Hey Lax, just a litlle bit of context. When the charachters refers to France, they are reffering to WWI at this time the main front of the war was happening in north-east France where Allied Forces (mainly French and British soldiers) fought the Germans.

I think it explains way later in the show but it's dumb they don't just say it now. I watched that first episode and decided it wasn’t for me. 90% of the show is just Tommy walking, looking down and smoking a cigarette while saying things that sound cool to 14 year olds from what friends tell me

the british pronunciation for birmingham is a combo of what you said. the "ham" is pronounced more like "um" but the rest is pronounced the same as the americans would say it, so less emphasis on the "ming"
