Recently I had the opportunity to test and use the new DZOFILM Arles Vista Vision prime lenses.
It was fitting to film in the city of Arles which the lenses are named after.
We wanted to add an artistic side to this project and get inspired from the place that Van Gogh painted and lived in.
My wife is an illustrator so I followed her exploring the city, finding inspiration for her own work.
And I captured some of the scenes the famous painter immortalised through his paintings.
This was our first time visiting Arles, and my first time using the lenses.
For this project I also focused on light and shadow as well as vibrant colours.
This was still a test shoot so I also filmed in a way that I sometimes wouldn’t (ie pointing directly at the sun, or shooting wide open a lot)
We filmed for 2 days in the city of Arles and one afternoon back home in the French Alps.
I used the 25, 35, 50, 75 and 180mm.
Shot mostly between T1.4 and T2.8
Most of the footage is shot handheld, with the DJI Focus Pro
Filmed on the BMCC6K, in 6K DCI at 24 and 48 FPS.
Some shots on the Ronin RS4 Pro and mini iFootage Tripod.

great video! I have a question about connecting arles to dji lidar. Did you connect and calibrate without problems? since I already had problems with sigma ff prime when connecting to lidar dji

It’s unbelievable how every frame is an master y its own! Love your work! I have one question, how do you stabilize your footage. When I shoot hand held (pretty similar setup) I still get some kind of motion even in shots where no camera movement is intended. Would love to here from you how you get so smooth shots :)

Thanks a lot!! I stabilise in FCPX, I also make sure to stay quite stable when I film. I’ve made a video before about it so feel free to check it out. A lot is to do with position and breathing. And I always shoot for 10max for static shots. I had to use the RS4 pro for a lot of the walking shots in this video though as the lenses are quite heavy.

Thanks so much for watching!! I think both the Arles and Meike S35 are amazing value for their respective prices but they offer different things. The Arles are FF, faster, and better built so overall better lenses but the S35 are lighter, cheaper and have more character :).

amazing dynanic range and sharpness - thanks for compiling & sharing this great content - when you say you capture in 6k DCI & outputting to 4k in resolve I suppose. Is downscaling superior over recording in 4k DCI and outputting (unscaled) to 4k or is the 6k recording mainly done for the benefit of GIRO stabilisation ? - would be great if you could explain / in future video.

Thanks for watching!! 6K DCI and I export in 4K ProRes to edit and grade and also archive or upload for footage licensing :). I always prefer to shoot in high resolution and down sampling rather than shooting in 4K. I always prefer to shoot raw for initial adjustments such as iso and wb.

Thanks!! Yes still the same KD stock :). And I still use the same process I describe in the video I made a little while ago. I thought about doing LUTS but I think the way I grade is too specific to my own work sometimes and might not work for general purposes if that makes sense. But again I might one day :)

I recently shot a real estate review for a friend of mine and he told me that my camera doesn’t have enough detail and the problem is that I use 12 to 1. I mainly shoot weddings and I’ve always been happy with 12 to 1 compression. I’d like to hear yours opinion on this matter?

Very nice aesthetic throughout this film. I really like the back story of Van Gogh having done art in Arles that you went there and showing your wife’s drawings and paintings. The lenses are both kind of sharp sharp and soft at the same time. The backgrounds are always looking so good whatever the distance is, this is seldom a lens performances this well. I guess the amount of glass and weight “explains” that. I think your wife does well on camera, someone’s presence and abilities is what conveys the personality. If I can splurge an idea, a short film about her art and ideas behind it I think would turn out really well 😉 Anyhow, great to see your work!!

This is literally the lens I have been waiting for sub 3K, clean but not too clinical, and pleasing focus and bokkeh. I like how it is neural yet somehow has character in its neutrality - idk if that makes any sense or someone can articulate what I am referring to.
