Finding the Best ARPG Ever Made: Chronicon

Chronicon is one of the coolest new ARPGs on the market, full of things that make a cynical and foul mouthed guy such as myself full of joy. The game boasts beautiful 2D sprite work, exciting and fast paced gameplay, and some of the greatest itemization in the genre. It also has a lot of little similarities to Diablo 3. So I guess you can't win them all, but with everything considered, could Chronicon be considered the Best ARPG Ever Made?

Van Helsing really surprised me when I played it around 2 years ago. Took a while to really click and started off somewhat slow, but to this day it ranks between, say, Grim Dawn and Diablo 2 for me. Great flow, impactful skills, good variety throughout all aspects of the game, plus great humor and doesn't take itself seriously at all (which is such a welcome change in a genre that usually sports the most generic, idiotic stories you can possibly find). That's pretty much I look for in a ARPG.

Van Helsing is ok. But there are some AMAZING games in the genre. Try Grim Dawn, Torchlight 2, Last Epoch.

I'm pretty sure you can make the auto pickup button use your loot filter. Last time I played I was mashing Q and it wasn't picking up blues and purples.

@@seer6251 The Loot Filter settings also have the option "Radial Loot key toggles Auto-loot", which makes your character auto-loot at all times. You'll still have to come back for items at times because of the drop animation, but you won't have to spam Q anymore :-)

yep you can. also just turn on the circle loot. I started yesterday and picking up those crowns automatically without picking up other stuff. Couldn't imagine doing it manually. Also got the max slot bags already which he didn't have, prob cuz of the sweet loot filter lmao

Before they fixed it it was possible to have constant maxed rage as the berserker, fun when the spells that are triggered and resets your rage triggered constantly :)

played it on close to launch and honestly its one of the flat out best single ARPG experiences i had, the curve is really smooth and exiting, the set bonuses make your character revolutionary, the dev is a one man army if i recall and its amazing

I'm really glad you reviewed this game. One of my faves to grind while listening to power metal. I hope you also checkout "The Slormancer" game. Just like Chronicon, it's draws a lot of inspiration from Diablo 3, but makes more pleasant grinding experience and has cool gimmick, where you get your legendary weapon to make build around from level 1.

This game is so awesome and I wish they had a proper publisher that pushes the game into a season / online multiplayer / closed battlenet ladder system. I think this game would go viral like vampire survivor but instead its running under the radar for most arpg fans. Also wish I could play it online with friends.

What an enjoyable review to watch! Chronicon is one of my favorite games, and in fact, I also didn't like the berserker at first, but that changed as soon as I managed to get a thunder dragon build going. It ended up being my strongest character ever, doing quadrillions of damage with extremely high mobility at the very end-game, and pushed endless anomalies to T600+ until I got bored. The game becomes pretty much D3 at this stage (monsters are so strong and tanky you need to keep pulling them all together and CCing them so you can explode a whole floor at once, otherwise 1 anomaly will take an hour to complete lol), but there's much more enjoyment to be had while you progress to that point. From my experience all builds can clear at least T400+ with proper gearing and grinding. This game is truly a gem and I find myself going back to it from time to time to start a new character and try something new for a couple of days.

Chronicon was a great surprise when it released. With the amount of manpower it had to produce it hits something like Diablo 3 right in the nutsack. And it was a lot of fun.

Loot filter allows for both drop and pick up filtering. At the beginning of the game, the bag space economy can be bad. But towards end game, it gets much better, and keeping auto loot pickup on is fine.

ah this review was great. personally Chronicon is my favourite ARPG made. i absolutely love this game, and for whatever reason i just find it super satisfying to run around and explode the packs. be it the sound, the minor shake (which you can customize), the explosions into glowy gem bits, i dunno...but i love doing it for hours at a time. it doesn't take too long to start to figure things out, and when you do, you can really put together some crazy bullshit. some of the best parts of the game are its options. not just for builds, but settings, and with a built-in loot filter you can run around with an auto-loot radius turned on and only get what you want. also speaking of the farming stuff, yeah you can make builds to farm crystals to make it easier - of course.

fun review , chronicon is quick shallow fun , nice skill build interactions without over complexity . however the visibility gets really bad as your build becomes more involved , wish there were options to hide or reduce player VFX and numbers etc , the emissive stacking becomes so bright cant see anything . your videos and quest thru all the arpgs is epic , please review Din's Legacy it is such a janky game but has some of the coolest gamedesign concepts with ability / character mutations .

Real talk, can I just say that it's insane how massively you've increased the quality of your content in such a short time? I've been checking out some of your earlier videos again the other day and the difference is night and day. The writing, editing and delivery all have improved significantly. It's an improvement you usually see happen over the span of several years, not just a few months. With that out of the way, I have a small question - Do you intend to stick with the ARPG genre indefinitely or do you plan to branch out into other genres as well eventually? Judging by your ratings so far there are a bunch of games I'd think you enjoy. Gothic 1+2, almost everything in the Divinity Series with the exception of Beyond Divinity, Outward, Baldurs Gate, Legend of Grimrock, Monster Hunter and more. Fun Games, but they don't really fit the ARPG Genre.

EDIT: i noticed you never found the menu to filter auto loot so you can just ignore the trash items and vacuum up all the good ones while blasting around the stage like a demon.
