@Bainsworth Oh, geez, don't throw out science. We should each strive for a balance of analytical thinking and narrative thinking. Science is where we get the analysis, and analysis is what eventually gives us permission to change. Narrative, and all it's extended meanings, is what drives change and locks it in. I'm just recently a coach, but I've been deeply thinking about this for fifteen years. (I'd go back to university if I could afford it, but I am 54. Came into JP's work only recently.)

Not yet, he is extremely well known among Western intellectuals but he still has a lot more to accomplish in order to go down in history with revolutionary figures like Carl Jung, Nietzsche, Piaget etc. That is why I am very curious of what JBP is planning to do after publishing his 2nd book (sequel to 12 Rules For Life) and finishing up his Biblical Series. I genuinely hope that JBP's 3rd book will be an extension of his ideas in 'Maps of Meaning' instead of writing another self-help book. Don't get me wrong, '12 Rules for Life' is insightful but it is essentially 'Maps of Meaning' from a more simplified, practical viewpoint. This man clearly has way more to offer than just life advice. It's time for some dense abstractions from this man.

There is so to say ,,general confusion,, of many people commenting here.Obviously this gentleman is very intelligent, educated and experienced. He uses knowledge and wisdom of other Masters of psychology as germans Zikmund Freud, Karl Jung, Nietze or phenomenal russian writers Solzenicyn, Dostojevskyj ,also uses knowledge of Christian believe and Buddhism and other sources. It has already been invented though. He summarise and applies it to various life situations which only highly inteligent and intelectual person is capable of = Great J.Peterson

Look for a psychologist accessible to you! You can do it if you try!!! What I learned from this video is: Don't give up after you fail, just improve your tactics, reset your goal and try again! If you don't suffer now you will suffer later, and suffering later can be like hell but you suffering now will make you stronger to face hell later and survive.
@joshuacrumley2031
@joshuacrumley2031 6 жыл бұрын
I heard him say in another video here, if I can find it I'll link it here. But, the path to your goal isn't always straight up, or even a straight line. You'll rise up a bit, then fall into a desert. Find a way out of that desert, and you'll rise up to a higher plateau. Then fall waaaay down. Then get back up and go even higher this time. Of course that's not word for word, but that's the best I can do with what I remember about it. That's the idea.

Correction or Addition: To transcend the physical, one needs to shift his/her mind or consciousness to the spiritual. Jesus Christ said, "seek first the kingdom of heaven, & the righteousness of God, & ALL THINGS will be added to you." Instead of following beautiful but limited & destructive philosophies, we must follow Jesus Christ & receive a true, eternal & meaningful life.

"compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not who someone else is today" This is gold. There will always be someone that appears to be doing better than you, and there will always be people doing worse than you. If you always focus on those doing better you will struggle to stay positive, and if you focus on who you are doing better than you will lose humility and the drive to improve. Focus on improving who you are by listening to those who know more and helping those who know less than you.

@@someonesomeone25 aaaaaaah, yes, that's the challenge... Your first sentence actually brought tears to my eyes, coz I've been there (and still am from time to time). I think only a few "lucky" or driven or (fill in the blanks) people find just one purpose in life. The rest of us will have to wrestle with the search... I haven't figured out why that is- yet. Will I, ever? Only the heavens know, really, I think. The times when I'm truly, blissfully happy is when I'm involved in something bigger than myself (volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, etc.), or when I master playing a piece of music (on piano) that makes my soul sing, or sometimes smiling at a stranger and getting involved in a great conversation. My purpose for the past 20years was being the best mother I could be for my kids, doing better than I was done by my parents - I think (I hope) I managed to do a halfway decent job with that. Now I have to re-evaluate and see what works for the next few years. I've been drawn to walk the Camino Santiago de Compostela... we'll see.

@JD Jones What a lazy, arrogant, quite possibly dishonest way to look at it. Everyone has a drive to learn, it just manifests based on their values. Let's pretend you value math. So you learn 20 ways to prove the area of a right angle triangle. What about this hypothetical lazy, arrogant, dishonest individual living a life of denial? They're going to value something. Let's say their name is Freddy, and they value baseball. Freddy can list off all the team names, the major players, quite a bit of history of the sport and a myriad of other details and insights. But Freddy doesn't care about subjects such as math, or learning for learning's sake, so people are puzzled by him and conclude he must just be deeply flawed.

Extremely inspiring! I myself was raised by an overprotective mom. But she has 5 kids, and had them at a young age.. It's really due to my father's verbal and emotional abuse that made her so nervous and wanting to keep us safe. Plus we live in a country with a lot of terroism, so that amplified her anxiety. I was for years conditioned to be more introverted, not to take risks not to try. Just stay at home curled up and safe. This created a lot of problems for me as an adult who never wanted to deal with difficulties, pain and challenges. I wish I was taught that the goals in life are to be resilient, strong, face things head-on. After hearing this I hope to gain courage and change my outlook in life. It won't happen in a day but I dream of raising a family - teaching my kids how to deal with life and pain and growth. I've wasted far too many years of my life hiding scared of life.

I came away from watching him with a new confidence, a new outlook and a new love for myself. I am ready to make the best of my life now. He just makes you think......YES, YES YOU'RE SO RIGHT, I can and will do this.

My Dad is 45 he had me when he was 21 I am now 23. Few years ago I struggle with a lot of things in life and I would then say it was because of my Dad who is still like a teenager. I refuse to be like him I knew my education was very poor and I struggled with school but now I am a science student in my country I was a former engineer student in 2018 but I left because I have a desire to study medicine of which I believe I will start next year But I am currently studying Medicinal Chemistry.. I love listening to Jordan Peterson because his speech are always piercing.

I'm throwing this into the ether. My father passed away 2 years ago. Ever since then I've been struggling to find meaning in my life. I worry that I will never have the meaning that I used to have. I thought it gets easier with time, but every day it seems like it takes another bite out of my soul. I hope anyone reading this overcomes whatever they are fighting.

My life devoted to truth, knowledge and later on love. Almost 6 years fighting for custody, playing it truthfully, left me literally broke on the street with a big hate for the dutch postmodern society and it`s people, preparing me to become a new kind of western terrorist planning to destroy all the responsible ones. Jordan Peterson saved me from doing those kind of things and saved me from killing myself. He brought me back to the way of kowledge and truth and I can only hope that the love will once follow in this lifetime. A deep Thank You Mr. Peterson. Jai Guru Dev

No, happiness is a feeling, like excitment and it comes as a bi product of the positive outcomes which are inevitable when you pursue a meaningful path. However I have to say, meaning, taking responsibility does not always correlate to happiness at all. Often is results in deep uncomfortabelness, feeling rejected and depressed. I am sorry to say it but it does. That is the necessary suffering that comes with it. But I can garauntee that you weel feel much happier down the line, when you look back and say "well I did everything I could to do the right thing". I was challenging the unethical and hyper political incidents in my workplace, everyone including my partner at the time was against me. Made me feel like shit, alienated me and acted like I was an idiot. Well guess what? I am in the best place mentally I have ever been now. When I look back at the hard times, I take great comfort in knowing that I didn't spend my time sat in the corner crying letting the world around me fall apart. (Although sometimes I did). For the most part, I SHOWED UP. I sat in the cab of ambulances parked around the corner hiding from passers by whilst crying my eyes out. Then I wiped the tears off my face and drove to the next call. That is what Jordan taught me. So whilst it may be hard in the short term, and at the time, I promise it does you the world of good in the future knowing that you tried to be the best person you possibly could, even when tragedy came at you at a more frequent rate than hot dinners. Pick up your load, and bare it. Go forth into the battle against your demons. Whilst you throw every single thing you can at your mental health difficulties (therapy, mood books, meditation, exercise, routine, diet, medication whatever) work on being a better person too. I can now say, that when it all went wrong for me I STILL SHOWED UP. Jordan Peterson saved and changed my life. I wish you all the best of success.

~ 26 minutes - one of the most profound comments from Dr. Peterson - "I think the most fundamental truth is that despite the fact that life is suffering.... people can transcend that and partly the way they transcend that is by pursuing things of value.... and so that if there is no value proposition at hand then you have no meaning to justify the difficult conditions of your life and that's brutally difficult for people" The naked and amazing truth this man speaks is so clearly focused and understood. Love this guy! Best export from Canada ever. Well, aside from some of my favorite hockey players...

He is one of the greatest minds of our time. Thank you Jordan. Your delivery of what should be glaringly (but seemingly inflammatory and wrong to some?) insiteful advice as to how to be a better person, is laid out in a way that really resonates and is so accessible. Knowing you’re the creator of your own misery is a powerfully humbling experience and typically the more aware you are of how life is typically what you make of it and that output or what you get out of life insofar as material things is empty and soul crushing if you’re of the mind that’s going to make you happy or “better” in my opinion the payout of truth is typically growth and growth (growing pains ) hurts but you’re bigger and better as a result
