Okay, so The Emoji Movie is pretty darn bad. But that badness doesn't actually come from the movie itself. I mean, sure, The Emoji Movie is predictable and has cringe-worthy jokes and has a really awful "try hard to be hip for the kids" premise...but that's true of a lot of movies. No, The Emoji Movie is bad because it's one huge commercial. A commercial that is targeting children while blatantly breaking rules established by the FTC and FCC for disclosing branded advertising. So how deep does this rabbit hole go? Get ready for some Angry Judge emoji.

Product placement has been around since like the 20s. Fun fact: the creator of Butterfingers paid to put it in Baby Take a Bow and have Shirley Temple actually say the product name. It worked to get Butterfingers to be one of the huge candy bars that we all know and love today.

You know what's even weird about "The Emoji Movie"? It was directed by the same guy who did "Lilo & Stitch 2" and "Igor". And apparently he only wanted to make this movie because he didn't wanna be out of a job, since he was originally gonna direct DreamWorks' "Bureau of Otherworldly Operations". But unfortunately, it got cancelled when DreamWorks shut down their Pacific Data Images studio in Redwood, California back in 2015 and laid off all 500 of their employees, with one of them being the director, names Tony Leondis.

I do feel the need to point out that movies are directly paid for viewing by consumers (unless they were pirated.) Movie theatre tickets are through the roof, and to watch at home, you have to either buy or rent the movie or pay for a streaming service. KZbin and other services akin to it are typically completely free to watch and accessible from just about anywhere at any time. Therefore, the fairness lies in the viewership exchange for service. A movie is a different platform than a tv show, which is a different platform from online video. Now, when the continued implementation of mid roll video ads on KZbin, I would argue that it is getting closer to old fashioned TV show experiences and should probably be considered as such.

The problem here is that I as a consumer am more likely to buy from an individual person on a vlog that seems genuine than I am to buy from a movie conglomerate. So I expect there to be product placement in a movie or a TV show and that might not affect me. But if my favourite influencer is saying oh I picked up this new moisturiser today and it's great. The fact that they are being paid for it needs to be front and center, because I have no way of knowing whether they're being genuine or not. It's been the big problem with like those fitness teas on Instagram that nobody's been disclosing for some reason, personally, I know they're not doing any good but there are people out there, but I'm more impressionable that don't necessarily think that their favourite influences are lying to them

I work in an ER, and im not kidding, i actually had several people come into the ER, asking to be admitted because they couldnt stop crying and were depressed because of how bad that movie was. It was so bad, it drove people into depression. I went to see it, to see if it was really that bad, or they were just being dramatic, and i got about 15 minutes in before i walked out and demanded a refund. Then i went home and ate a gallon of icecream.

I'd like to say I fully agree it should be disclosed if a movie is sponsored. Tbh, a lot of movies at least used to do the whole "starring" thing at the start where it'd show main stars on screen while zooming across landscapes or while things just kind of start rolling. Just put the sponsors there. It won't cut out creativeness meanwhile fairly disclosing. (I have not gone to a theater or watched normal movies in... years. So I don't know if they still do that. I'm remembering from Spiderman [Toby Maguire version] I think? I think that's where I remember seeing that.)

Not sure of your age, so I'm gonna simplify this as much as possible. If the video was age restricted, kids wouldn't be allowed to watch the theory, and therefore be unable to dislike the theory constantly trashing the movie they probably like because they are kids. Therefore, the audience would only have adults who generally agree with Matpat because yeah the movie is awful and the movie is terrible, therefore resulting in a minimal amount of dislikes since mostly kids would be mad at this theory.

To be completely honest, I’m a teenager and still when I saw that scene in the theatres with my younger siblings, it didn’t even occur to me that it was an advertisement because I’ve seen so many similar things in children’s movies, I just assumed it was them trying to waste time to make the movie longer and they used a game that most of the middle aged mothers taking their toddlers to see the movie would recognize and appreciate. I think if they had been more upfront with their sponsorship than I would’ve been able to see that scene for what it was instead of just a big waste of time where you can refill your popcorn and drinks.

I think the difference tho between like a blog or youtube and movies are that one the advertisement is just a piece of the set and a fictional character is saying how good it is. Where for the most part, youtubers using paid product advertising isnt being at all creative with it and are just playing as themselves telling everyone how great the product is which can come off more as be honest and genuine, and a fan of that REAL LIFE person could take in every word they say and think they are being honest. Where movies, it's all fiction, it's usually just referenced and shown, and it's closer to a subliminal message than someone you feel like you know personally that you trust is recommending you a product. A pretty big difference. Not saying it isnt unfair. It totally is, coz at the end of the day they both are paid product placement. But the impacts are entirely different because of the nature of what audiences expect between a fictional movie, vs someone they feel they trust for opinions.
