Yeah Auron did love Tidus and Yuna. He made a promise to Jecht and Braska. If anything Auron cared too much and he got worn down which is why you first think of Auron as this grumpy old man (which he kind of is lol) but he’s more than that when you play through the game multiple times.

Damn. I love this story. Final Fantasy gives us such a deeper look at the subject of maturity as Tidus is the audiences' eyes into this new form of Spiral that's alien to his perception of it! I know many people hate Tidus, but the story IS about him maturing into an adult, his prideful nature challenged by his lingering animosity towards his father. And just this scene alone shows us the relationship between Aaron and Tidus, and how he's become a father figure to Tidus. Still to learn that Jecht is alive and is Sin has him both distraught and confused, and it by this bombshell of a plot-point that it forces Tidus to accept that he doesn't know what to do or how to accept this truth yet.

That's one thing about the fanbase I didn't understand. This game came out in my early teens and even I understood Tidus' journey from a spoiled brat to an adult. From prideful reckless child to a mature, responsible leader. Furthermore, he was a great contrast to the other popular male leads such as Cloud or Squall. Tidus wasn't as sure of himself as he portrayed. He lacked confidence. He was terrified. He isn't a solider or a warrior bred for battle and must learn to survive in a world out to kill him at every turn. His attitude makes complete sense when put into actual context. This scene itself makes us aware of it. Auron : Or are you afraid? It's alright. A subtle reminder that we are dealing with a protagonist from a world without violence to the degree he is introduced to. To a protagonist with whom still exists some of his childish naivety and innocence. Auron both pushes Tidus to grow but also respects Tidus' being overwhelmed with emotions that makes it hard for him to take that first step towards moving forward but Auron pushes nonetheless because Tidus has little option "Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain, or live and face your sorrow!"

Tidus: "It can't be..". *Cue Wanderingflame* Auron: "It is. Sin is Ject." Tidus: "No! That's ridiculous! No way! I don't believe you!" Auron: "But it is the truth. You'll see for yourself. Come with me." Tidus: "If I say no?" Auron: "Every story must have an ending." Tidus: "I don't care about your stories!!" Auron: "I see... sorry you feel that way. Fine then. Come or don't come it's your decision." Tidus: "ARGH!!!! What am I suppose to say?!? You tell me it's my decision. But I don't have a choice do I? You're the only one that can tell me what's going on anyways. I have to go with you I have to!" Auron: "Irritating… I know.... or are you afraid?" Hand on Tidus's back/shoulder Auron: "It's alright." Such emotion. Such a powerful scene. FFX is THE BEST.

Quite powerful. Auron isn't disrespectful of Tidus' emotions or his situation. He is well aware that Tidus is facing a real dangerous terrifying road ahead of him, furthering this issue is the despair that not only is his only surviving parent alive, but a monster destroying all that he comes into contact with. However, the flip side to this is that Auron neither has the patience to coddle Tidus either. He wants Tidus to push forward, to grow, to stand strong instead of shrinking back in his despair. As Auron says later on, "Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and face your sorrow! "

When I first got to this scene, I felt like the twist came too early in the game. 16 years later and I still feel like it came too early, but it was necessary for Tidus to understand what Sin is later on and also growing a sort of relationship with Jecht as Sin, knowing that he has to end it once and for all. Good story telling but the twist came too early and in an underwhelming fashion to have the proper impact that the idea warranted

In a way yeah, but it also goes to show how much more there was to the story. The twists were everywhere. The pilgrimage being a lie, Yuna traveling to die, Auron being dead, Yevon slandering Zanarkand, the truth of what Tidus actually was. This is really just to get the ball rolling and puts everything else in a perspective to not seem to out of nowhere.

I don't think that was a big twist, and for me it was easy to predict. Instead, that small twist opened the story into more mysterious. Made me wonder so many curiosity to continue the story all day and night 😆

I don’t think it came too early, and if anything, it left more questions than answers. At this point in time within the story, we still had no clue why Sin is Jecht if they defeated him, how the summoners and their party manage to become Sin themselves, what Sin actually is, how it is that Auron who’s originally from Spira managed to get to Dream Zanarkand and back, etc. You can also consider this from the perspective of literally everyone besides Tidus and Auron. They’re the only ones who know for quite a while that the Sin they’re going to try and defeat is actually Tidus’ dad, but they’re willing to continue with their journey even after they find this out. It really opened up more possibilities within the story
