Andy's importance to the band always seemed to be overlooked, but if you watch some of the old videos of their live performances while he was still in the band you really get a sense of the energy he brought to their shows. Rob and John are fantastic musicians, but in those videos Andy is such a charismatic performer. Weird for a guy who avoided the spotlight and I don't think ever used his real name in the album credits

Oh hey, welcome to your post-NoMeansNo life. A very addicting band that is solely responsible for the formation of my current band of 10+ years, and the only band that people from all music backgrounds and levels of fame can agree were formative to their own sounds. Couple of things to note: Andy Kerr @blankfrank07 was their guitarist/vocalist at the time of this album, and was very instrumental in the songwriting for a good chunk of the band's tenure. I believe they did swap instruments to record some parts here and there (or is that just a myth?) but these three worked incredibly close together, which explains the methodical tightness of the music. Rob's bass tone is inspired by Motorhead's Lemmy, from what he says, he basically plugged into a Marshall 3530 head, cranked the mids, and went through a guitar cab at the time. Rob has also described himself as a bass player rather than a bassist (or the other way around I can't remember); as he was more interested in the rhythm of a song instead of solo'ing. These guys were pretty much great players out of the gate, and I would use the word 'escalation' to describe their music. It's like they sat on one riff for hours and hashed out as many phrases as they could before putting something together, which makes the music FUN to listen to. If you are going to check out another of their tracks at some point, I HIGHLY recommend Big Dick from the same album, but really there's naught a terrible choice when it comes to their discography. Good vid, and good analysis of the other instruments changing the feel around the bedrock of Rob's bass - that's basically the theme of NoMeansNo!

i just saw Dead Bob tonight (technically last night), and it was absolutely amazing!!!! One of the best live bands you will ever see out right now. i got to tell John Wright he was one of my favorite ever drummers of all time (and that NMN were one of my favorite ever bands), a ginormous wish i never thought would be fulfilled. He is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. The only time i got to see NMN live was back somewhere between 1993 and 1995, so when i heard Dead Bob were playing relatively close to me, i had to do it. My two favorite NMN songs are 'Now' and 'It's Catching Up' (two great openers), but honestly, their whole catalog is phenomenal. They are one of those bands who have no bad albums. And the masterful jump from the first to second albums... What can you even say to that? Dead Bob/John Wright is keeping on with the tradition of great recordings, for sure.

I'm so glad somebody gives these geniuses some well deserved attention! On the fusion remarks: they also did a Miles Davis cover on their last album, but I can't remember the name now. They grew up on jazz and then discovered the Ramones. From what I recall when I saw them live: Rob Wright's mainly a pick player. If you want to follow up on this bass trail, I can highly recommend Victim's Family, early Fishbone, Death, Hüsker Dü, Shellac, The Jesus Lizard and Bad Brains. Darryl Jenifer is no slouch on the bass either, he has a massive bass tone! Keep up the good work, my man!

A couple of things about Rob Wright: His early setup was a P-Bass through a 70s solid state bass head on top of a Fender 4x12 and some weird, maybe homemade 1x15 or 1x18. Later, like 1990s, he used one of those silver Marshall 300 watt bass heads through a standard Marshall 4x12. Kind of Lemmy+Jah Wobble feel. And... he played that shit while he was singing. Fucking Jedi Knight of a musician, one of my heroes.

They performed as a three-piece and Rob is a pick player, brother John on drums and Andy on guitar and vocals. This song is one of my favorites in their whole discography. It actually took you to point out the actual jazzy aspects of the drumming here! They were always great songwriters. I'm pretty sure Rob used an SVT rig, bright and articulate with plenty of growl. I swear Andy's guitar recordings were direct into the board but he had a live rig where the cabinet was loaded with a bunch of what I swear were six inch speakers. I always enjoyed the upper-mid sting of their sound but I'd love to hear the "Wrong" sessions re-mixed for more bottom. Thanks again!

Bass goes into strumming power chords on the chorus and he always uses a pick on a P Bass through an overdriven Marshall guitar stack. I recommend watching some live stuff and you’ll get it. They’re essentially a trio sharing vocals and lead parts equally. Drums even set sideways on left stage side in line with the rest enhances the whole experience. They toured and thrived in the hardcore punk-scene, mainly in Europe, so they’re not really considered ‘fusion’ for that reason. Too aggressive and noisy, but I see your point. The comparison to Minutemen is pretty spot-on. Very musch the same dynamics and musical ‘politics’. I met a couple of NY jazz heads who loved them and they toured extensively with Italian Jazz/noise-fusion trio ZU, which are also awesome.

They actually started in 1979 with only Rob and John Wright and mostly Bass + Drum although in some of their early songs they replace one of their instruments with something different like guitar or (I think) keyboard. The first album "Mama" is really niche and obviously the production quality is not the best and it's very different from their later stuff, but it's already very creative and I actually really enjoy listening to it from time to time. "My Roommate is turning into a Monster", "Mama's Little Boy", "We Are the Chopped", "No Sex", "Rich Guns" and "No rest for the Wicked" are the tracks I listen to quite frequently. It's just super interesting stuff, although probably not necessarily what people wanna listen to when they think of a punk band or even of NoMeansNo specifically.

First and foremost, Rob played with a pick so there are definitely parts where he strums chords. That could be why traditional bass players might have trouble picking out exactly what he's playing at times. I also think he might have played through Marshall cabs instead of a bass cab, which could lend to his unusual tone. They do have a TON of live videos, I highly recommend checking some of them out to really see his playing style.

I first heard NOMEANSNO back at Uni towards the end of the '90s. They struck me as a punk version of Rush in a weird way.

Does anyone know how Nomeansno got their bass sound? I always loved it. Nomeansno are one of the reasons why I started playing bass. When I saw them live, his bass amp looked more like a really old guitar amp, but I could be wrong.
