I've started doing that for the other YT videos I watch, too, ever since I learned that you don't get paid unless we we let the ads play. I love the segway regarding food waste and poverty. It's absolutely true obese people live in low income areas. I know about it first han It's disgusting the lower income urban areas have very little variety of fresh produce and vegetables without a high price tag. Sure chicken places and bodegas but no whole foods. Even if there was access to the better supermarkets the price point is out of reach.
@joanalorenzo69494 жыл бұрын
We don't need any more whole foods. We need more green farmer markets. Screw whole foods. Did you know that ethnic markets carry whole grains and healthier options because that's how they eat in other parts of the world. Also, the portions are smaller.

Re: the poor and obesity connection: food banks often offer those in need starchy, sugary, fatty foods. It addicts them more, they crave it more, and makes them “feel better” short term like they had some relief from stress or whatever with the sugar, fat, salt rush...I always love how excited you are to find avocados and fruit etc. in the dumpster.
@SarahVapes4 жыл бұрын
yes I agree when going to food pantries it is mainly bread and junk food. barely any veggies or fruit or even real meat. i am lucky that in my area they sometimes give out store vouchers for milk and eggs.
@thefergusonfamily38524 жыл бұрын
That is true where I live at food banks and local churches give out junk food you get no meat only sides. When stores donates the ppl working the food banks takes the good stuff and leave all these sugary, starchy foods. Plenty of times I had to go to food bank and witness the workers doing that when the big tractor and trailer bought in food the workers loaded up they cars with the meat and stuff

Amy - listen to the musical way you happened to say "5 packages of broccoli" - it had a similar tone and cadence to "5 Golden Rings" … and the 3 raspberries, sounded similar to the tune of 3 French Hens … if you saved this clip and collected others throughout the year - by next Christmas (or for Christmas in July) you could have a vegan, freegan, or dumpster diver version of the 12 Days of Christmas - except it could be 12 foods of Christmas or 12 vegetables of Christmas - something like that ...

I've made your point before. 12 pk ramen $3.88..3# bag of honeycrisp apples $8. Lunch for 2 toddlers for 12 days with the ramen. Obesity is a sign of starvation. When I first moved away from home I walked to the corner market where a 3 liter of generic cola was under $1. A tomato was also $1.. I get why the poorer choices are made.

Totally true about the correlation between income and obesity. It's cheaper to get a burger,fries,chicken nuggets and a drink for four bucks than a salad for 10 or 12. I don't eat out but If I did I'd go the cheap way. I know it's not the healthiest option but I'm also a cheapskate and on a strict budget.

I really liked this video a lot. I did a paper in school on food deserts, generational poverty, and obesity. I noticed the salads, veggies, fruit, and $80 worth of boneless chicken breasts I brought home from diving today are still here (minus what I made for dinner), but the one pack of cake I brought home is already gone. I’m just getting started with diving in ernest, and I’m going to have to be really careful about how much ultraprocessed foods I bring home. It’s too easy to bring home a lot if you find it in the dumpster, where you might only buy it on occasion as a treat in the store.
@parisgreen46004 жыл бұрын
Good point, there's such a sense of "well, you have to take everything so it doesn't go to waste" - but that's not our job. It's OK to leave stuff behind, either for other divers or because it's' just unhealthy.

They're not at all. If you eat basic, seasonal vegatables like carrots, potatoes, cabbage, mushrooms, peppers and tomatoes which are available cheaply at any British supermarket. it only gets expensive when people want imported, out of season fancy things like melons, mangoes and grapes. A single banana is 13-15p MAX at any supermarket. TCompare that to a Mars Bar that sells for 70-80p. Three bell peppers in different colours are a usually a pound for three. I sometimes get bags with five or six peppers for a pound or so at Lidl. You can usually get a net of small easy-peel oranges for a pound too at Aldi or Lidl or Home Bargains. Cabbages go for 50-60p each, red or green. Pack of onions same. A cucumber is 50-60p. Bag of carrots is around 60p too. A whole swede is cheap and goes into stews, soups, and even raw grated on salads. You can also get bags of frozen veg for less than one pound, all sorts of stuff. I buy frozen peas and frozen broccoli for less than a pound per bag, I shop between Aldi, Lidl, Home Bargains and the fancier Booths and eat mounds of vegetables and spend only 20-25 pounds a week on food. Aldi has a daily rotation of incredible deals on vegetables. Pulses and beans, dried or tinned are also incredibly inexpensive, a tin of kidney beans is 30p, red lentils are way less than one pound per 500g packet dried. Brown rice is cheap too. I soak and cook beans to make soup etc and always freeze a batch for later use. Tins of crushed tomatoes are usually less than 30p apiece. I don't have a car, can only buy what I can carry and walk a mile each way to my local Lidl. I take strong bags with me and it's worth it.

Lack of education is also a major issue, it will always be cheaper to buy a bag of rice, a sack of beans and potatos than boxes and cans of processed foods.
