We talk about Filson’s double tin pants and Woolrich wool shirts. They may be clothes of an older generation but are they still practical today? The big question is are Tin pants and wool shirts worth the money?

I am 66 years old and grew up in the pacific northwest in an area where logging was king. All the old loggers never had raingear back in the day. They wore wool union suits and just went to work rain or shine. Those guys were sure tough and a different kink of people for sure

Happy New Year Brian and your Wife! Yes it's a never ending business in making your homestead to your liking, and as you stated a learning curve. Those wool shirts were worn by most of the miners under our overalls when I first started mining on the upper levels at the now closed Dome Mine, as it was a might chilly especially when tramming ore. Anyways as usual I loved your weekly vlog again, Cheers to you!

Great information. This is our first winter in a way colder area. My daily outfit is a merino blend long sleeve. Same for the long underwear. Wool socks, a double lined hoodie. Some faller pants and Baffin Tornado boots. Neck buff and a toque. Comfortable to -10c when moving doing chores. Today was -16c with a strong wind. Always looking for clothing tips for working outside.

Happy New Year you two!🥳🎊🎉🎈 thanks for the wear info. Cabbage looks great. Great experiment! I love wool & was able to get Army surplus blankets and winter suits, military backpacks etc. I heard about 100 mph winds in Alaska and was concerned heard nothing about slides. That to me is amazing part of U.S. and hear nothing. Saw on youtube today 2 U.Z. warships blown up by China but not on TV news so far here. I had much larger greenhouses (8' x 24') like these in Hawaii that had the same problem. The solution we came up with was to drill a hole through the PVC pipe and into the wood then put a screw in it. That worked for several years before we moved. (Just a note, but here in the Colorado mountains where there is limited light at times and lots of wind, we always put the greenhouses east to west for maximum sun exposure for the plants.) This has worked for us, give it a thought and see if it fits into what you are doing.

It’s been a weird warm and rainy December. I have a Filson coat that I used to wear, but they’re not completely waterproof as you said, so I ended up with Grundens from head to toe, but you’re right about the problem with tears especially when walking through brush with the lighter weight material. I wear cashmere sweaters that I buy second-hand when I’m down south visiting family because I’ve found that the fabric is warm but not as bulky as wool, but it tends to come apart at the seams more easily. So much of my clothing is ripped to shreds right now and I really need to bust out the sewing machine.
@AnAlaskaHomestead
@AnAlaskaHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
I have a set of Grundens for the sideways rain kind of days. 😂 This has been a warm yet windy winter. Cashmere, sounds like a good choice. I guess we both need to sit down one day and do some patch work on our cloths😂

Lived in Southeast in remote areas for seven years, another seven in towns there. Wore Filson pants for all of the seven years. A pair would last me one year. Then they cost $100. I still have a pair but they are a little too small now, 34's. Nothing works as well in the woods. Can fall down in a devils club patch or roll down one when you slip on the side of a mountain, with the pants and the filson jacket you won't get many stickers. Went goat hunting with a friend who had heavy gore tex pants and jacket. By the time he got back down off the mountain that jacket and pants must have had two hundred thousand devils club spines in it, he fell down a lot, and he had a few thousand in his own self that went through the gore tex. I had a few dozen in my hands..

15:40 clips?? In my childhood babushka used steel tubes to fix down garden bed covers. Long steel tubes for sides and hose covered with thin braided steel wire on top. A lot of steel things. 17:55 - I am not specialist but I also would dig few drainage ditches. Soil looks incredibly fat and rich by the way.

As a Young man in the early 70s I joined the merchant Marines and started shipping out. The old seamen I met onboard called their foul weather gear. “Oil skins” apparently in the 1800s Old worn out sail canvas was made into jackets and pants and coat with linseed oil and wax to make “oil skins”.

Cotton is a summer cloth as it is good at moving moisture but not keeping heat in. Wool is a fall/winter cloth as it is made for the sheep to keep warm even in snow. Have you thought about building a greenhouse for the chicken run? A wood frame with a slope to shed the snow off, Wood sides up a few feet as they would get blocked by snow anyways and plastic over the top for the light to get in. Easy to cover the lower sections of the walls with the slab wood off the chainsaw mill as it is just there for keeping animals out and with the overall structure easy to add the electric fence around it for bear protection. Could even set it around the current coup so it would just be a longer chicken run over the area so no more snow to deal with inside it.
@AnAlaskaHomestead
@AnAlaskaHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
That’s something to think about. We really do have a lot to think about when it comes to our future. How many more birds will we get, what other animals, will we need a bigger coop? All in time I guess. We will just keep inching our way forward.

I keep driving to Monterey Bay for whale-watching trips to see orcas. I've seen grey and blue whales and other beautiful and amazing creatures. I hope God will let me live in Alaska some day. Not just as a touristy visitor, but as a resident for the rest of my life. Hey, can yalls do a video on the requirements for fishing up there? Like, fishing licenses, common fish and other water critters that can be fished (don't know the actual term for fishing for stuff other than fish lmao!) for locals.
