We were denied filling our jerry cans to top up our fuel once in Nazca for tomorrow’s flights (neither Nazca nor Tacna have Jet A1 fuel available). While this could have sunk our chances of getting to Chile, we persisted and finally received permission from the Colonel of the adjacent military base to just push ICE over to their side of the apron, fill up our jerry cans from our low auxiliary tank, then push her back to the civil side of the apron (with permission of course) and fill up the auxiliary tank again. Lucky, lucky, lucky!
We were waiting for the weather anyway and it gave time for all the staff to get their selfies with ICE and sit inside her. They were all rooting for us and helped push ICE around.
Finally, we were off following the Pan American Highway and enjoying the breathtaking desert scenery punctuated by the green river valleys with the spectacular mountain backdrop. We left behind the overcast conditions of the coast and from 3,500 feet enjoyed improving conditions taking some great pictures you can see in the video. Nazca is famous for its geoglyphs known as the Nazca Lines - we looked but our route didn’t give us any views. Nonetheless enjoy this stunning geography!
