According to the rules of basketball: A player may not assist himself in an attempt to score by using any part of the rim, net, backboard or basket support to lift, hold or raise himself. A player may not assist a teammate to gain height while attempting to score. PENALTY: Loss of ball.

I read this as: a player may use another player to raise themselves provided the other player is taken completely by surprise and is not intentionally "assisting" in the process. Therefore, a player may jump onto and off of a teammate Mario-style in order to score.

The Dutch flag originally *did* have orange instead of red; but with the dyes they had way back then, the orange on the flag would fairly quickly fade into a slightly orangish red. So they changed the flag to just a slightly orangish red instead. But Orange is still the national color of the Netherlands.

Just a slight correction there: the Netherlands used to have two national flags, one orange white red called "de prinsenvlag" (princes flag) and one red white blue called "de statenvlag" (states flag), both were used interchangeable. The prinsenvlag was flown by those who supported the monarchy and the statenvlag was flown by those who supported the republic. Dutch governmental buildings always used the statenvlag. Eventually queen Wilhelmina signed an order to make the statenvlag the only official and recognised flag in 1937 because the Dutch national socialist party (NSB) used the prinsenvlag.

Isn't this also in part because the colour orange, as a word, as we know it wasn't invented until later in the medieval era? It's the reason why things like red Robin/roodborstje are called red even though they are orange. Red and orange have been interchangeable colours through most of history, orange just being a shade of 'faded' red

Skeet shooting used to be mixed in the Olympics. Then a woman named Zhang Shan won it in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. After her win the International Shooting Union barred female athletes from competing against male athletes. The following Olympics split male and female skeet shooting, but there weren't enough women, so they didn't have any female skeet shooting, so Zhang Khan, the former Olympic champion, wasn't able to compete at all in 1996. The subsequent 2000 Olympics did see the women's skeet shooting.

@@sanguillotine Yep, sounds to me like some dudes got pissy that a woman beat them so they banned them altogether. Then they so generously allowed women back in but as a separate event likely knowing full well that there wouldn't be enough competitors. Some gendered stuff in sports and the olympics has some reasonable arguments behind it (producing lots of testosterone is a real advantage in strength based events etc.) but this is one of the ones where there's really nothing behind it but dudes being dickheads

@4F0xSake
@4F0xSake Жыл бұрын
Basically yes it's sexism from what I've seen. Loads of examples like the 1921 FA ban on Women's football which lasted over 50 years. However there are some examples where splitting by gender is a bit complex and is tried to be used positively. When women were first allowed to compete in Chess it was mixed (why should it matter), but eventually FIDE let people set up women's only tournaments to boost participation and create a smoother curve. This is due to historic (and very much current) sexism making it harder for women to participate or not feeling welcome/safe when they do thus making it harder for them to improve or gain ranking. That said, this is still different from the Olympic shooting example where women can't participate against men, even when like in the example above, they are not only better but the best.

Funnily enough there's a real world example of how wrong Lewis is about basketball. The Washington Bullets, now the Wizards, had the tallest and shortest players in NBA history. The tallest being Manute Bol at 7'7" (2.31m) and the shortest being Muggsy Bogues at 5'3" (1.60m). Muggsy Bogues averaged 3 times as many points per game as Manute Bol throughout their careers and scored nearly 5 times as many points as Bol.

@@ethan-loves yea, height obviously gives one a huge advantage in basketball, though historically in the NBA there is such a thing as too tall, as the really tall players usually struggle with strength and speed, with some outliers of course, Shaq, Yao Ming. Shaq is a good example of someone using their overwhelming size to dominate basketball, but also, he only ever scored a SINGLE 3 pointer in his entire career. Also, Shooting USED to be a mixed sport in the Olympics, but then women started winning so they split it.

The Dutch might be known for the color orange because of the flowers they are famous for? Tulips and the sort have some of the most vibrant oranges and are quite lovely. Fun history fact, The Netherlands still sends a ton of flowers annually to Canada (Canadian Tulip Festival) as a thank you for allowing members of its Royal family (including its two princesses) to live in Canada during its occupation during WW2. This is mainly to avoid the Blitz and any dangers of bombings, the same offer Queen Elisabeth and her siblings turned down as they wanted to remain in The UK and began running radio broadcasts to boost the moral of the troops. Canada grew closer to the Netherlands because of this and eventually rushed to liberate the Netherlands in an act of solidarity In the closing days of the War. This was around the final days of WW2 when the western allies were racing to hold more of the captured territories then the Russians, We technically broke agreements and captured territories Russian had claim over to assure the Netherlands autonomy after the war.

Some of the sports that didn't have any rules for women competing (back in the day) actually added them after women figured out they could compete with men, and actually get close to winning. Generally in athletic sports it pays to be on the taller side because of the advantage you have in stride length and reach but for strength based sports such as power lifting it can be advantageous to be shorter (higher density of muscle in the same weight class). Football (soccer) has a split where it helps to be tall for the defensive positions, goalkeepers in particular, but a lot of the world's best attacking players are on the shorter side. Motor racing drivers and jockeys are generally small, if you're much over 6ft you'll struggle.

I think Lewis has a point. Instead of dividing sports by gender, it should be divided by other relevant metrics specific to that sport. Height, weight, stride length, etc. because, like, though testosterone provides a natural "unfair advantage" in muscle growth, there is still much overlap there. Like, if I found the biggest, tallest and most muscular woman then she could probably easily smack down a small, skinny Lebanese child like Lewis, no problem. I got picked up and thrown on the ground by a big butch lesbian once, while playing a game of pool. There is overlap in strength and ability, I've seen it first hand. So I agree that the divisions should be decided by relevant metrics. Kind of like with boxing, where they have weight classes. You stand on the scales, and your overall mass puts you into a class: heavyweight, welterweight, featherweight, etc. and that system works to generally avoid having massive brutes annihilating smaller athletic dudes. They're both men in that case, but there's a clear thing that you can't, in boxing, just pit any man against any other man. Thus, the idea is that there's no more gender division. Solely sports-specific divisions, tailored to, you know, whatever's relevant to that sport - which might be height or weight or muscle mass or whatever. I was in a hospital the other day that took that kind of approach to toilets. Instead of having men's, women's and disabled toilets, there were just 4 or 5 bathrooms (all with disabled facilities) in a row. So that absolutely everyone - male or female, able or disabled - can use them. After all, we don't have separate male and female toilets at home. You have a bathroom and everyone uses it. It's only a slight re-arrangement of the bathroom furniture. Make each stall bigger, so that it can also include its own sink, mirror and hand dryer in the stall. I mean, it's the same amount of bathroom furniture - it's just re-arranged to make each one its own separate bathroom. Have actual walls and proper doors, so they are their own rooms. And the thing is, this is actually more practical. When you have male and female toilets, then you've got to have, say, 3 stalls for the women and 3 stalls for the men. But, in that same space, you could just have 6 unisex bathrooms. This avoids the underlying dumb thing that you could be a man, but all the male stalls are engaged - yet there's 3 empty stalls in the ladies, but you can't use them because you're the wrong gender. Even though, you know, the only real difference between male and female facilities is the men's might include urinals. But, honestly, just use a standard toilet for pissing. You do it at home with no issues, after all. In the combined space that the gentlemen and ladies' toilets take up, you could totally fit 5 or 6 separate bathrooms (with disabled facilities). And then you've just got a load of bathrooms that everyone can use. (And this also, of course, eliminates worry / discussion / debate about transgenderism and whose toilets they should be using. It's just a row of human bathrooms, suitable for all human beings of any gender, age or able-ness. With a table in there, it could also be a baby changing room too, why not? You get the gist. Only divide things where it's relevant to divide things, and a heck of a lot of problems just vanish entirely. What bathroom should a transgender person use? Any of them. They're all good. And the bathrooms are all separate, so no-one else needs to care. Make them all disabled friendly as well - extra space and bars next to the toilet, for those in wheelchairs to be able to shimmy over - then we can just have "universal" toilets for everyone everywhere.)

How many years of GTA before lewis figured out how to pull back on the stick in mid air? And to think we thought all this time it was the car that couldn’t make the jumps..

I kinda get what Lewis was going for, but I still found it funny that he was asking for a competition that isn't dominated by physical attributes while playing a video game.

Shorter folks can compete in national basketball leagues. Just look at guys like Allen Iverson and Muggsy Bogues. Everyone can find something in a sport that they can do. For Muggsy it was snatching dribbles and commanding an offense. For AI it was dazzling handles to through bigger dudes of his trail. AI obviously better then Muggsy not trying to compare their skill level only their size relative to league average. They were both competitors.

Why do they always have an odd number of people in these GTA videos? It just makes these team-based modes unbalanced, hence the existence of The Burger Observer.

They probably don't know in advance what's next in the playlist. If it's races, then it's not a problem. But yeah, it's a mild inconvenience, just like Ped.

The Prince's Flag of the Netherlands has orange instead of red, and is used in a few historical settings. Also, the Dutch are orange in Civ 5, which has probably leaking into Lewis's brain.
