Wolcen is one of those games that no one seems to refer to, like it's an experience without a lot of standout features, or really any good reason to mention it. Almost as if it's just a decent ARPG, and no one would really try to argue that it's the best one ever made. That about sums it up. Oh and it has a bunch of bugs too.
Thanks for watching! If you're a fan of what you've seen here today, more will be coming as soon as possible, so I would greatly appreciate any and all support. A comment, a like, a subscription, whacking the bell, you know, all manner of fun things would make me happy.
And as always I want to extend an enormous thank you to my Patreon supporters. I am forever thankful for your generosity. You can find more bits of me there if you're interested! / seergames

Strength always being colored red actually goes back to the roman times. The ancient gladiators had very few arpgs and the only archetype they had in those was strength, brute force, power and attack. Since the color red was easiest to produce they decided to make every attribute red. Only after the invention of green did they create other archetypes like dexterity, wisdom or german.

it actually goes back to an evolutionary trait, when someone looks red it's because blood is pumping up which means muscles get more blood and in turn they have more strength.

Honestly, it's a testament to Roman engineering that they could even get an arpg to run on an abacus. Super optimized even if the stat systems were decidedly primitive. It wasn't until they fought the germanic cavalry that dexterity was recognized as the base for legit builds.

You have to go to the enneract merchant, then open your inventory over the merchant window, highlight the enneract to sell, and press whatever the sell button is(it's been a while since i played the game). Not gonna lie, those attack animations look hugely satisfying, especially the whip and jump attacks. You might end up having to split the “Best ARPG” into categories, like “Best Itemization”, “Best Combat”, etc. Also, if you’re REALLY dead-set on avoiding Minecraft Dungeons, the Lord of the Rings 2 & 3 games on GBA are actually some decent portable Diablo clones. Regarding Wolcen's early on bugs: I was REALLY looking forward to playing Wolcen with my best friend. We bought the game on release and spent like an hour to try to match up, which just didn't want to work because of server problems. After like 45 minutes we read on Steam that hopping on other servers is a fix. So we both tried different servers, and lo' and behold, after another altogether 1 hour we could finally match up in Ireland. From then on out we played for roughly 40 minutes, plagued by various bugs. Sometimes I couldn't hurt enemies, sometimes he couldn't. Sometimes he couldn't see me, sometimes I couldn't see him. For multiple minutes he didn't receive any drops at all, while I had a full inventory already. We never saw each other actually walking side-by-side, our chars just teleported whenever the server decided to sync us up. After 45 minutes of that mess, for a grand total of 1:45 hours we decided to stop it there and refund the game, just to be sure we are below the 2 hour mark to not give these devs any of our money. If they launch their game like that, they don't deserve a penny.

I replied Wolcen about 4 months ago to try before Last Epoch and Diablo 4 release. I got to say, it was one of the most enjoyable times I had because the combat feels super beefy. If the lategame was a bit more varied and they made a Legendary and Set item overhaul and actually make them cool, not just stat boosts, the game would be bomb and I like the combat in this way more than both Last Epoch and D4. Also the transmog and customization fucking slaps in Wolcen.

The lack of animation cancelling is contentious for some, but I find Wolcen's combat the most enjoyable of all ARPGs and it's not even close. Unfortunately the mechanics and itemization in Wolcen is disappointing. I find the end game no better or worse than LE or D3/4

I played wolcen a few weeks after release when most of the game breaking bugs had been fixed. It was a lot of fun, in particular I enjoyed that rather complex systems with talents, skills and items, that allowed for some crazy synergies. When they released their first big update they forced you to start over, the new end game required you to play on new characters. So I stopped playing and haven't looked back at it since.

The aspect system pissed me right off. I bought Wolcen in early access purely because of apocalyptic forms. I was expecting something akin to PoE ascendancy, a few very powerful build defining passives with cool visuals to go along side them. Never got to see it during early access though and then out of nowhere the game gets rushed the fuck out and the aspects slapped in place of the actual cool system they sold me on. I obviously would prefer a finished product but since it launched unfinished they could have at least delayed the system people actually wanted instead of that trash.

There are ways to manupilate the resources to benefit the one you need so you can full spec into one side and it's a pretty standard resource build/spend setup at that point. I enjoyed it because you can make a hybrid approach, like for example using a gun/sword for range/melee skills respectively and a catalyst for spells allows you to use 2/3rd of all the skills available. Though it has been a while since I played so I am unsure how effective hybrid setups are going into end game now.

I've always found the color-coding of the warrior/mage/thief triad interesting. Red for warriors because, as you said, it's the Angry Color - the color of blood, fire, &c. Thieves/Rangers get Green because they travel the wilderness maybe? Or because they're often hidden, and trees are a natural hiding-place. And I guess mages are Blue because that's the color of the sky and the ocean, which are both big and dramatic and mysterious just like magic. Incidentally, the term 'mana' originates from Polynesian theology, where it basically means the spiritual energy that permeates the world - a bit like the Force in Star Wars (to grossly oversimplify).

Initially I was a bit turned off by the consistent swears. They can be fun, but they generally do not make for high-quality, informative content like reviews of games. A few videos of this series later, I am quickly coming to appreciate the craft that goes into making these. The punchlines are original and creative (I loved “learn how the dictionary works!”), the structure is surprisingly ordered and makes sense with clean transitions from one topic to another, and you actually get a good sense of the game even if you haven’t had any introduction to it other than these videos. Amazing work, man. Subscription well earned. Excited to see more from you!

I'm glad to hear your thoughts! I try to strike a balance with crude language, because I want the sense of these videos to be genuine. I do swear and speak in a similar way in real life, and I have personally been tired of the overly curated and clean review style that so many big KZbinrs use. Back in the day, before advertising and 'business' came into the equation, I think there was greater creativity to video production. Not saying swearing like a sailor is the greatest form of self-expression lol, but it's something I enjoy weaving in to stand out. At the end of the day though, I want to give a general and decent review of each game I play, so I have to be careful how 'crazy' I get. And it sounds like I'm at least hitting the dartboard on that front, so I'm really happy about that. Thank you for your subscription and moving forward I hope I can keep making things you enjoy!

There doesn't seem to be much to aim for except to go fight the same boss again except stronger because level-scaled (I think?). Very pretty game, wonderful atmosphere, punchy combat, etc., but it's difficult to recommend unless you're that weird guy who specifically likes all the positives enough to ignore the negatives. For me the real joy comes in with mixing classes to exploit the Rage/Willpower mechanic. If half your skills generate Rage at the expense of Willpower and the other half do the opposite, then you have essentially infinite mana and can just spam skills constantly. Especially broken thanks to the Catalyst off-hand item type allowing you to mix and match magic and mundane skills. I never even use the basic attack after that point. I feel like a major part of Seer's disappointment is his bad build, BUT to be fair the game spends an age talking your ear off with random plot nonsense and yet never explains how to use its systems. So you're never even told how to use the tools that you're supposed to be experimenting with.

Absolutely! I think if you want a good 30+ hours of ARPG stuff to do, the combat really keeps it fun for awhile. I'm sure you could go on and on of course, it just didn't hook me in that way.

@@seer6251 Yeah I watched your day 2 stream and you said it really well near the end. Fun but mindless fun and there's moments that aren't fun, at least that's what it looks like. I'mma hold off on it, game looks absolutely massive and I'm a Season mode player anyway.

I disagree with a lot of things in this video, but I see your point as to why you feel certain ways about it. For example the gear in Wolcen (especially after the latest updates) is really good, and there are TONs of build defining gear pieces that you can find to come up with completely different/viable builds. Like the gear that allows you to use skills of a different weapon type, allowing for skill combinations that are usually not possible. The problem is that you really have to dig into the mechanics to find this stuff out, because on the surface it seems bland, and Wolcen does not do a great job explaining the fully gear system. The issue is that the rarity system is much different then all of the other big ARPGs so you kind of have to learn what the rarities are, the difference between gear that drop in different mission types...etc. I also thought the gear in Wolcen was boring on my first playthrough but after trying it again, and going deeper into the systems I actually really enjoyed the variety in build changing gear and actually it felt better then a lot of other ARPGs on the market. At this time I do feel Wolcen is a great single player ARPG that just lets players have fun blowing enemies to pieces with various builds and great combat feel, along with a decent but not perfect end game to grind out.
@wolfieinu
@wolfieinu Жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree, his build was extremely bad. (Just use a Catalyst and the Rage/Willpower bar becomes an endless seesaw of damage, never use your basic attack again.) But it's as you say, the game does a bad job at explaining its systems, so if it doesn't grab you and compel you to figure said systems out, it looks and feels generic.

Enjoyed your review, fun I've played a lot of Wolcen (1500+ hours), and I'd like to know what bugs you encountered because at the moment, the game is relatively bug free - more so than some other popular ARPGs (I've played all of them). I find a lot of people say it's got bugs because that's what it was known for on release (and to be fair, some of them stayed in the game for a ridiculous length of time before being fixed). But seriously, what bugs did you encounter since this was obviously a recent play through?
@seer6251
@seer6251 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, all the bugs I encountered were minor, things like models would shake pretty violently if I went into the menu, and a few tooltips saying things like "Ui-skill-1" etc. Finally enemy models would bug out in a few ways, either when they ragdolled, or occasionally things like sliding through walls. I wish I played back when the bugs were way more obvious, sounded like it would've been fun to make fun of. For my experience though, nothing was ruined with gameplay. I guess it did crash a couple of times, but I didn't really pin that on the game itself tbh.

@@seer6251 That's a fair summary. The one serious issue is the rag-dolling, which happens when you have a lot of mechanics like ailments and DoTs, which seem to result in server lag with the calculations
