Spoilers for the entire thing obviously: The original Fate Stay/Night VN is ultimately about ideology vs. reality, and I love how the three routes of the VN draw the reader into this by forcing the reader to go through the routes in order. The first route, Fate, is often touted as the weakest and most “boring” route, but it primarily exists to introduce Shirou and his lofty ideals to the audience. This is represented by Saber, the physical embodiment of his perfect ideal; a hero of justice who never wavers and never gives up. As such, it doesn’t truly challenge Shirou’s ideology too much outside of the occasional comment from Rin. The second route, Unlimited Blade Works, builds upon our knowledge of the Fate route by now challenging Shirou’s ideals at every turn. Not surprisingly, this route is represented by Rin who is in some ways “ideal” but in many ways far from the “perfect” Saber. She’s great, but also very flawed and easily makes a mess of things when she goes too far or loses control of her anger. UBW shows Shirou where his ideal will ultimately lead him, with the predominant theme being “fighting for ideals doesn’t protect people, it only protects the ideals themselves,” This will not end well for Shirou when all is said and done, but Shirou chooses to stick to ideals anyway, hoping to will them into reality. And then we have Heaven’s Feel. There’s a reason this route is represented by Sakura. She represents the cold, dark reality of this world, a world filled with abuse and torture hidden from public view. She’s not the perfect embodiment of Shirou’s ideal, nor is she presented as “ideal if a bit flawed,” Sakura is presented as human, and a very tragic one at that. This is the route where Shirou makes the decision to protect the person he cares about (reality) rather than his lofty ideals. He learns the hard way that in order to protect the people he loves, he must forgo his ideals, or at least put people above ideals. Putting ideals above people often twists them into corrupted versions that are no better than the evil they were meant to fight. No better is this symbolically represented than toward then end when Shirou is forced to kill Saber, the literal embodiment of his ideals as demonstrated in the Fate route, as she has become a corrupted ideal. It’s a great scene in a great ending to the story, and Fate S/N remains a compelling albeit flawed piece of fiction to this day.

But why would UBW Shirou still stick to his ideals even though it's going to lead himself down a path of sorrow and regret.
@spencerpurple5213 жыл бұрын
@@icouldntthinkofaname479 I'm fairly sure that in the UBW Visual Novel route, Archer's words do reach him and he decides to temper his ideals to a more reasonable level. It is also made clear that Shirou will not actually become Archer due to Rin's influence. If Shirou is about to go off the deep end, Rin will be there to drag him back if necessary. Of course, UBW anime has obviously done a poor job of showing this. They even added a scene at the end of the epilogue that shows Shirou walking across a desert looking like Archer. The director made several odd choices of throughout, but that might be one of his worst.
@royd2093 жыл бұрын
@Tony Tran ideals don't directly corelate to hope, ideals are just a standpoint which some people just have, but are not too aligned by them, an ideal dream to get a great job one per say, these are ideals that while present in one's mind are not what a person is centered around, shirou's ideal to save people is directly what makes the entirety of his personality, for shirou, UBW and archer act as the very representation of what his current mindset will lead him to become, archer doesn't state that having an "ideal" was wrong, he just believed that having an ideal like the one shirou had, where he will sacrifice everything he possesses to save everyone, will lead to his own end , UBW wasn't about archer denying having ideals, it was about shirou renouncing archer's hatred for his own ideals, as they serve as bitter reminder to the servant of his own failure in life. but what shirou does understand from that is knowing his own limitations, that is what sets UBW shirou apart from archer, he is ready to admit at one point that regardless of how much he wants to save everyone, he will only save those he had the moral and physical capability to save, start of UBW shirou wouldn't have murdered gilgamesh, end of UBW shirou did, archer made him realize how dreaming about saving everyone was not but a fool's paradise shirou lived in and using that understanding of his own dream, shirou moves forward, pursuing the same path as archer but not losing what he desires and possesses himself, that is why shirou from UBW doesn't become archer

@@spencerpurple521 To answer the last bit, it was actually a poorly-executed version of an epilogue Nasu wrote for the anime, although the elements are still there. Basically, what's being depicted is Shirou SURPASSING Archer. @@cipher-one and even then, that's the story as told by Ovid in his Metamorphoses. I don't recall that occurring in any of the prior tellings that we have record of, but I may be wrong and have missed something. Hesiod, I believe was the first to mention the Gorgon(s) as three sisters, 2 immortal, one not (Medusa). Medusa and Poseidon were noted to have slept together in Theogony (in a field, not Athena's temple). No mention of transformation, may have been monstrous, may have not. Later tellings do mark the gorgon sisters as monsters ("Bibliotheca" from pseudo-Apollodorus, for example) and having always been monsters. I think Ovid was the only one to have mentioned Medusa alone being monstrous and cursed as such. *shrug* Fate's version probably does a mix and match of these - a dose of Hesiod's 2 immortal + 1 mortal Gorgon Sister, a bit of Ovid's monstrous transformation idea, etc. Also discussed a bit here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGPCiYeepZiXrq8

I think it is also noteworthy that we never saw some kind of relic or catalyst for the summoning of Rider, which is why the summoner him-/herself is going to become the catalyst, thus a match in personality is sought. Sakura and Rider share this trait of being a victim of circumstance and labeled a monster for it. A monster that is betrayed by those close to them with the goal of killing them. Medusa was betrayed by Athena in this regard and Sakura by Zouken later on. Which is why I think it is fair to assume that the Fate Medusa suffered from the same fate. Especially if we consider her noble phantasm to be the Pegasos. A being born from the corpse of the killed Gorgon. It is said to be the child of Poseidon and Medusa. Other than that Medusa is especially fond of Sakura, where she values her well-being above all, which is a kind of weird relationship, especially considering that Sakura handed the reigns of Rider to Shinji. The most plausible reason for me is that Medusa understands Sakura on a more interpersonal level, such as shared experiences, which is why Rider is adamant about saving Sakura to prevent her from suffering the same fate as herself. No other servant is shown to be this loyal to their master. Most of the time they seek something for themselves but Rider only desires happiness for Sakura, which let's me believe that there might be some credibility to my thesis.

When they revealed the truth about Sakura, I felt like, "That's it. Its this girl. This girl deserves this road to happiness". It's not just because agency was taken from her that made me want her to be with Shiro. It's not even about Sakura being saved by Shiro either. It's about wanting to see her overcome the darkness within herself and those that possessed her. It's that moment where you want Shiro to walk by her side, hold her hand and guiding her to that light. Something that's deeper than love, I think that's family. And to have you define the sibling dynamic between Rin and Sakura truly encompasses it.

Thank you for mentioning Rin's involvement to Sakura's story. Due to the nature of light novels, the story of Sakura can often be viewed by certain fans of her to be a hero story about Shiro saving Sakura and solving all her problems. Later on in the Fate franchise, the character archetype of Sakura is often characterized as "One who will devote herself to one significant other (most cases the reader surrogate)". A lot of people love Sakura for her 'submissiveness', ignoring how much the story of Fate SN is Sakura is about her submissiveness being taken advantage of. How much Sakura internalize abuse and weaponize it when she finally gained power. Her agency is important for her story, yet most Sakura archetypes follows the story of a character's agency being taken from her. But fetishize and sexualize her defense mechanisms towards abuse. Don't get me wrong, sexual expression is an expression of agency for certain characters. but Sakura-type characters are defined by their objectification, and sometimes the story just indulges in the fantasy instead of exploring it.
@zenrythebard55873 жыл бұрын
I'm kinda lost at how Sakura is now known for her submissiveness. I don't know the complete story surrounding the Sakura Five, but of the characters I do know, at least BB and Meltryllis are definitely not submissive. Kama's whole story is surrounding how horribly the Hindu gods and myths treated him/her, and how they try to break away from it through becoming Beast III/R. That leaves Parvati I guess, right? Sure she's the "ideal wife" type of character, but submissive is a word I would not use for her.

I think Nasu have something wrong here when writing about Sakura. While he trying to write about her "resistance", he finally made the readers misunderstanding and think Sakura = 'submissiveness'. What if a weak person like us normal human trying to save someone in the world full of superman and devil? She will not use kamekameha to fight, but will endure the pain to help someone who she loves. Remember, Sakura saved/tries to save Shirou and Rin totally 9 times in HF route. Although she can't fight, but she accept the torture ( worms pit) to save them, tries to not sleep, and even suicide two time to save Shirou. But Nasu usually mentions it very lightly that we usually ignore it if don't reading carefully. Then, in the last battle, Shirou suddenly mentions " even she's going to die, she still protects me.".
@RagnarokMasta3 жыл бұрын
@Avenger GLFX Wouldn't make sense either there, since Sakura has many scenes in HF where she asks to help fight despite her condition, or questions how to use her power to help Shirou out. She gets shut down, but she still makes the attempt.

Man, I was thinking about how it was Rin's hug and not Shirou's love the one thing that brought Sakura back to her senses and I then I watched your video and you mentioned pretty much that. I love this video. To further reinforce your point that Sakura sees Rin as her hero and not Shirou, in Lost Butterfly, the theme that plays when Rin comes flying through the window to save Sakura is literally called "she is her hero"
@RagnarokMasta3 жыл бұрын
There is an important caveat to this though, in that in the VN, there were many times that Rin could have cleared the air between them(Sakura originally is the one that tries to extend the olive branch first but it only shows one scene of that in the movie), and Rin didn't attempt that until Sakura was at her lowest point. Precisely because she was steeling herself to kill her. So while its good it happened, it could have ended in disaster if Shirou wasn't there to follow up. So there is nuance to that. We shouldn't negate Shirou's importance even if we want to make sure people are aware of Rin's.
@reymongarcia81093 жыл бұрын
@@RagnarokMasta Yeah, I know, I read the VN as well, I agree, Dark Sakura could have been avoided if Rin had been honest from the start. But I like characters with flaws as long as the story recognizes their flaws, which the story proves it recognizes it, its why Rin's apology to Sakura is so great but its alzo why the Femme fatale ending is so good (and tragic)

@@RagnarokMasta Yes and this is what I love so much about Fate. The interactions between all the characters are so intertwined and well written. Shirou was a sturdy support pillar who Sakura was able to find comfort in. Rin ultimately extended her hand to pull Sakura out of the darkness in an act of redemption for her cold magus nature before. And Sakura did all she could to reject Zouken and the shadow with the help of those she loved. All 3 were key in each other’s character- and taking away any of them would change everything.

One of the reasons I love the Fate/Stay story lines is how each one answers the question of "What is Justice?" like you said. The main route if when the answer is justice is for everyone, while Blade Works is justice for a few. Heaven's Feel is about justice for the one, for Sukura. She finally gets what she deserved the whole time, unending love from those closest to her, and that in of itself is a from a justice. I love the way you break everything down and I can't wait for your next video.

When I think of Fate/Stay Night, I think of all the routes woven together where routes can interact with the others and, with the addition and subtraction of certain elements, can enhance the the overall narrative and experience. Like UTS said, FSN is a story of justice: personal justice, defining justice, the worth of justice to say the least. Following Shirou, each of the 3 routes our main protagonist has decisions to make how how to interpret and value justice and not end up with the same conclusion. In the Fate route Shirou ultimately choose to largely ignores the reality and situation of things to whole heartiy pursue being a Hero of Justice. In the UBW route Shioru acknowledges reality but still ultimately pursie being a Hero of Justice. Finally, with the HF route, Shirou, when encountered with reality of things, decides to abandon his Hero of Justice mentality and save Sakura, his love interest. Writing this down and quantifying this one of many aspect of the story reveals the intricacies of the overall work of FSN where a lot of newer and casual fans miss because the they view each route as a seprate and largely unrelated story. Unfortunately I really cant blame them all that much today since the franchise of Fate is ballooned magnitudes more than its initial release in 2005 and even from my first play through of the VN in 2009. Regardless, when FSN was first release it was a novel approach to story telling and it being greater than the sum of its parts. Sucks that, since its release, many imitators have come about diluting the uniqueness of FSN, even from its creators, that new fans are unable to recognize.

Thank you for the analysis. I did cry the second movie and it's so wrong watching this because I haven't watch the third one lol but I couldn't help myself. And now I still cried watching this because I really did see myself to Sakura and Illya although we have different situations. I know I shouldn't compare or take similarities to a fictional character but at least I could related to them. A lot of people tends misunderstood this kind people and knowing this person analysis and narrated this fictional character gone through is enough, at least get an idea how they went this tough and rough situation. I grew up believing I'm alone forever, I do not trust myself making my own decision and I don't even know if I have rights or if I'm in the right. I don't know if I was gaslit or manipulate but at the same time I'm aware of what's happening. Despite my confusion from being right, I'm still aware what's happening around me and the resistant I couldn't handle that has been keep bottle up within me, telling myself I'm a burden to people so I have no one to let it out. In my mind, I'm too weak, stupidly naive, attention-seeker, pity-seeker, too sensitive. Now, I lash out of people, I'm cold and distance. Deep inside however, it hurts and painful. I was never encouraged to be myself, I grew up rejecting my own ideal version. When people tried to cheer you up, most of them are just empty promise, dismiss your feelings and what you've gone through, telling you people have it worse than you. Then they tell you you're ungrateful because at least people tried to comfort you. I don't know if it just me but It so empty. I look up the people who I know suppose to care for me but they end up the opposite, therefore I have not grown into normal person or I don't even know what's normal or if moral is even important. I'm socially awkward, too shy, I stutter my word, my brain takes time to think how should I approach or respond. It really turns the worse life than I have hope for. I don't know. If you reach the end, thank you! Means the world to me. For those who are going through like Sakura and Illya, keep your heads up and be strong because one day you will meet the right person. I'm no place to say this because I'm still alone and vulnerable but I hope you would know someonw, Including me as a stranger here, thinking about you and praying you find happiness after we both gone through. Type Moon usually have the conflict between what did they write in novel and what are they answer in the interview. To explain the setting of Sakura, they need to answer 3 questions: - Why Tokiomi sent Sakura to Matou. - Why Rin never save Sakura ( although she can imagine something wrong is happening). - The relationship between Sakura and Shinji. And until now, they explain both of three reasons follow very confuse way. That is why we see very many theories and discussions on Internet about them. The topic “ Why Rin never saved Sakura” and “ why Sakura never askes Rin for help” is two topics which Nasu never mentions directly. One of the most simply theories is “ Rin knows nothing”. But follow what she said in VN, she knows Zouken, knows why Sakura is sent away, knows Sakura trying to ask her to return as the older sister ( always wear the ribbon). She even mentioned that Sakura endures the great suffer when was adopted by another family. Nasu even mentions that for 8 years, every classmates avoids Sakura because she look very terrible, that mean Rin realize that Sakura is suffering ,too. But although she aware something very terrible is happening. She still belive that “ Sakura isn’t Magus”, and refuse to save her or call her “sister”. We even know in VN, because Rin always spying Sakura, she knows Sakura loves Shirou and never smile exclude beside him. But it will not prevent her to accept Shirou’s love, and really leave Sakura behind to flee with him on his travelling ( UBW Ending). I never understand Rin’s logic here. Nasu actually never mentions about it clearly. Follow your theory, she think she will trying to become the great Magus as the encouragement to her sister. However, I don’t feel any part in VN look like this. -------------------- Not only that, I feel something very dark behind Rin. She usually find the good reason to justify her cruel action. And she fools not only everyone among her, but even herself,too. - She knows HGW actually is the ritual of something, and every war caused much of damage to the innocents. But she actually waiting to HGW5 with the exciting ( although she totally ok if she loses or even destroy HG). - She maybe know Zouken is the vampire ( even Kirei knows). But she ( and her family) leaves him alone to kill and eat innocent to prolong his life for 200 years. After Fate or UBW route, she leave Fuyuki to study, let Zouken totally control the city and kill/eat everytime he wants. - When Shirou is killed ( day 3). Follow Magus’ law, she has to kill any innocent to keep the magecraft in secret. She begins to fool herself and the readers that she doesn’t have anyway to save his life. Instead, she will see his face in the last time. And everything suddenly change when she realize that boy is the guy whose Sakura and she loves. ( " Rin loves Shirou" is the last reason before when Rin decides to save him. This part usually is ignored by the readers, and isn't is shows in the UBW anime.). - During day 9 HF, although she still doesn’t know Sakura is the Shadow ( Rin only know it from day 10), she really tries to kill her sister, because follow Magus’s law, they have to kill any Magus who can’t control their power (to keep the magecraft in secret). But she tries to justify her action by saying that is to protect the innocents ( why she actually can see that Sakura actually can’t cast the spell in the range more large than… the library room). I always think we need the character who can play the role of “court”, to explain the darkside/true self of every other character in FSN, especially is Rin. ---------------------- The card game should be move to the warehouse scene in movie 2, to show how hopeless Sakura feels when she realizes that Rin and Shirou really have feeling about each other.

Each time Rin and Shirou are out together, the shadow seems to target Rin, like at the school with the spiky ball things (where Sakura also flinches at Shirou's comment that he and Rin were out for the whole day) or in the forest with Archer or the time they fought Zouken. Each attack sort of progressively gets more dangerous which could be the building resentment that finally releases in their final battle where she embodies the shadow and gets the power to express herself. idk jus a thought

One thing I haven’t really seen discussed is which of the three Fate Stay Night routes seems the most likely based on who the main character, Shirou Emiya, is as a person. Obviously the nature of the story means these three timelines will always simultaneously exist. Impacted only by the decisions of the reader. But having gone through all three, which does the fandom think is most likely based on everything we know about Shirou from the whole story. We know what decisions WE’D make, but what decisions do we think HE’D make. Personally, as a direct continuation of the events of the fourth Holy Grail War, and based on what I know about Shirou from the three routes, I’m going to say Heaven’s Feel seems the most likely. One reason being that Shirou, no matter the timeline, has always been a Hero looking for somebody to save, and Sakura is a person that has just about lost all hope, and desperately needs to be saved. What do you all think?

Amazing man you perfectly captured the fleeing feeling that i had during the film
@basementreviewer7883 жыл бұрын
Glad you made another video for the 3rd heavens feel movie. It was easily the best of the trilogy imo, and you captured why perfectly. The reasons stated here are also why i think heavens feel is the best route by a long shot. Not only does it properly criticize and challenge Shirou's character more than any other, but it also makes his romance with Sakura the centerpiece of the narrative, instead of just a bonus(like in ubw with rin's romance for example), and said romance is used to enhance and develop both characters, not only him. Sakura is definitely the best written female character of the fate series given her complexity and dynamic character arc. Throughout the 3 movies, we see a lot of her personality and new sides to it, and all of that is used to build up to her eventual change at the end of the 2nd HF movie. But it doesnt stop there. Rin was, ironically, a better character here than in her own route lol. She also has more sides of the personality shown, even with the limited screentime of movies. And that personality is put to great use to contrast and challenge Sakura, while at the same time saving her. And as a fan of fate/zero , i was pleasantly surprised to see that Kirei managed to be explored as much as he did in the 3rd movie, giving more insight on how he hates himself and wanted to be normal. Sakura, Shirou and Rin alone would make HF already a pretty fucking good story, but Kirei and Illya made it go beyond that and achieve masterpiece levels.
@lordtouchme54173 жыл бұрын
I liked kirei more here than in zero. It made me sypathise with a guy who only feels pleasure in the suffering of other. His goal of just wanting justification for his existence from someone like him(angra maynu) almost makes him relatable in a way. People seek aproval from others and kirei wanted that despite his alien nature. It made him sympathetic and more complex than just phycho who loves doing evil stuff. He wanted aproval ,justificatiom from something so badly he would watch the world burn and let a devil be born for it. He fought so hard for it, destroying his body, punching a living sword in shirou and even with no heart fought till his last breath. He even died with a smile on his face. The VN defintly makes kirei and shirou's dyconomy a lot better but I feel like the movie still did him justice

@@lordtouchme5417 the absolute worse thing this trilogy did was completely yeet Kirei’s character arc. What was the point of even having the final fight when all the narrative buildup is nonexistent. Not to mention they completely butchered the fight anyway. It’s sad knowing secondaries and anime onlies will never get to experience the absolute god tier dynamic between Shirou and Kirei. Poor Jouji, man did his absolute best in voicing him just to get a max 10 minutes of screen time.

IMO I think UBW is must better written than HF for a variety of reasons.
