In the books Lydia (and James) is(/are) 18 and Sutton is 23/24 years old. The actor is cute and talented, but when you know that the storyline is gonna be contentious anyway, to then hire an actor who is in his early 30s is a huge mistake imo. I really don’t understand their decision and why they thought this would be okay. Especially knowing where this goes in the other books. Truly baffling! 🤦♀️

ok so for the "how are they speaking german, it's in england?" question : the books are originally german, so the characters in the books speak german -> so do the characters in the show for english speakers this is less "obvious" as in you dont notice it maybe since to be fair many known adaptations come from english books or are just adapted into english from the original language, but the characters are going to speak the language of the writer / that the books are written in for example : en english speaking writer who is writing a book set in a south east asian country, a northern european country, a south american country will still have their characters speaking english because that's the language they write in same here the writer is german, so even if the series is set in england, not far from london and close-ish to oxford, the characters speak english because of the writer 🤍🤍🤍🤍

Hiiii🥰This is my first video of yours that I've watched. I truly enjoyed your reaction and I really appreciated your positive energy, keep up the good work girl!! Thank you so so much for watching it in German, it makes the show much more authentic😊

I think this is a general flaw in the adaptation: the beauforts are constantly in the news because of their fame. More recently because of Lydia who was taken advantage of by an under cover journalist at 15. she constantly looks for love that she doesn’t get at home. So they are very mistrusting of outsiders and their intentions. They put on a huge show to hide their real feelings. The adaptation actually otherwise improves on the books in my opinion. The changes are otherwise small, but have a large impact on the pacing and logic of the series.

Hi Monica, this was the first reaction of yours that I've watched, and I think I'm gonna go check out your other videos😂 Loved your energy in this video! Btw, Gormsey (where Ruby lives) is set in England and the Maxton Hall College, too. That's why every character has an English name, and why they could drive to London☺️ German names are pronounced very differently (e.g. Ruby has a different /r/ sound) and most of the English names in the show don't even exist in German (like James). The series is set in England, because the book series is, too. For some reason, young adult books sell better in Germany if they're set in an English speaking country (like the film 'Ruby Red', if you've seen it. It's a trilogy, was also based on an internationally successful book series from Germany) To stay in Europe, though, many books are set in England. Many German teenagers consider British names and places (or American or Australian and so on) to sound and seem cooler than German ones🤷🏽♀️ So, that's the reson for this😂

Well age of consent in the UK is 16 so that's not the issue. Age of consent is between 14 and 16 most places actually. But it is against the rules (legally enforceable) for a teacher to date a student unless they are at least 18 (again, this is true in most places). And unless you're in college/university it's usually still not allowed (not legally enforceable but can get you fired/looks bad)regardless of age because of the fact that the teacher has implicit power over the student.

21:19 here in Germany the age of consent is 14. and its pretty socially accepted for 15-18 years old girls to be in a relationship with a older boyfriend, which is usually justified in our society though the fact that between male and Female teenager, even when the same age their levels of maturity, intellectual processing and social intelligence is significantly different in comparison. Males usually progressing much slower in to maturity as females (the rule of thumb is here usually that female teens are are maturity wise at least 3 years ahead of their male counterparts, resulting in the fact the majority of female German teenagers between 14 and 19 having a consensual relationship with a several years older male partner sharing a similar level of maturity and intellect. Thats also probably why the German author of the books as well as the German production company didn’t make the age gap between lydia and teacher not into a huge morality judging dilemma like almost every reaction channel (outside of Germany) have done and the actual problem in the show is that he as the teacher is a authority who can easily abuse his position in power over her as his student.

Tl;dr but I really don’t understand how so many viewers seem to miss that at no point does Ruby actually tell him that she’s not going to say anything! I know I’m alone in this, but I dislike it more and more each time I rewatch and it’s actually kinda tainted my view of Ruby in the first couple of episodes because she has a way of lashing out when hurt or angry that proves she really does have a ruthless, slightly cruel streak all of her own. All they had to have her say was: “I don’t want your money: I’m not gonna say anything; it’s none of my business and I want nothing to do with any of it. Stay the hell away from me.” It wouldn’t have affected how the show moved forward because, let’s face it James would probably not have believed her anyway, and it would make her far more sympathetic. Ruby is not stupid, we know she understands the implications of it getting out because of how she turns down Sutton’s recommendation letter, so she absolutely knew what she was doing. This is a guy who was so worried about his sister and potential scandal that within minutes of it happening he’s bribing her to try to keep her silent, but because she was offended, she decides to antagonise him by leaving him hanging? I really don’t get it. Yes, James is an arrogant entitled ass in the beginning but I can totally see why this (and some of Harriet’s acting choices, to play their interactions very smirky and coy) would lead him to believe that this was definitely a game they were BOTH engaged in.
@amlisking82173 ай бұрын
You really have a point here and I didn't think about it before but you're absolutely right! Ruby never tells him in any way that she won't say anything. She just continously tells him to stay away and does it in an antagonizing way because...well he's a jerk. Still, it's clear her anger and pride got the best of here, so much for her making smart choices for her future. Maybe if she had said those words he would have toned down his moves to silence and then discredit her.
