I had three gerbils in the past six years. I got my first two back when I just got out of the sixth grade. Literally my dad picked me up from school in the last day and took me to get my babies. My first two being Lily and Chubbs both girls. Chubbs later died two years later. Lily got a new friend named Teddy. Again both girls. Teddy died a year later due to complications. I had Lily up until the end of my freshman year. She lived a long happy life. And I loved her. Dearly. But I had to mention something. I moved to a new school in the 7th grade. There I got bullied and harassed and I still am to this day. I’m a senior now. Lily was with me through it all. She was a best friend. Every time I’d walk over to her bin I’d stick me head in and say “kiss” and she’ll put her nose to mine. After her I had dwarf hamsters but that was two years ago. My dad tried to replace Lily with them. Junior year I had another hamster. But currently I have none. I can’t replace Lily no matter how hard I try. I want to be able to have that connection again but I can’t seem to do it. Any advice?

I'm happy she was able to find a partner! I'm looking for one for my own gerbil, Peach, right now and never really thought to check rescues because I tend to assume they don't take gerbils as they're not as popular as cats, dogs, or rabbits. I got Peach and her sister, Rosie as daughters for my elderly lone gerbil (who's brothers passed before him) since I knew he was at the end of his life. He was a great father figure and was so excited about both of them, but unfortunately, Rosie was a runt and didn't thrive... And George soon passed a couple weeks later from old age. Thank you for your work and informative videos! I will be sure to check up on any adoption services.

This is off topic but my hamster has been with me for 2 months and doesn't usually like background noise whether it's unfamiliar talking or tv (even at low volume). He was a surrender to a local pet store so I think he may have history with unexpected loud sounds or approaches. Side note: some petcos actually will take in birds, theres a petco near my workplace (I like to visit the animals in my freetime) that takes in birds when they have the space for them, but they're not kept in wellness like normal, they're on the floor and they have a little sign that says their information and that they're for adoption (however the adoption fees are typically higher than hamsters because that particular petco gets a lot of parrot surrenders)

I know this is an old video but want to comment anyway. My sister used to work at Petco and she was in charge of the small animals and the adoption program. I have rescued several hamsters through her over the years. They really do try their best to keep the adoption animals healthy and happy. My sister was always taking them to the vet. My most memorable adoption via her was a white Syrian hamster named Tater. She told me that this poor little guy had a prolapsed rectum and she had to give him a lot of meds and treatments. As a result, she told me he was not friendly and bit. Well, I wanted him because otherwise his outlook might not have been good. I got there and he stood on his butt and had a crooked little mouth. He reminded me of a little country boy hence the name Tater. I got a handful of sunflower seeds and stuck my hand into his tank expecting to be attacked. Instead he climbed into my hand to pouch the seeds. That was it, he was mine. He lived a long (for a hamster) and happy life with me. I earned the title "hamster whisperer" and every time she had a hamster with an attitude I adopted it. Just wanted to share my knowledge about Petco and Tater. Happy new year!

Hey everyone, hey Munchie. After watching your video i hope someone here can give me some advice. I have a gerbil at home as well (living in a group of course). She started bloating just like sugar. We have been to the vets multiple times. They did ultra sounds and an x-ray but all you see is a lot of fluid. Storm (gerbils name) is doing fine tho. No signs that it is bothering her or anything. She is a little more tired then the others but eating, drinking fine being quite active and everything. We are giving here Vitamin B and Traumeel (homeopathic medicine) as suggested by the vet. The vet also said she doesn't think there is anything else we can do but trying to aid here with the medicine and give here a good rest of here live. Storm is only a little over a year and so i am wondering if anyone else has any similar stories and can help me with some feedback. We don't know her medical history as the gerbils we have are rescues as well. I am thinking about getting a second opinion by a vet but i don't want to stress Strom out to much especially since she is acting finde and like herself.. Any advice is appreciated.

I think my senior male syrian hamster had kidney failure, bc he had the same weird lumps/bulges on his hip area. He sadly passed before we could bring him to a vet. He went downhill so, so fast. Monday night(the night before he passed) he was fine eating, drinking and cuddling with me. Tuesday morning at 8:00 am I went to a appointment and when I got back my younger brother took him out for a cuddle and he was cold to the touch and very lethargic. I became very worried. I tried to keep him comfortable before he could be seen by a vet. He passed next to me and my family at around 8:00 pm Tuesday night on 1/7/20. I'm sorry for the sad comment, but do you think it was kidney failure?

Gerbils that “don’t get along” are just the introverts
@fluffyowlcat9454 жыл бұрын
The reason why I would sometime have a lone gerbil is because their roommate, the one I bought when I got the other, had passed away and its very difficult to introduce a new gerbil with a older one. Now if you have the equipment and know how to do it that’s fine, but for me it’s difficult since its about a hour drive to the nearest pet store to buy new gerbils these days and I don’t have the space to do it. So I mostly buy them as pairs and wait till both have pass before thinking of buying a new pair. The last pair was call Snow White & Regina and the next pair I’m hoping to call Sam & Den, guess where the names came from.

I already commented on how good I think the Petco adoption program is but I wanted to talk about what pieces of s*it some people are. My first rescue through the Petco where my sister worked was a hamster who I named Ginger. She was found on a summer day in their parking lot in a shoebox. Left there to die I guess. Another time, these people had just rented a house and when they were moving in they found two hamsters (female) in a POPCORN CAN! Syrians. The previous tenants had just left them there. So they brought them into Petco because they didn't know how to care for hamsters. I adopted them and they both pitched a fit when I separated them. I know you're not supposed to do this but I put them back together. Folks don't try this at home because usually it's a disaster. These two did everything together and cuddled together while sleeping. I suspect they were littermates. When the first one passed the other one also passed a few weeks later. Their names were Cleo and Amber. Another rescue through Petco was a female robo hamster who had a badly scarred face. Half of her face had been ripped off because her idiot owners had put her in with another robo who was aggressive. They took her to Petco because they "couldn't afford" vet care. I adopted her after she healed and named her Braveheart. I loved all of the hamsters mentioned dearly. Thank you for what you do Munchie! People suck and you get these poor little creatures out of harm's way whenever you can. You rock!

This is a little off topic but at the same time relating to something you mentioned. A few years ago this family took their dog to the vet to get euthanized. Of course like vets are supposed to do they did a check up on the dog before euthanizing it. The vet noticed nothing wrong, the dog was completely healthy. The family just wanted to get rid of it right away, they didn’t want to deal with the dog so they thought it would be a good idea to euthanize it. The vet told them that this is not right and they shouldn’t do this but the family didn’t care and just wanted the dog gone. The vet couldn’t do that, she didn’t have the heart to so she just kept the dog and the family never knew. Hearing that just breaks my heart, like who would want to take the life of a completely healthy living animal?!? The vet that kept the dog is the vet that I go to all the time, she is so great. I’m so sorry about Sugar, you did the right thing. I really appreciate you taking your animals to the vet without hesitation. I really appreciate what you do. Thank you.🥰
