How to change engine oil on a Honda ADV 150 (draining oil from FILTER side) is a simple, yet critical maintenance procedure. I change the motor oil annually because it's a low-cost, fast, and enjoyable process. It's more important to change engine oil at regular intervals. Find the method (there's several) that works best for you.

The OIL FILTER draining method is a little more sloppy so be careful with this, but I've seen videos where people do it this way to save time when they are working in a very busy repair shop. Since you should inspect the oil filter anyway they drain the oil from there, which gets most of the oil out. Just note this is an 'alternate' method. I prefer (as most do) doing it from the actual oil drain plug which is on the other side of the bike.
METHOD #2 - (My Other Video) I demonstrate the preferred draining method and share some interesting tips and nice products that will make the process even easier.

Regular oil change intervals are more important that the process. There's things I could have preformed smarter, but the goal is to change the engine oil. There's lots of videos on the topic so do what works best for you. I'm not perfect and it's not necessary. Your engine loves clean, fresh oil on a regular basis. Make it happy and it will treat you well for many years to come! 😎

Is there is a 12mm oil drain plug on the other side that's pointed down that needs to taken out? I'm going to check my bike after I get done cutting the grass to see if there a 17mm and 12 mm drain plug.
@maxfacts1

There are 2 drain plugs a 17mm on the kickstand side and a 12mm on the other side face down, not sure if both need to removed to do a oil change.

I drained my oil with scooter on side stand no mess, when oil stopped draining I put it on the center stand appears all the oil came out.
@Trekopolis

Makes sense. The center stand is not in the ideal spot to drain oil. 🙃 Next oil change I'm using side stand. 🤣👍

Just an fyi, the Honda manual does not spec what oil to use in the gear box. I bought the Honda service manual for the ADV and it specs the same oil for gear box and engine, 10w30 JASO MB.

Ok, thanks for the info. BTW, do you have a link or other information for the service manual? Seems challenging to find. 🙏

thx bud, i'm planning to change my second oil around 3K. I use the same honda brand you do but i bought the biggest container size available so its even cheaper 😆because of that i have a pre-measured cup where i pour the oil and then into the scooter. I noticed another person commenting about the bottom oil drain bolt but i like the side bolt like you because i check for residuals on the filter plus to clean (special cleaner) it after the oil change. I'm at work but i can find you the oil drain bolt torque number when i get home as well for the filter sprayer cleaner name i use. On a different note, there was a guy video i found that he bought a magnetized oil drain bolt which i found a cool idea, to catch metal residuals and i think for the bolt to stick into the scooter bottom metal instead of falling into the oil pan and getting all messy. Take care and see you on the next one 🙂

I'm going to make a video on that method too for the other drain plug. I've seen both actually. Since you have to inspect the filter, it's just one less bolt to mess with, but I do think the drain bolt on the other side would allow a tad more oil to escape, but not enough to warrant any negative impact. The magnet plug is a good idea too, agree. Back to work! 🤔 Never ends. 😂✌️ Stay tuned!

Actually it's better to use the main drain located below the engine. You only need to open that oil strainer every 2 or 3 change oil to clean the debris.

What do you recommend also doing for for the first oil change? Should i do the gear oil on the second oil change?
@Trekopolis
@Trekopolis 3 ай бұрын
Gear oil like every 10k or two years so depending on those factors I'd say. It's easy enough like most maintenance on that bike. Really not much else with 1st oil change.

11/16 socket only made rounded edges on that bolt for me. Nothing seems to fit it, I am having the worst time trying to figure out what socket I'm supposed to have or use
@Trekopolis
@Trekopolis Жыл бұрын
The service manual doesn't even state the proper socket size, I hear you. I have both metric and standard sockets so I usually carry my socket set over to where I'm working and try different ones until they fit best. Sometimes the bolt sizes seem to never agree with anything 100%. If you're rounding corners your socket or wrench is slightly larger than the bolt head. Drop down a size and try the MM/standard combinations until you find one that fits better. It could also be your socket set or wrenches. Researching the best socket set is like going down a rabbit hole all the way to Australia because it's a very opinionated topic. I use Craftsman. My father was a mechanical engineer and that's all he used. I still have his set.

Not judging here, but the oil drain bolt is found under the right side and is at a lower point to allow a full drain of the oil. The side is specifically for the screen access. And add a GoldPlug MP-01 next time. ;)

Yeah, I've heard that before from someone in the Philippines, but even from the oil filter side it gets the majority out. I may do the alternative version in a future video. Thanks for the reminder! Good idea for the plug BTW. 🙏✌️

Did you use MA or MB oil?
@Trekopolis
@Trekopolis 2 жыл бұрын
For now just using the MA type cause the dealer said it's fine and comes from the factory like that. But, I am going to research more and by next oil change I'll have a better understanding on what to use. I have some ideas.
@johnadams3800
@johnadams3800 2 жыл бұрын
@@Trekopolis Same issue here actually. And the Honda customer service number and website are 6 shades of useless. When I asked the dealer any the oil, both ma and mb (which to my investigations is a lower friction oil than it's ma), they said it didn't make a difference for the purposes of my application. Yet the manual clearly states mb specifically, as well as being "sg" or higher, and mines "sj"...they didn't know what that meant. I was also sold a filter that looks like a regular motorcycle filter, so imagine my surprise not being able to locate an oil "filter" anywhere on the bike until I realized it was just that little screen, and not an actual oil filter. Unless I'm missing something here. The dealership was again completely useless in this matter. Btw, i have the 2022, and the oil plug bolt sizes are 12mm for the bottom pan and 17mm for the filter/screen plug.

@@johnadams3800 I think your good with the GN4 Honda MA oil for now as long as you keep up with regular changes. I don't it annually regardless. But, stay tuned for a future video on this. I'm gonna get more info for sure.
@Trekopolis
@Trekopolis 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnadams3800 Yes, the filter is actually just that mesh screen that only needs cleaned if necessary. Some people only clean it like every other oil change I read. It's easy to do so why not? I would not overthink the oil because as long as you change it regularly you'd probably get away with baby oil in there due to the Honda build reputation for their motors. :) I'm sticking with what the factory feeds it and sleeping well. When I have time I am going to drill down on this oil business and see what's ideal, if there is even an answer for that. I'm not holding my breath though.
