Yep, the low resolution of VHS hides a lot the limitations of cgi
@LordBackuro Жыл бұрын
Actually a lot of old non digital media hides cgi extremely well especially in the era when Film was still a common way to film stuff. It also depends on the cinematography and production really. Lower resolution + the grain and texture really ads to the aesthetics of a movie like that. Men in black had a similar effect but instead of realism it was the styalized and goofy in nature cgi and practical effects + older pre 2010’s styles of cinematography that helped it not look shit and low budget.

While not having the whole saga on VHS over here in the US is a little disappointing you can't deny that the DVD release was badass. The amount of bonus features on disc 2 is staggering. Deleted scenes, an Anakin featurette, a 15 part web documentary, John Williams battle of heroes music video, 15 tv ads and pictures of all the posters for the movie from around the world, a production photo gallery, battlefront 2 demo and trailers, and oh yeah a full length documentary that shows off everything that went into episode 3 in one minute long segments! I love VHS but there's just some things it couldn't hope to do. Now if only more movies got that kind of treatment for their DVD release.

These are the exact reasons why physical media should be saved as much as possible because it only means those special features risk becoming lost media. The PT on DVD along with LotR were the go-to examples of DVD being used to their fullest as premiere video formats. The bonus features and the presentation of them were amazing. Its depressing how much this element of home video has regressed since the DVD peak of the 2000s.

The last VHS tape I remembered buying was Bionicle 2 Legends of Metru Nui. After that, the format was completely gone from around 2007 moving forward. Now it seems like all physical media is slowly being phased out in light of streaming. Sometimes I think technology is advancing too rapidly and we aren't allowed to have some stuff around for a while longer before it becomes obsolete. But I guess that has more to do with environmentalism and reducing the already huge amount of waste we produce.

I KNEW IT'D BE A KOREAN RELEASE! Just recently I was looking into the Saw franchise and the first two were officially released on VHS. With Saw II actually being, from what most people can tell, the last big Hollywood horror movie officially released for VCRs. But, upon looking into the later films, I had discovered that most of the series (even into the later half of the 2000's) were put out onto tapes through a (South) Korean film localization studio. It's so cool that RoTS is also 'technically' on VHS, too! Man, I'm not enthused by much these days - - but VHS and VCRs will NEVER get old to me! There's an authenticity to their quality that just can't be matched by clearer image or higher fidelity sound.

This is goddamn amazing. You gotta wonder when even today, when people can STILL spot CGI no matter how good it is, movie studios refuse to go back to practical effects. FUN FACT: I don't know if you're familiar with Retroarch, but there are shader setting that you can apply to your games to make it look like it's being played through a VCR. You can also play video files with that shader on through its built in media player. It's pretty fun to experiment in. Like, watching modern Simpsons through a fuzzy composite connection.
@McShmoodle Жыл бұрын
You can pull a pristine copy of the Dark Crystal with not a lick of CGI in sight, press play...and immediately say "that's not real, that's a puppet!" Practical effects aren't inherently more realistic. They have a different texture to them, they have their own strengths, but they have their own limitations as well. The only reason why practical effects have such a halo effect around them in people's minds is because they aren't as common as they were before. The same reason why people will insist that vinyl sounds better than digital or that videogames were more charming with less polygons. Nostalgia and scarcity. The reason why CGI is used so much today comes down to logistics and cost effectiveness. This is neither good nor bad, it is simply a cost benefit analysis.
@thekotabear3262 Жыл бұрын
@@McShmoodle Terrible take. All Quiet on the Western Front, Akira Kurosawa's Ran, Alien, The Thing, Blade Runner. Gigantic, impressive set pieces, effects and shots all done manually with no CGI in site and they still hold up 100% today. Hell, even Galaxy of Terror which was a low budget movie since you want to use one as an example (and came out years before Dark Crystal) , had impressive practical effects for 1979
@nicolasgarant9124 Жыл бұрын
@@thekotabear3262 That doesn't really change the fact it isn't as cost effective as it used to be right ? Like, now you need to actually go out of your way to do more practical. They go with the most simple and less time consuming approach, like that's just business. Not really a question of what's better or worse. Because when there's still plenty of movies that uses practical effects, when the option is what they feel is the right one they'll do it.

I’m 99% sure when I was working at a thrift shop a few years ago we had a copy of revenge of the sith on VHS come in one day. It sat on our shelves for weeks and finally sold it somebody for like $10-$20 (because collectibility and all that, this thrift shop more or less acted as a pawn shop except we got everything for free). I’d imagine it would have been an Australian or UK version. If it wasn’t revenge of the sith, it definitely was one of the prequels but i remember telling somebody to give it a quick search because I thought it was odd to see III on VHS, I thought it was a rarity within itself. Edit: I distinctly remember telling somebody to look it up because it came in with some of the original non-remastered Star Wars VHS tapes, whoever got rid of it was definitely a hardcore or longtime collector… More than likely the guy was likely old and died and his family donated.

As you mentioned, there is a rough quality that we have moved away from in the HD era, which we try to emulate with found-footage movies and some retro video games that have CRT filters. Part of me misses watching a big budget blockbuster on a 4:3 CRT television (that has a fuzzy static when you get near the screen) and popping in a VHS and having to sit for 5 minutes while the whole thing rewinds to the beginning because you forgot to do that last time you watched the movie. The thing that hurt the foreign releases of ROTS VHS is that they come in clamshell, not slipcase. We didn't have a villains side for the ROTS spine. I do think it is strange that they had the Duel on Mustafar for the Heroes spine. However, the crazy thing is that Lucas had thought about there being 8 movies from Phantom Menace to Return of the Jedi. If he did stick with 8 movies, there definitely would not be any complete VHS collection for Star Wars fans.

There’s something about that high pitched ringing in the audio throughout an entire movie that brings back memories

Hell yeah! Fucking awesome that you found that one! Also with new companies and new movies always check the specs of the transfer. The Mandy VHS by Witter SUCKS. To make it “feel authentic” all the beautiful colors are washed out horrendously and the cropping is so bad that you legitimately cannot tell what is happening a lot of the time. It’s fucking awful, it pissed me off so much I bought equipment and learned to transfer to VHS myself and wiped the tape to redo it.

I actually recorded episodes from the season 1 of The Clone Wars on VHS in like 2010 when I was 10. I live in Poland and we did have DVD by then for some years, but still watched stuff we had on VHS. But the SW movies I watched only when it aired on TV back then.

These movies are so much better on VHS cause the "worse quality" perfectly masks all little imperfections in the CGI, making it look more realistic overall.

I remember in 2005 when people made a big deal about Revenge of the Sith coming out only on DVD and not VHS. I have Episode II on VHS and I actually like watching it on that format as it hides the clean and sterile looking CGI of the movie. I guess the same goes for this one. Revenge of the Sith was also one of the first movies I ever watched on DVD. I didn't see it in the theaters but I did see it on a large cinematic TV in my mom's friend's basement later in 2005 shortly after it came out on DVD.

Growing up we had the whole saga on VHS except Episode 3 on DVD, I didn’t know that was because it never released in VHS, I thought it was just because my family got a DVD player lololol
