I saw this movie two times in a row when it first came out a bit ago. I babysit two boys, one is 5 and the other is 7, and they lost their fucking minds over this movie, especially the youngest. They laughed when the dog shit, they hated zeus with so much passion, and they cried when they thought Marmaduke was dead. The second the movie ended they had me restart it and we watched it again. It was torture. I've been trying to forget this movie ever since, and I thought I was going to make it to the grave without ever seeing this nightmare ever again, but no. Here I am. Thank you Danny

Even as a kid, I remember just hating movies where the whole joke was "horrible untrained dog causes endless misery." No it’s probably because when you sign a contract, the studio/company usually requires you to do multiple projects for them. Like Tom Huddleston‘s Disney contract forced him to be in the awful Kong movie that’s nothing like roles he would normally choose. I think the thing with a lot of bad Netflix animation nowadays is that the animation is 3D when it could very well look better in 2D. I feel like whenever artists create sketches of characters, it doesn't always translate right in 3D. Like I know that 3D is technically faster and cheaper, but idk I feel like the integrity of whatever movie they make declines heavily just because the movie's executives want to do 3D since it's so trendy rn. Like it's been proven time and time again for years by companies like Laika and Studio Ghibli that a movie doesn't have to be made in a 3D software for it to become successful.

Every clip he showed, it was like the characters lips didn't line up with the word sounds, the timing was off, they were over "acting" (which in animation means moving too much for no reason)... And they clearly had the budget to do better, unlike a lot of the bad animated knock offs he reviews 😂

To answer the question; yes, they do it on purpose. They know that people will watch it either way, either because they're kids and don't know any better, they're loyal to the brand and will uncritically accept anything that's put in front of them, or just out of bile fascination. Doesn't matter what the quality of the movie is, it'll be found and it'll be watched and that's all they need. So why make one good movie that takes a year and $70m to make when you could make 100 bad movies that each cost a fraction of the price and make the same amount of money (if not more) all put together?

Thats how horrible shows or movies are made. Its so dumb to record a voice over and then work on an animation 😂 like you need to get the feelings down and the tone down right by looking at the animation and try to mirror the lip sync
@cultureshock9162 жыл бұрын
@@jennaisela Yeah I don’t know why the voice is always done beforehand when I watch Disney behind the scenes stuff. Maybe cause they think it’s easier to get the timing right by going back and moving things in the animation to match the audio, rather than having to speak perfectly in real time down to every syllable.
@_____________a_a2 жыл бұрын
@@jennaisela it’s easier to time the lip syncing when you already have the voices. They usually show the storyboard and have directors while the voices are being done. Also they’ll probably do multiple takes with some different vibes to them to make sure they get the proper mood and feeling to the scene. Have you seen anime dubs in the US? that’s animation before voices.
@HelloHamburger2 жыл бұрын
@@_____________a_a Any dub is voice after the animation, but the original production is almost always voice first. I don't know much of anything about the process, but I would assume it's because animation is such a long and tedious process that it's a lot easier to get voices done first, so that the animators can have voice cues to sync with. And, if the VAs had to sync to finished animation, it could be difficult to keep up with the pace. Like, with no human voices to guide them, the animators are likely to make costly mistakes and make the lip movements look stiff and nonsensical. Therefore, the voice actors could have to speak really fast or really slow which could look unnatural, or, speak at a good pace, but risk the mouth movements looking off. It could make it look uncanny and unnatural either way. I'd say it makes both VAs and animators jobs easier to do it voice before animation/visuals.
@_____________a_a2 жыл бұрын
@@HelloHamburger yeah, I just said anime dubs since I thought the people in the reply section would understand better. I’m wanting to go into the industry (and do a bit of amateur animation as a hobby) so I’m aware of how the process generally works out. Thanks for the infodump though!

One of the main problems with the animation of this movie is that it is clearly more suited to 2D than CG. You can’t just animate anything in CG because the fact that it is 3D inherently chips away at the suspension of disbelief and gets closer to the uncanny valley. Characters with super exaggerated proportions just look weird in CG. It’s like how Fairly Odd Parents characters just didn’t look right when animated in CG for the Jimmy-Timmy Power Hour. I mean just look at how much better the designs of the end credits 2D animations look.

The sad part about this movie, which I _may_ never watch, is that it's just another film studio trying to milk a cartoon/comic strip that was loved by other generations. I've read only a handful of strips before, so I went onto the Go Comics website to read some of the earlier funnies. Being a comic established in the mid-1950s, Marmaduke has a lot of the charm that Lil' Folks (later known as Peanuts) had; classic one-liners along with a charming illustration. I even read a couple of the newer strips, and it seems the comic still holds up to its legacy, even after its original author passed away seven years ago. However, the movie adaptation is horrendous. Disgusting humor, unbearable character design, and bland story telling. Blue Sky _nailed_ it with _the Peanuts Movie_ in 2015. With Craig and Bryan Schulz, son and grandson of Charles Schulz, in charge of the screenplay, every part of the movie was sculpted with care to ensure that it wasn't a soulless reboot, but a love letter to one of the greatest comic strip writers and illustrators of all time. Getting back to Marmaduke, it's just a gimmick for mimic and cash. Blue Sky didn't incorporate any of today's modern humor, albeit, a few modern songs that felt surprisingly fitting, into _the Peanuts Movie,_ and stayed true to the humor Charles Schulz himself would've used in any of his other cartoons/strips. But _this?_ Brad Anderson wasn't even a _thought!_ It's just a generic, bad kid's movie with the shell of a wholesome comic that didn't deserve to be decimated by a bunch of rookies who animated this movie just to milk that cash cow. Boo. Stinky. Fart. Bad. This is comparable with Season 25 of Thomas the Tank Engine. Barf.

The Sad thing is, there is a Live action movie that is also Called Marmaduke, which came before this Animated Verson, and I actually liked the Live action Marmaduke, I thought it was decently Funny and it had a good message behind it and it had good actors, it even had George Lopaz in it, Idk how well the Original movie actually did but I actually kinda Enjoyed the Original movie, this Animated verson is a Complete Abomination Edit: In the Original Movie when Marmaduke Spoke the Human characters would only hear barking tho other animals would actually understand Marmaduke

Oh wow someone else who saw the live action one too! I was waiting for someone to mention it. For a moment I thought this might have been an adaptation of sorts, but it wasnt. Honeslty the movie could've worked rather well in an animated format, shame they ignored its existence. Though, it probably doesn't hold up well nowadays

Everyone is (rightfully) mad about the art/animation style, but what the everloving f*ck went wrong with the color grading?! Not only is there no color concept, but it's like they tried to make everything stand out at all times, absolutely destroying any contrast or focal point - not to mention the overdone saturation... Anyone making it through the entirety of this movie will simultaniously be suffering from mind-numbing boredom as well as sensory overload - really, great stuff for impressionable children 👏👏👏

You know the movie sucked when you get to the end credit alternative animation style scenes and like that concept better than the garbage you just had to witness for over an hour. The 2D cartoon Marmaduke in the end credits was fucking dope. How could they pass up something like that?
@HwoarangtheBoomerang2 жыл бұрын
Now that you bring that up, idk your age but, i can see this show working as a 22 min show (11 mins each ep) on 90s cartoon network if it were hand drawn. Like that old show "What A Mess" and "2 Stupid Dogs". With that in mind, it makes me wonder the age of the creators and if that was what they were going for. It even makes the body proportions make more sense. I should probably draw a cover of this in another style 🤔. Idk where to post it, though.

The fact that this is on Netflix feels SO disrespectful. As an animation fan, I hear about animated shows, GOOD animation shows, may I add, get cancelled all the time. What the fuck is that character design? That robotic ass animation? Even the underwhelming voice acting, HOW IS THAT ON NETFLIX??? Is the bar in hell as long as there's a single celebrity?

As someone who actually shows dogs it’s so funny to me how movies always make dog shows seem so wild and pretentious 💀 Like.. real dog shows are just a bunch of people who love their dogs trotting them around in a circle for a minute and then giving them cookies for doing a good job. Sometimes you get a ribbon for having a cool dog. Sometimes dogs make little mistakes and everyone laughs it off bc dogs are just like that. It’s a fun time, definitely recommend.

Maybe not the ones you go to, but a lot of dog shows reward dogs that are genetically deformed to be "cuter" So we get selective breeding for dogs with deformities
@kazzoey91642 жыл бұрын
@@darkithnamgedrf9495 Trust me, problematic breeders are a huge and constant topic of discussion for the majority of us who actually care about our dogs and their health 😅 Most of us are completely sick and tired of those people giving us (and their own breed!) a bad name by flaunting their ignorance. They are not the majority, and they are certainly not celebrated by the rest of us. The goal of dog shows is to promote and celebrate healthy dogs that are well suited for whatever role they are meant to excel at, whether that be companionship, herding, protection, or any of the many other things that dogs have helped us with through the years. They are incredibly educational and help a lot of people figure out what kind of dog they would best be suited for, encouraging responsible and informed dog ownership. Educated, prepared dog owners are the key to making sure that less dogs are being thrown into shelters by people who didn’t know what they were getting into.

I actually don't think its too farfetched to say a lot of these movies are trying to be the next morbius, or end up in a Danny Gonzalez video to get their traction.
