I think Ardyn was just the victim. The real villain in this story is the crystal of Eos which refused to accept the Healer even though he made such a huge sacrifice to restore peace to his people. All in all, well done Peasant! I've enjoyed your videos for the longest time but never had the motivation to post until today, when I finished XV and broke down in tears just as you did.

To answer your question, I completely sympathise with Ardyn. He's probably my favourite Final Fantasy character of all time, and I understand his motives. That doesn't necessarily make what he did right, but I get it.. and I can't say that if I were in his situation I would have done any different. Heck.. after ten years of healing in mmos I wanna watch people burn, and Ardyn had MILLENNIA to stew. Thousands of years of pain and loneliness. Yeah, I absolutely feel sorry for him. :(

Good video, you make a really compelling argument. The one problem I see with this is that we don't know how old the Lucius Caelum family is. We can safely assume that Ardyn was the first King of Lucius and the 'Chosen' from the info we have been given; but, that doesn't necessarily mean he was the first Lucius Caelum. His family could have been a noble one back during the days of Solheim so he could have been Lucius Caelum whatever number. Of course there is no way of knowing any of that so your theory/calculations are the most practical and reasonable to go by for now

Maybe Ardyn was supposed to sacrifice himself (like Noctis) to save the world but he chose to find another way, and ended up becoming a daemon himself. He wanted to fight against his fate but the Astrals weren't happy when he became tainted.

Just a thought though, it would be 'somewhat' believable to have 113 Kings of Lucis within those 2,000 years (not saying I'm with the wiki on Ardyn being 2,000 years old, just thinking of some justifiable reasons, or theorizing as you would call it :P) IF some of the Kings died during the war/any war (either physical death or from the Ring of Lucii-overuse/desperate acts/etc.). For all we know, there could have been brothers that took over or there could have been really young heirs (whose fathers died during battle and such). But despite this theory, 2000 years for 113 Monarchs does seem far fetch to me. And your theory did suggest that Ardyn would be 3,118 years old if the Lucis line went swimmingly well lol. I'd definitely say he is in the 3,000 years range. Other than that, keep up the good work Pez!

I think based on Nyx/Libertus and pictures of Galahd being quite foresty. I would say its not far from Tenebrae. Or even a sub nation of Tenebrae. Makes sense for it to be positioned between Niflheim and Tenebrae as thats how it would have got swept up in the Nif's conquest when it did.

Just 1 thing i want to add... you said none of the kings look young but thats a moot point since we are directly told the strain of the power ages and kills prematurely. also with that being the case seeing as Regis looked about 50 if he really was 50 it would mean he wasnt particarly aged by using the power despite using it consistantly from the point he erected the new wall. the biggest issues therefore are the inconsistances with certain parts which i think you have probably realized thats why its so hard to make concrete conclusions. on a final note.. there were 3 walls which were the city wall which surrounds the city, the old wall which are the guardians Nyx uses and the new wall which was the protective shield

Love your videos :D I'm hooked! But I wanna throw a thought out there regarding the 2000 years number and that is we know how much Square loves their allusions. So consider that - 2000 years approx is the give or take dates for the Life of Christ and the founding of the faith pon his sacrifice as a messiah figure. So looking at Adryn as a fallen messiah figure this begins to line up a certain type of mythology. Ardyn's is an 'Anti-Christ'. He's fallen, failed, rejected in contrast to to Noctis true messiah esque role. (self sacrificed himself to save everyone/redeem those enslaved to darkness. Plus Noctis is referred to often as the King of of Kings and the Latter Day King.) Also we have that concept art of Ardyn riding in the city on the Chocobo was is meant to evoke the Triumphant Entry of Christ ala the Palm Sunday tradition and if I'm mistaken there is one other piece of concept art meant to evoke a Christ like figure. That taken into account the number of 2000 isn't arbitrary because it's often dates things back to that 'era' of time from the modern age and with Eos being so influenced by a form of 'reality' ..that kinda lines up and we all know how much JRPG's love using Christian theology for their entertainment and storytelling. :D So just a thought that the 2000 figure isn't random per se although the numbers are odd in consideration of what isn't said. Is there a gap of time between the gifting of the crystals and all four nations being founded and the change over of the four nations to one calendar (four nations..I see you Type 0) and the thought that Ardyn may not have been the first king to begin with. Was he active before te crystal was given? the timeline throws a few wrenches into things as usually happens (Looking at yoU Ivalice 'timeline'..) Just another thought for theory crafting. :D

Question, or better yet, questions; why there are only 13 royal arms? why at the end of the game we see only noctis and 13 other kings (14 overall), what about the other 100 kings who came before? (99 if Ardyn was the 1st...) why didn't we see in the "beyond" more kings attacking Ardyn?? where are the other 100 Royal arms? or did the royal arms started only with the 100th king? therefore there are only 13 royal arms in noctis's time since he is the 114th...? BTW, I thought about the age of Ardyn in the following way: there are usually 4 generations in a 100 years... so or so. if noctis is the 114th in his bloodline, and Ardyin is the 1st ,or the one who betrayed him was the 1st.... that makes Ardyn 2000+ years old for sure but to be more accurate: 2,736 if a generation comes every 25 years, but let's just say around 2,500 years average overall...so or so.

Well...I have read the ultimania guide book and here is part of the timeline :the star scourge occurred about 2000 years ago and many people died for that,before the slumber astrals gave the ring of lucii and Crystal to the first king and he built the Lucian kingdom,later 12 statues was built which means there had been at least 12 kings,and AFTER THAT a healer appeared and calmed the disease, so it is quite possible that Ardyn was not the first king

not sure if someone else mentioned this first, but King Henry VIII had two daughters before he had his son, Mary and Elizabeth. Mary and Elizabeth took the throne after their little brother due to the laws of succession stating that the sons would take the throne before any daughters. Henry's first child was a stillborn daughter born in 1510, when he was 18. his first living child was born new years day 1511 when he was 19, though this child died at only 7 weeks old.

A lot of unnecessary thought went into this. A really simple one: each of the 113 monarchs of Lucis ruled for 17.69 years each on average. You assumed that as soon as each monarch sired an heir they would die and pass on their rule of Lucis to the baby. That doesn't seem like a long time to rule but when to take into account the number of monarchs that would have used the ring and the crystal's power to hold a barrier between Lucis, or just Insomnia and other powers that be, and the fact that we know it takes the life force of a monarch to do so it makes more sense.

Awesome video, geez he's old, dident either think he had that nice round number of 2000 but to think he is a milenia more, what effects would living so long have on the human mind? I havent really played all Final Fantasy games but Ardyn have have growned on me and i starting to think he is my favorite character in all of the Final Fantasy Franchine

i kinda see alot of similarities with the Occuria, as a rebellion lead to a great conflict and with Solheim being the dominant civilization during the M.E. age.

I figured it meant "Ancient Era" and "Modern Era." Kind of like how we use "Before Common Era" and "Common Era." It would also make sense as to why no dates are listed for A.E., since the ancients would have had their own calendar that wouldn't fit within the calendar adopted by the four ruling nations. Thus, anything before M.A. would be considered ancient, and anything after would have a regular date.

LASHINGS UK well we don't have a month or day for her actual birthdate. She's four years older than Noctis, that is official . So she was 24 at the time of her death.

Shannon Beech I still don't think that was the end of her - When Aeris was stabbed that was it, she died. Luna was on screen, crawling/moving fighting to survive, even summoning Apocalypsis Noctis or whatever they wanna call Keanu flying hero mode he was in while ending Leviathan. Still don't get how Gladio can blame what happened to Ignis on Noctis, when Luna did that. Guess we'll find out

LASHINGS UK unfortunately she did die. If you remember to the train mission right after we leave Altissa you hear passengers talking about how they haven't found Luna's body. That's because Ardyn took it. Also Luna herself confirmed that she died in her last vision with Noctis under the water. She tells him she can no longer be with him.

Who's to say she didn't become a spirit, and we all know how spirits work. They pass in and out of the human world like a revolving door. Noctis also see a vision of Luna on the train.

This is totally left field and speculative but I always figured Ardyn had to be older than a mere 2,000 because Gilgamesh -- who was apparently the first Shield of the King for the Lucis family, and perhaps was even Ardyn's Shield before Ardyn's brother Somnus took over as Founder King -- is named after the mythical Sumerian king who apparently ruled some 2,600 years BC.

Just wanted to point out, the Japanese text used for when Ardyn reveals his true name refers to the name Izunia as a surname, not a forename. This would suggest that Noctis' ancestors were in fact the Izunia's, but it's still all a bit vague.

Hang on, in English Ardyn says his real name is Ardyn Lucis Caelum and that Noctis will never guess who Izunia was. What exactly does he say in the Japanese version?

I played in Japanese. This is the original text.　ああ　イズニアは誰の姓だったか Personally I think Ardyn might have randomly picked a surname from somewhere to hide his identity. Not sure if the surname belonged to the man who banished him.
