flick it before you pick it. That helps release the spores. since these Morels only grow in special areas, best to seed it where it was discovered. I can’t “wait” for next season. Thanks for the taking us along with the mushroom hunt. 🍄

Here in central Indiana...I was out looking for the yellow sponge morels for a few hours today and found about 20 ...they were mostly all solitary...not in clusters. Didn't find any in the usual hot spot I used to find them. I always saute' them in butter and add a little salt. Yummy !! There weren't any huge ones...very similar to the ones you found. Some were starting to dry up and turn brown as well. Maybe yesterday would have been the prime day to have looked.

Good Hunt and a lot of hiking. Would salt water be better for cleaning or do you just like a little protein with your shrooms. LOL HH TC AL
@Klesh
@Klesh 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe saltwater would help remove the bugs, but the extra protien is actually a good thing. Another reason I don't use saltwater (main reason) is that I use the fresh soak water to spread around to grow more Morels. Saltwater (might) kill the billions of spores, but not sure. Better safe than sorry

@alh.21
@alh.21 4 жыл бұрын
Ty N. If you find them again, it is relatively simple. Just chop them up into halves or quarters, let them soak in water for a few hours to clean them, coat them in flour, then fry them.

Love me a bunch of sautéed morels! Not very good at finding them though. . . I did find a big bunch of hen of the woods a couple autumns ago while golfing. Had never had them before, but heard great things. cleaned them up and sautéed them in butter, but wasn't impressed. They were pretty chewy, and didn't have much flavor at all. If anyone can tell me maybe if I cooked them wrong, or maybe they were just a little past their prime perhaps???
@Klesh
@Klesh 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah the Maitake (hen of the woods) are one of my favorites as well. You can cut them into 1/4" slices and do flour and egg batter, fry in butter. I'm no cook, but that way never fails. Just make sure you cook them until golden brown (almost burnt) is how I like them. If you undercook, they are too mushy IMO

It's possible, but I don't like risking killing off any morel spores in the soaking water. I use the water to "replant" morels, and the salt might? kill the spores.
