1:00 GG, responds with a "musical" 8 finger tapping version of what Joe did... Without even looking at the fretboard. Plays it in two separate phrases, the notes within, and ending note of each phrase makes perfect sense. Bryan smiling at MK as if to say "just toooo good!"

couple of guys saying they are following the 4/4 beat.. But I think Vai should have respected Guthrie's flow.. some might argue Vai sneaks in to keep the transition smooth.. But i mean come on its Guthrie that we are talking about here..that man surely knows when to pass on the riff even when he is asleep..Guthrie is genuinely humble in his playing so I think he knows when enough is enough.. Vai as a musician to the other should have the feel for music of his co-virtuoso the beat can follow through on that..

@@morten1 really? i actually think he has a very distinct style. he plays in often unpredictable patterns full of wacky slides and insane bends while closely following the key notes of every chord in the background, also throwing some chromatic notes for flavor. as an example, when listening to "have a blast" by periphery, you can tell PRECISELY when guthrie starts soloing because of this unique kind of playing.

Vai looks and plays like a Las Vegas magician...the David Copperfield of guitar, demonstrating tricks that amaze the audience yet tricks nevertheless. Guthrie looks and plays like an actual ancient wizard who was created to play the electric guitar by an order of Magi amidst the boulders of Stonehenge.

Guthrie sites Vai as is biggest influence. And he actually celebrates the exact thing your criticizing Vai for. Guthrie has said in interviews that he likes guitarists who aren’t trying to impress but to entertain, and that’s a big part of Steve’s style. Be that as it may, it’s not just tricks. A lot of what he does is very difficult to do especially if you’re trying to improvise over chords. Easy to criticize someone for the way they overuse certain techniques, when one tries to implement that into one’s own playing it becomes apparent how much talent it takes to pull off said tricks.

@Dr Diablory This also is not Vai’s most inspired playing. He plays way better by himself. I’ve never thought of Vai as “boxy” at all, he’s actually one of the top players I’d describe as having a very loose and free approach, but I agree Guthrie is amazing at doing that.

They are all individuals, I think it misses the point to rank one above the other. Having taken that position, Joe is such a melodist, along with all his other virtues, and it doesn't even occur to him that there is a "competition" in that sense, he's too pure and secure for that type of thinking / playing. I love all three of them, each is a blessing from the Ultimate Guitarist.

Vai and Govan are great players but musically speaking Satriani is (and has) always something more, something better... He's not just a technical virtuoso. He's pure magic with his tone and feel. That's why he always leads in the stage and it's always the other guys who follow his riffs. His musical aura is just all over the place... Overall he's the best electric guitarist and composer of all time IMO, there are plenty of reasons for that.

I dont know what all the hate is about. Everyone is playing great and all their styles are showing how great their musical mastery is. And if some simpleton really wants to see who is the best then just see what their sales have been per year, over the years. Talent, is something that captivates people and inspires them, doesn’t matter or “feely” your playing is or “fast you can shred”

For anyone really claiming Vai isn't coming in early over Guthrie, which at points is a bit ambiguous, 1:29 is a particularly egregious example.

I guess the people that were complaining about Vai and Satriani being afraid of doing a G3 with Guthrie are the ones now saying that Guthrie is on a different level than these guys. Well, in my opinion (please note I'm not a music critic, nor a reference for anything, just another person on youtube), Satriani and Vai earned their right to be on any music stage and have earned the respect way before anyone else, particularly Satriani. Without Satriani there won't be a Guthrie, he was the blue print that many followed. Whether you like his style of not, you have to respect that. On a side note, Guthrie is amazingly proficient technically, but doesn't have a voice of his own, if you were given this audio without the video, I'm pretty sure you would recognize Satriani and Vai's playing, but Guthries you might not.

It could be my friend, I think he has inspired many kids to pick up a guitar and play which is a rarity nowadays, so his contribution is immense in that sense. Fortunately KZbin showed us how good he is, he should have been there with all the 80's shredders, but for some reason he wasn't. I still believe he doesn't sound unique, but that's again my opinion, glad you can hear the difference. Take care.

i would recognize gg's playing on a first note. it's not a problem of spotlight or else. Yes, maybe you are right that satch and vai have the blue print or whatever you called it. But that doesn't mean that you can be disrespectful to guthrie. So if Hendrix still alive, i can say the same to satch and vai? because hendrix was playing before them, and he had the master of the blueprint that many followed?

About the Steve cutting off Guthrie comments... I have to admit, it sure as hell sounded that way to me too. Then I restarted the video and started to count beats. My conclusion is, and anyone else's would be too if they carefully listen and count, that Guthrie comes in a bit late and everyone plays over the equal number of bars - 2 bars or 4/4. Steve does not come in on Guthrie's designated place. They start to play one bar at around 2:53 mark. Other than that you could say Steve cut off Guthrie only once (I think around 1:30 - don't wanna rewind again). But the rest of the time Vai was coming in on exactly where he was supposed to and it sounded off only because Guthrie came in a little late, not starting on one. As for people saying Vai is not as good as Guthrie, you can fuck off. Vai play over a rock structure, rhythmically - all 4/4 stuff., because I wold presume that is the reflection of his time. I personally prefer a more jazzier rhythmic foundation. So, from that perspective you could say I like Guthrie more. But if you don't hear the brilliance in Steve's notes and composition and playing, you are deaf or don't understand music.

Anton Barkland fair point. but I'd rather have Guthrie's complete control of the instrument and be able to play anything that comes to mind in any style as opposed to joe and steves popularity. guthrie isn't as popular because he hasn't been around as long and his music isn't as radio friendly and can be very dissonant in the jazz fusion genre.
