Final Lair - Grodin, Udine, Jacoby

Uploaded by request - this used to be on KZbin but the uploader seems to have disappeared, so I am re-uploading so everyone can relive this performance. This is the 'Final Lair' from the restaged tour of The Phantom of the Opera, performed by Cooper Grodin, Julia Udine, and Ben Jacoby, from February 2014.

theres just a lot that i dont get about this production. some of the changes are interesting but others are just confusing

You know, the guy who’s playing Raoul in this performance actually also played the Phantom himself before as well. I think Grodin played Raoul first and then Phantom.

I'm not sure who you're talking about, but Ben Jacoby is playing Raoul and he did not play the Phantom, though his FATHER, Mark Jacoby, did play the Phantom. Cooper Grodin is playing the Phantom, but he has not played Raoul as far as I know; he only understudied the Phantom before being promoted to principal.

Anyone notice that Raoul's line "do what you want only free her" got changed to "do what you want with me, free her" i think thats a great change

I think it's just that this phantom is a lot more menacing. It's weird but then again the phantom is a stalker

The 25th Anniversary is my top favorite version of poto, and that is largely based off of The Final Lair. But after watching this, I finally have a strong contender. I absolutely LOVE this staging of this scene, and Grodin handled it wonderfully. He is the only other Phantom besides Ramin Karimloo that made me cry during this scene. Christine crumpling his music notes was a wonderful effect, and watching the phantom trying to smooth out the wrinkled pages broke my heart. I'm usually not a fan of the versions where Christine doesn't hand him the ring back, but in this version, I wouldn't have wished it any other way. And when the phantom collapsed after Christine kissed him... beautiful. The way he wouldn't hug her back because he was afraid to touch her. I loved this from start to finish.

Yes, he shot the lasso. Incredible aim and being incredibly extra are just some of the many skills the Phantom possesses!

One of the few things this restaging does very well is create an effectively ugly phantom, a lot of productions leave a lot of original facial shape and not much distortion. i also feel that the “more” hair on this phantom is better, as near baldness is in style for some reason

That is intentional. They did this in all of the shows (at least the ones with this staging that I have seen), specifically because of Love Never Dies 🙂
