Hi Dustin. If you should choose one of these kits, which one would you choose, taking architecture- (mainly outdoor, sometimes interior) and landscape photography in to consideration? I will use the a7R IV. Don’t bother about other zooms or telephotos, as I will cover that at some other point. But I’m mainly a prime user. 1. Batis 18mm, Loxia 25mm, Batis 40mm 2. Laowa 15mm, Loxia 21mm, Batis 40mm 3. Sigma 14-24mm, Loxia 21mm, Batis 40mm I currently own both the Sigma 14-24mm DN and Zeiss Batis 18mm, but I’m not really satisfied with either. Taking my tests in to consideration, the Sigma seems decentered, whereas both of the bottom corners are softer than the upper corners and that of the Batis. They are relatively soft, while the upper corners are slightly sharper than that of the Batis. The Sigma is just as sharp in the middle, but the Batis’ corners are very even and very sharp most of the time at f/5.6, whereas the bottom corners of the Sigma don’t sharpen up at f/5.6, and I’m not going to stop more down. I wanted to settle down with the Sigma, as the majority of users of this lens state that this wide angle pretty much has the most even performance for any wide angle lens, extremely sharp and well-corrected and generally versatile. And the fact that I will get 14mm with very even sharpness was just another bonus. I can work with 18mm, but if I could get a bit wider with a bit more even sharpness across the frame, that would be nice. But the rendering of the Zeiss, weight, design and access to more filters might make it more attractive to me. The design is unique and attractive to me like most of their lenses. I wonder how they all compare on the a7R IV. It will at least be more noticeable.
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
If your Sigma 14-24 is decentered, get it replaced. It's too new a lens to deal with that. I would have recommended your trio of lenses #3 anyway.
@Carbonisation5 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott Good choice. I will either resell it or return it within next week. But I would be bored only using a zoom, so I thought that it would be nice to settle down with the phenomenal Zeiss Loxia 21mm. I also like the manual focus experience in some aspects, and this Zeiss is really the best one can achieve with wide angles when it comes to the Sony FE mount. And I’m all about true color and contrast when it comes to natural scenes. For architecture, I simply want something wide with edge to edge sharpness. I’m not so worried about distortion, as I’m not right up the buildings, and it’s usually not too big problem with high quality modern wide angles and a bit editting. Thank you as usual, Dustin!
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
A great architecture choice on Sony (the one I use) is the Laowa 12mm F2.8 (Canon EF version) combined with their MSC which gives you a 17mm F4 lens on Sony with 10 degrees of shift in any direction. It makes getting straight lines a breeze...and with great detail and no vignette.
@Carbonisation5 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott That sounds like a very good option as well. Which adapter would you recommend from EF to FE with the Laowa when wanting 12mm? If I will buy this combination, I’ll use a normal adapter and the one you mentioned. I’ll get a Loxia 21mm with it or keep my Batis 18mm and get a Loxia 25mm. I tested the Sigma again and it is surely decentered. The bottom corners never get as sharp as the upper corners. While the upper corners are just slightly sharper than that of the Batis, the lower corners are a good bit softer. I think my Batis is a good copy, and I kind of want to keep it, even though I would love a Loxia 21mm. If I would get the 21mm, I would want something between 21mm and 40mm, say a 28mm, but I don’t like the 28mm options. But the Loxia 25mm is just as good, and I think this kit would be more versatile for me. I will have to think a bit more. Even though the Sigma could substitute some primes, I just don’t think it’s for me. 25mm would also be nice for some street photography beside my 40mm.

I think at 6 stop and 10 stop, the green color cast in the skin especially is distinct. When comparing the nd's affect on sharpness, it is the quality of the glass the major factor. At 10 stop the sharpness of the entire photo is reduced because the trees were moving. The effect of reduced sharpness among the nds should be the identical. The thicker coating of the 10 stop should not matter as much. At least I think.

I see the biggest issue with this type of lens filter with using the 10 stop filter as AF is typically not working any longer and even MF can be difficult (when not having the possibility to temporarily remove the filter for accurate focusing)
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
That's actually very much lighting specific. In all my test shots I used AF successfully even with the 10 stop filter in place. Modern mirrorless cameras actually are pretty amazing in getting AF in low light conditions. I noticed that you showed the fitting of the filters indoors. I have no doubt of the quality but to remove the lens and fit these filters in the field is asking for trouble. Dust, dirt and water can easily get on the rear of the lens and filter never mind the sensor of the camera. Particularly with mirrorless, I shoot Sony A7's and the sensor is like a magnet for dust. To remove the lens fit a filter is a no go for landscape shooting. Only my opinion, thanks as always for the video
