she cannot remember the names of the fish allow for Marlin to show his personality, and the shark instances would more commonly be seen as repetitive phrasing, not actual meaning.

I’d also like to point out that Dory remembering the boat from Finding Nemo is one of the key factors that keeps the plot progressing. By remembering the boat and the *direction* it was going in *throughout the whole movie* Dory helped Marlin significantly. But there are three things wrong here: 1. As discussed in both videos Dory shouldn’t remember the boat 2. Dory also shouldn’t remember the direction the boat was going in 3. Even if Dory remembered the boat and direction *once* by some miracle, she should’ve forgotten at some point

But then she says "it went this way!" She was talking about that specific boat.

I actually faked amnesia in 5th grade to avoid doing work for the day, it "magically" came back by the time the bus showed up, I was a huge dick, I faked a lot of stuff to get out of doing work.

Dory, faking inability to remember names: keeps calling Nemo the wrong name. Me, who has trouble remembering names: it’s amazing how easy it is to have conversations without ever mentioning anyone’s name. Literally everyone who I’ve ever met who has trouble with names covers it by finding ways to avoid saying someone’s name, if you don’t call someone by their name they never have to find out you can’t remember it.
