EDIT: About the Mysidian legend: The Legend is NOT about Cecil, but about the Big Whale. If you zoom out of the Mysidian continent, you will see that it is shaped like a dragon. It is the Big Whale that is "born from a dragon", hoisting Cecil (the light and the dark), arising "high up in the sky to the still land" ("the people of the earth were still in the process of evolution. Thus they created another moon and kept sleeping", as FuSoYa told Cecil when you first meet him. So their land is in complete stillness). FYI, there is also a hidden stash of gold in the stairs leading to the crystal room on the first floor of the Lunar's Lair. You can easily wipe any enemy formation that include a Grenade by casting Lit-1 on one of them. They will counter with Reaction, blowing up all the enemy party.

I remember calling Squaresofts 900number help line back in the day and that’s how I learned this ever existed. If I recall, the recording told me there is a 1/64 chance of finding pink puffs and then there is a 1/64 chance of finding the pink tail. Insane! In the Japanese version you can find an item called “alarm,” in which you can summon a battle. You have a much higher chance of finding the puffs with this item, but not the tail
@qactustick

Assuming there are pink puffs on your screen, you have a 1/1280 chance of getting it. I've never gotten it would some sort of cheating device.
@neutraltral8757

Since the Pink Puffs call out "Let's Dance!", it would have been neat if they had tied in some kind of secret related to all of the dancers found throughout the game. For example, if you visited every dancer, you'd have an easier time getting the Pink Tail (similar to visiting all of the pianos in Final Fantasy V). Alternatively, maybe if you did the Row command a few times (the closest thing your party can probably do to dancing in combat), you'd have an easier time getting the tail. It's tempting to try and start a rumor that some secret get-the-pink-tail-more-easily hack like that exists, but given how long this game has been out and people have reverse engineered it to the point where it can be patched in various ways, I'm guessing someone would have discovered such a secret if it actually existed. :)

@@neutraltral8757 back in the day without guides or internet I can’t imagine anyone getting lucky enough to actually find this battle for such rumors to ever start formulating around the lunch table. @neutraltral8757

@@zalden2565 True. They probably didn't really expect anyone to find it. On the other hand, they made the Gentlemen's Club in Toroia and even the I-read-it-for-the-articles magazine in the Japanese version much more accessible. I wonder what that means? 🤔

This is my most favorite FF of all time. Long long long ago, I grinded out to max level 99 on all characters in the crystal rooms fighting the dragons, evil masks, and behemoths and the only item I ever got was the dragon spear for Kain. Never got the glass mask or the crystal ring. It took me a total of 72 hours to fully level up and max all characters. I still have that save on my SNES cart to this day. I love this game so much that I thought I knew everything about it. I've learned A LOT of quirks and new things over the years but the one thing that I didn't know about...was the monsters next to the HP refill tile at the start of the moon castle. I was blown away! I didn't know that! And I knew about many other things not mentioned. Example, you can access ALL japan only items through a game genie. They're all named "Dummy" but they still exist in the game. And all the battle items still do exactly what they're programmed to do. But again, they're named "Dummy" and can't be accessed without a game genie.

I just realized what is special about these games, what puts them above the rest. There is such a ridiculously large amount of monster variety, and the design of each one is immaculate. Like how amazingly beautiful and cool is the pixel art on all of the mons. Each level has several completely new one, not overly relying on reskins. I just tried to play sea of stars and got stuck on this large are where there is only one enemy type and the enemy designs are all uninspiring. It makes me not want to play. But in final fantasy games you want to play just to see what you’ll find next.

My first RPG was the original FF on the NES. Sadly, I hadn't discovered "grinding" yet, so I was stonewalled at the Marsh Cave. FF "4" was a game I rented, but I couldn't get past the Lodestone Cave. Going in with weak, non-metal gear didn't occur to me until much later. The Dark Elf was truly my Arch-Enemy back then. It wasn't until FF "6" that I completed a game in this franchise during the era of its release.

@UCanBeatVideoGames - To reecho the sentiments of many of the other commentators here, thank you sincerely for all of the hard work put into this series. FFIV isn't flawless, but it is still my pick for favorite RPG of the ones I've played so far. I was pumped to see that you were covering it. Even though I can no longer be surprised by the plot development, I still find the story to be very meaningful and moving (and quite often amusing). The characters with their diverse personalities are endearing. Even though other games from the genre offered more flexibility, I like the balance they struck between the static job classes of the characters and the rotation of characters in and out of the party. Once again, thanks for all of the work, all of the thorough, well-presented information, and the entertaining commentary. Now... having counted at least a half-dozen Star Wars references during this series, I'm going to go rewatch some of the game coverage you did from that franchise to compare how many Final Fantasy references you made. 😆 P.S. When I went to fill in some tax forms a few weeks ago, the very first page of the system had the heading, "Let's get started!" I couldn't help but hear your catchphrase as I read it. Also coincidental, the commercial that played for me at the end of this video was for the upcoming movie "IF", and it starts with the line, "What if I told you..." Too bad the odds of dropping a pink tail aren't as high as the odds of that happening. 😅

Thanks a lot, and to your wife as well for all those really cool enemy stat cards. I really enjoyed this video, and it was a fun trip down memory lane for one of my favorite games. I had beaten the original Final Fantasy and however many Dragon Warrior games were out in the U.S. by then, but FF2(4) was by far better than any other RPG I had played so far. The scene where Tellah died was the first time I cried while playing a video game. This is really the game that kickstarted my lifelong love for the Final Fantasy series. At one point, I decided to try to level every character up to level 99. Unfortunately, due to some problems with the battery backup on the physical cartridge, after a few years my game would periodically erase all of its saved data. I managed to get Dark Knight Cecil to Lv. 99 with many, many hours of grinding on the Peninsula of Power. I tried with Edward, but I lost my save data twice, both times when he was around level 60. I managed to get Meteo for Rydia when she was still a child. It was pretty funny to have her casually cast Meteo, and then later having it be a critical plot point for Tellah. One of my fan theories is that the developers originally planned to have Edward, Yang, Cid, Palom, and Porom all be playable characters at the end, so that you could swap them out like in FF6. Why else would they all make miraculous recoveries at the Giant of Bab-il? Why would Palom and Porom be able to learn all spells? Why would Edward's stats skyrocket after level 70? I'd be curious if anyone can confirm this. It is also my suspicion that the original FF4, which was supposed to be for the Famicom, was not really cancelled but rather upgraded to Super Famicom and became the game we know as FF5; hence FF5 feels more like FF3 than like FF4.

I don’t know if it’s something used for a certain version of the game, but a strat I’ve seen speed runners use in Final Fantasy IV: Free Enterprise (the randomizer version of this game) for the Plague fight is to berserk their melee fighters. I think it’s a glitch that essentially makes it to where the berserked players will always get a turn before the death counter reaches zero.

Just discovered your channel. The amount of work you put into these videos is insane. Also, don't take it the wrong way, but I've found your videos pull double duty/ If I am having a hard time falling asleep, I put one on. Maybe the nostalgia relaxes me?

"We were heading towards the robot's crotch so ask yourself what this missile shaped room might be." "As you can see, the robot remains erect, so if we want to take it down, we need to delve deeper." I died and never noticed this. I've beaten the game so many times, too.

Masamune, like many Japanese words is best pronounced by breaking it up into syllables per vowel, so Ma-sa-mu-ne. The sword is named after a famed blacksmith from the 13-14th century. I love your videos and I know it can be difficult to know that this is even a historical Japanese name being used for a sword, but it is a name that gets used in a lot of fiction and games for swords and characters so I hope that this can help you in the future

When I was a kid, I briefly played Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy 1, but I didn't progress very far in those games. It wasn't because of their high difficulty, rather, it was because they never gave me a reason to care. Final Fantasy 2(4), on the other hand, was the first RPG I ever played that had memorable characters and a good story. It has its flaws, but it will always be a special game for me because it was the first RPG that made me care. Thank you very much for making these videos! Major props to your wife for making those "monster-dex" entries!

At 22:16 , Rydia's magic is at 210mp, and at 22:53 it's at 185mp. I asked around about the glitch, and it turns out that in the US release of the game, the Sylph cost is free whenever Rydia isn't in the middle party slot. It was free when the glitch was originally pointed out because she was in the 2nd slot from the top, rather than the middle. Very weird stuff. Thanks to the Final Fantasy: Free Enterprise community for helping me understand this (Wylem specifically looked into the code). Also really interesting how these ideas of how to do the glitch got around. I used to hear that you needed a specific party formation at end-game to get the glitch to work before learning how it really works.

You are awesome at explaining the tech behind stuff, however, I'm adding an input that might be useful. In Hard Mode and the later variants, there's an item that can be dropped by most enemies as an incredibly rare drop, in the PS1 and GBA versions, it's called "Golden Apple" and it allows you to increase the Max HP of a character, all the way up until 9999, that was most likely intended for the Bomb summon and might be why it's based upon HP, as that would make sense for an intended method. Just a tidbit I figured I'd add after I got to the Bomb summon section, keep it up, I love watching these. 😁
