Hello I am the game dev who made 2 of the games for Thumby Color. My games are ""Bust-A-Thumb" and "Song of Morus". Both are shown in the video. Thanks for playing my game. IMO, the whole point of Thumby Color is that there is a whole hobbyist community developing new games for it, and you can make your own game too. The process power is fine, but the resolution and physcial size is extremely tiny. That's why designing a game for such device is so challenging but also fun.

@anthonyorf8827Ай бұрын
I think an important thing that wasn't stressed in this video is that the thumby color is the only programmable gaming device at this size, anything else would be too big to fit on a keychain and take with you everywhere and if you are into coding, this thing runs on python which is one of the easiest languages to pick up. It's meant to be a learning device just as much as it is a novelty and also a great conversation starter
@RojoSostenidoАй бұрын
but can you actually have a gaming session here or is it really more of a gimmick thing?
@anthonyorf8827Ай бұрын
@ I'd say it's definitely meant for shorter sessions like a quick game while waiting in line somewhere or as a conversation starter in public, point is if it's on ur keychain, it will likely always be on u so u can pull it out at any time, if I wanted a "gaming session" I'd just hop on my PC at home. Plus for the developers, it's very satisfying to see something u created work on something like this. I've got the original thumby on my keychain and I didn't play it much just bc it was so difficult to play and that thing really was just a novelty, so this product is just an upgrade to that with a larger color display and bigger more spread out buttons that are easier to press, mean for those ppl who loved the thumby and actually wanted to be able to use it

Well one thing he didn't really mention in the video is that the main purpose of this thing is that anyone can program it themselves, the games run on micropython and you can make your own game and load it up and play it or share it to the arcade, the thing is supposed to be a learning device and the original thumby is what got me into coding to begin with, that one was about $25 and this one is just a more usable upgrade to that. On top of the fact that it's the most powerful hand held that is this small so u can actually play better games off your keychain, that can't really be done with many other products

@@AnonymousAnarchist2but even then the major demographic that would go for something like that isn't going to want to pay that much. I would agree with Linus around $20, but with the option to be able to add games from other people's work i would say around $20-$35 maybe even $40 ( to round out to an even number) could be acceptable. At the price point of $50 all you are really going to attract is either the family member who is buying a gift they don't know what would make a good gift, so this is the safe option lol. An enthusiasts who might want to try and use whatever tools they make to allow games to be made / and published on this. That one person who's journey it is to run doom on everything which i guess kinda ties back to the enthusiasts. Finally the one person who finds it sitting randomly in a thrift store or on clearance etc. Hard for me to imagine, but at the same time i know I am definitely not the demographic for this product, so I may be wrong lol. Just hard to imagine someone deciding to whip out their keys to play a game on a tiny screen when they more then likely also have their phone on them lol.

this is essentially the size of an esp32 supermini. there are also pi pico superminis based on the first pi pico processor with the same footprint. so i dont think its far fetched that you can cram the next pi pico on a board this size. it would probably been better if it had been based off of an esp32 as this would give it wireless and thus some "hacking" capabilities

@thomascriviera5779Ай бұрын
I totally agree with what Linus said about the price. 15 to 20 bucks is what we would want to pay for it. And yet with all that is in there, warehousing and other company related costs and, we shouldn't deny it, a bit of profit so the company can reinvest, expand etc, 50 bucks isn't unreasonable. Then again we should hope for economy of scale to drive the price down to the 30's. But my gut feeling tells me, this is such a nice product, however much we might like it, it will be difficult to sell it by the (tens of) thousands. And lets not forget that often if an influencer has got their hands on it, demand for that product picks up dramatically, and that will also increase the price because A, more profit, and B people will buy it then anyway. For example one AliExpress 1/43 4wd drift car used to cost 25 euro's. And after a couple rc youtubers featured it, it was always sold out and cost upwards of 10 to 15 bucks more (depending on the week/month you take a look at the product page.)

It's a mix of that and also that it's a pretty useful tool to learn programming in a fun way. It's limitations are quite useful in this regard because they make you stay on target, it uses python which is nice and easy to learn, and it's small enough that you don't need a ton of space or strong computer to make what you want. And once you're done playing or learning with it you can always just put it on your keychain and have a tiny emergency gaming console wherever you go, that also looks neat as hell.
