I think Ardyn was just the victim. The real villain in this story is the crystal of Eos which refused to accept the Healer even though he made such a huge sacrifice to restore peace to his people. To answer your question, I completely sympathise with Ardyn. He's probably my favourite Final Fantasy character of all time, and I understand his motives. That doesn't necessarily make what he did right, but I get it.. and I can't say that if I were in his situation I would have done any different. Heck.. after ten years of healing in mmos I wanna watch people burn, and Ardyn had MILLENNIA to stew. Thousands of years of pain and loneliness. Yeah, I absolutely feel sorry for him. :(

Maybe Ardyn was supposed to sacrifice himself (like Noctis) to save the world but he chose to find another way, and ended up becoming a daemon himself. He wanted to fight against his fate but the Astrals weren't happy when he became tainted.

Good video, you make a really compelling argument. The one problem I see with this is that we don't know how old the Lucius Caelum family is. We can safely assume that Ardyn was the first King of Lucius and the 'Chosen' from the info we have been given; but, that doesn't necessarily mean he was the first Lucius Caelum. His family could have been a noble one back during the days of Solheim so he could have been Lucius Caelum whatever number. Of course there is no way of knowing any of that so your theory/calculations are the most practical and reasonable to go by for now

Just 1 thing i want to add... you said none of the kings look young but thats a moot point since we are directly told the strain of the power ages and kills prematurely. also with that being the case seeing as Regis looked about 50 if he really was 50 it would mean he wasnt particarly aged by using the power despite using it consistantly from the point he erected the new wall. the biggest issues therefore are the inconsistances with certain parts which i think you have probably realized thats why its so hard to make concrete conclusions. on a final note.. there were 3 walls which were the city wall which surrounds the city, the old wall which are the guardians Nyx uses and the new wall which was the protective shield

A lot of unnecessary thought went into this. A really simple one: each of the 113 monarchs of Lucis ruled for 17.69 years each on average. You assumed that as soon as each monarch sired an heir they would die and pass on their rule of Lucis to the baby. That doesn't seem like a long time to rule but when to take into account the number of monarchs that would have used the ring and the crystal's power to hold a barrier between Lucis, or just Insomnia and other powers that be, and the fact that we know it takes the life force of a monarch to do so it makes more sense.

Well...I have read the ultimania guide book and here is part of the timeline :the star scourge occurred about 2000 years ago and many people died for that,before the slumber astrals gave the ring of lucii and Crystal to the first king and he built the Lucian kingdom,later 12 statues was built which means there had been at least 12 kings,and AFTER THAT a healer appeared and calmed the disease, so it is quite possible that Ardyn was not the first king

Mary and Elizabeth took the throne after their little brother due to the laws of succession stating that the sons would take the throne before any daughters. Question, or better yet, questions; why there are only 13 royal arms? why at the end of the game we see only noctis and 13 other kings (14 overall), what about the other 100 kings who came before? (99 if Ardyn was the 1st...) why didn't we see in the "beyond" more kings attacking Ardyn?? where are the other 100 Royal arms? or did the royal arms started only with the 100th king? therefore there are only 13 royal arms in noctis's time since he is the 114th...? BTW, I thought about the age of Ardyn in the following way: there are usually 4 generations in a 100 years... so or so. if noctis is the 114th in his bloodline, and Ardyin is the 1st ,or the one who betrayed him was the 1st.... that makes Ardyn 2000+ years old for sure but to be more accurate: 2,736 if a generation comes every 25 years, but let's just say around 2,500 years average overall...so or so.

Just a thought though, it would be 'somewhat' believable to have 113 Kings of Lucis within those 2,000 years (not saying I'm with the wiki on Ardyn being 2,000 years old, just thinking of some justifiable reasons, or theorizing as you would call it :P) IF some of the Kings died during the war/any war (either physical death or from the Ring of Lucii-overuse/desperate acts/etc.). For all we know, there could have been brothers that took over or there could have been really young heirs (whose fathers died during battle and such). But despite this theory, 2000 years for 113 Monarchs does seem far fetch to me. And your theory did suggest that Ardyn would be 3,118 years old if the Lucis line went swimmingly well lol. I'd definitely say he is in the 3,000 years range. Other than that, keep up the good work Pez!

I have my own theory about Ardyn Izunia: He's not the first King or even a legitimate heir. He's a bastard. Let's look at his abilities. He has the powers of both an Oracle and the Kings. Both of those abilities are apparently at least somewhat hereditary, and both lines (the Oracles and the true Kings) have remained distinct, despite their shared history. Now, my theory is that Ardyn is an illegitimate child or the child of a the younger siblings of the heirs to the positions of Oracle and King. As Oracles were very popular among the people, if Ardyn possesed both the power of the Kings and the power to heal, he would have been a massive threat to the heir to the throne, which would explain why he was targeted. I also think Izunia was perhaps his mother's name, because bastards are sometimes named after their mothers when they can't use their father's name. It also fits with the theme of the Oracles, because the iizunia weasel, which the name is based on, is pure white. The Nox Floret family all had a very strong “white” theme going on, especially Lunafreya, the Oracle. It also makes sense to a degree why he forced the marriage between Noctis and Lunafreya: It was the same union between the two lines that produced him (or he loved one of the Nox Floret line but lost her and wanted Noctis to suffer the same fate). Noctis referring to him as a jester in the confrontation in the throne room may also unwittingly allude to his illegitimate status. (A “fake” king, and bastards sometimes ended up staying in the royal court in positions of servitude) It also explains his hatred for the “true” line of Royal blood. I would also argue that Ardyn may have not been evil. Insomnia, and the other lands, were essentially trapped in an endless cycle. Noctis was the 114th king, and the Nox Florets were still the oracles. In a way, they were trapped in their roles, as was the rest of the land. What Ardyn did (building the magitek army, killing Lunafreya, etc) was, in a way, an extremely ruthless way of breaking that cycle. He takes everything from Noctis, who otherwise might have hesitated to sacrifice his life to destroy Ardyn, in order to force Noctis into a single course of action: Destroying Ardyn. Ardyn effectively destroys the daemon blight on the land, but he does something even more significant: He destroys the system that allowed it to happen. He gets not only the Iffrit, who started the plague, but as many astral gods as he can killed. These astral beings were the only ones able to release another scourge on the land,and by destroying them, he also destroyed the possibility of this ever happening again. The Starscourge is destroyed, and with it the crystal and the Lines of the Kings and the Oracles, who have no purpose now the scourge is gone, as well destroying the astral gods. The entire system is wiped away, Noctis and Lunafreya are freed from their roles in death, and the land is freed from the scourge and the rule of those chosen by the crystal. Insomnia sleeps at last, and the land is allowed to “dream” or “wake up” to something beyond what is was before.

I think based on Nyx/Libertus and pictures of Galahd being quite foresty. I would say its not far from Tenebrae. Or even a sub nation of Tenebrae. Makes sense for it to be positioned between Niflheim and Tenebrae as thats how it would have got swept up in the Nif's conquest when it did.

This is totally left field and speculative but I always figured Ardyn had to be older than a mere 2,000 because Gilgamesh -- who was apparently the first Shield of the King for the Lucis family, and perhaps was even Ardyn's Shield before Ardyn's brother Somnus took over as Founder King -- is named after the mythical Sumerian king who apparently ruled some 2,600 years BC.

The problem with this theory is that the dob and age of the heir is irrelevant-its how long a monarch reigned. If we go with an average of 50? (Lucis would still be alive and have reigned for several years after if he hadnt been assassinated or forced to hold up the wall during an invasion) give or take since ages of peace would see long reigns while wars would shorten the reign probably that makes him about.... *5600 YEARS OLD* Id think that is a more likely number cuz 2-3000 would just make him pissed and only a little crazy. On the average ages, isn't it possible that there were many generations where there were at least 2 sons. First born becomes king, dies soon after, then second born becomes king quickly after his brother died?? Things could happen many many times in 2000 years!

well we wouldn't be able to comprehend that long. Especially because , that most likely he wasn't in a right mindset when he was betrayed , making him even more irrational after thinking it over for that long. People who live to old age feel like they just want to end it because their tired and their a fraction of Ardyn's age. So it gives me context to Ardyn for living that long. I would be impressed by his hatred and will to be able to function after that time and not be overly bat shit insane , like a generic "CRAZY" person.

You missed something with your reasoning. Kings and Queens of Lucis, the ring users, they all die pretty early on in life because of the ring. That would bring the *average* age when they reproduce lower, and possibly closer to that ~17 year old range.

Love your videos :D I'm hooked! But I wanna throw a thought out there regarding the 2000 years number and that is we know how much Square loves their allusions. So consider that - 2000 years approx is the give or take dates for the Life of Christ and the founding of the faith pon his sacrifice as a messiah figure. So looking at Adryn as a fallen messiah figure this begins to line up a certain type of mythology. Ardyn's is an 'Anti-Christ'. He's fallen, failed, rejected in contrast to to Noctis true messiah esque role. (self sacrificed himself to save everyone/redeem those enslaved to darkness. Plus Noctis is referred to often as the King of of Kings and the Latter Day King.) Also we have that concept art of Ardyn riding in the city on the Chocobo was is meant to evoke the Triumphant Entry of Christ ala the Palm Sunday tradition and if I'm mistaken there is one other piece of concept art meant to evoke a Christ like figure. That taken into account the number of 2000 isn't arbitrary because it's often dates things back to that 'era' of time from the modern age and with Eos being so influenced by a form of 'reality' ..that kinda lines up and we all know how much JRPG's love using Christian theology for their entertainment and storytelling. :D So just a thought that the 2000 figure isn't random per se although the numbers are odd in consideration of what isn't said. Is there a gap of time between the gifting of the crystals and all four nations being founded and the change over of the four nations to one calendar (four nations..I see you Type 0) and the thought that Ardyn may not have been the first king to begin with. Was he active before te crystal was given? the timeline throws a few wrenches into things as usually happens (Looking at yoU Ivalice 'timeline'..) Just another thought for theory crafting. :D

Wait... 2000 years, ruled by 113 Kings. 2000/113 = 18 or something like that. That doesnt mean each king had their first heir at 18yo.... It just means that each one of them ruled the kingdom for 18 years (with the hypothesis that they All stayed on the throne for the same amount of time)

His physique reminds me of Auron's, so I think Ardyn was in his thirties when he became immortal. He must be about 35 years old. Indeed, I notice that all the men at SE are no more than 32 to 40 years old: Auron, Cid, Basch etc... They have the same type of face, wrinkles begin to form on the corners of their mouth, under their eyes etc... That's why I think Ardyn is 2035 years old.

And that's just interest on the account really. Getting an Archchanencellor's paycheck would boost it up more. Plus I imagine with the not dying thing, he'd save a bunch on healing items (and I estimate he could probably make those himself). If he induldged in the occasional pleasure, it might dip in to the account, but I think even buying his rather spiffy car, it wouldn't be all that much. So if he did have a 3 millenia plus old bank account, it would be chock full of gil (I can only imagine the financial ruin of the Eos banks if someone took that money out).

I figured it meant "Ancient Era" and "Modern Era." Kind of like how we use "Before Common Era" and "Common Era." It would also make sense as to why no dates are listed for A.E., since the ancients would have had their own calendar that wouldn't fit within the calendar adopted by the four ruling nations. Thus, anything before M.A. would be considered ancient, and anything after would have a regular date.
