Finding the BEST ARPG Ever Made: Torchlight 2

Torchlight 2 could be my top contender for the best basic ARPG. It doesn't go crazy, it doesn't try many new things, but it's completely solid in what it does do. But since it doesn't move the genre into any new territory, would it be fair to claim that it's the best ARPG ever made? The answer is possibly, but maybe not, but perhaps, yet nah.

the devs have an "official" respec mod that is easily downloadable. It lets you buy a potion that when you drink it it resets your entire character.

I know the overworld doesn't respawn enemies but the dungeons not only respawn but also level them up to your current level.

I played this game a few years ago, I picked the Engineer class at random and, I had lots of fun exploring the game, the fighting and movement feels good. I didn't feel the need to go through all the difficulties, I started different classes but honestly it just stopped being fun. Maybe I'll try it again with some of the mods I see mentioned here. When I think back at it, it still gives me a good feeling tho

First discovered it 2013 on a net cafe and I immediately fell in love with. Sadly I didn't get to finish it because the store closed down and I didn't have my own pc yet. Went back to it 5 years later and oh god it is as good as I remembered it to be. I still finish it after every 2 or so years, did another full playthrough last year and maybe I'd start another one at start of 2024. A really goated game

T2 is amazing ARPG. It has its flaws (indeed, skills are really hard to get and basically the game starts only at much higher levels when you have already bunch of stuff maxed), but everything that is good - is great. Art direction, sounds, pets, fishing, loot, mobs - cheff kiss.

Enemies do respawn naturally in the game, you just have to pass through 2 or 3 new areas and they'll pop back into old areas without going into multiplayer. Personally I like them not respawning immediately, but I don't remember having an issue being unbelievable on my playthroughs (normal difficulty). Great video!

Are you sure? Maybe in online multiplayer or something. I just did a couple single player runs and I don't remember that happening, and remember not being able to grind extra levels, gear near the end of the campaign.

@@TheJols Yeah, apparently you have to travel to a new city, and then back to the old one, and the dungeons will respawn monsters. Sometimes even the bosses respawn, depends on the boss.

You didn't say in the review but you are suppose to loot all items and send your pet to sell them. You can also reroll the world by making a LAN game (check reroll world) and returning to Single Player (kinda of a pain I know) The good point though is you can stop at any moment when you come back you are exactly where you left. Awesome reviews keep going him degenerate enough to watch them!

I'm also playing Torchlight 3...started it 3 days ago. I have beaten Torchlight 1 and 2 and I loved them. Idk...3 is ok so far but im not feeling the "magic" that I felt in the previous entries. I'm only a level 9 Cursed Captain so maybe it gets better later on

love the review! agreed with the pain of the skill tree / lack of respec being one of its biggest detractors. leveling a character and spending almost no points for hours or burning a bunch of points i can never get back on skills i dont plan on using feels bad

Love this game. It feels like they took some influence from beat em ups. You spam basic combo attacks, get I-frames from certain moves, enemies have telegraphed big damage attacks, build your special meter for temporary power etc.

There is a stash that you can copy to your character that won't flag you as a cheater. The person who created the stash was marked for it. The stash has respec potions for each attribute and skill respec potions.

Not to be "that" person lol, but you do not need to make a runic account to reroll the maps. All you need to to is create a LAN game and check the reroll button to regenerate a new zone. I've been playing an Elite playthrough recently and rerolling for money, levels, and better gear is an absolute must, so I got real use to re-rolling to farm certain things. It still would be nice to have a simpler option in single player to avoid confusion. Either way as always great video! I personally put T2 up there with my favorite ARPGs, that being Titan Quest, D2, Grim Dawn and then TL2. Keep up the great work!

Torchlight 2 with steam workshop makes it extremely fun for me, boosting the loots and level you can immediately zoom zoom to try all kinds of builds! That was my firsthand experience on how much better the steam workshop makes a game, even till this day I remember how much fun I had. After D2.. that void was terrible and then I randomly stumble upon TL2 PLUUUUS the steam workshop *chef kiss*.

The only thing I've ever used fishing for is to turn my pet into the vampiric spider. That's a real boost, IMO. It makes them do more damage, and heal YOU when they hit.

@@seer6251 Yup! IIRC, "easy mode" in TL2 was playing the Engineer with a healbot, putting the Cure All spell on your pet (in the first slot, so they cast it all the time), and feeding vampiric spider eggs to your pet for every boss fight. It basically makes you immortal, haha.

Torchlight 2 endgame hit me so hard, i was so gushing about maps. I dont know how I didnt find out about Path of Exile earlier, I really like that game due to the mapping system. Ofc im not really playing it so much and rather am mediocre at it (I may played it like 2016 or so and then really played it 2018 or so when Delirium League released). And i just saw you also made a video about Sacred, so Ill check that out lmao, but i wont delete my gushing below: AAAAaaanyways my all-time favorite is Sacred Gold from Ascaron Entertainment. I never really played Sacred 2 and especially didnt touch 3 or all other "spin-offs". But Sacred Gold really fucking hit me hard when I found out you can socket Accessoires and Ability-Orbs (or smthin idk) into your gear. Some Rings and amulets have set-bonus or just cant be equipped by your class but you can socket it into gear or weapons and all effects work on there minus the requirements. It was so freaking sick to me. Its a german game, so most of the dialogues and funny lines probably arent really there or working in english. My favorite lines goblin shamans say "Chop their head off i need a new ashtray" but in reality, even in english, they continue to talk german. They also mumble at you saying "Schniepel" what is a child-version name for the male genital. The studio died sadly, their franchise is somewhere in THQ's hands I believe.

I love Torchlight 2, but yeah there are somethings it could've done better at base. The fact that they encouraged modding and had a separate easy to use panel just for it and it being able to run on potatoes and still look pretty.

I played this a few times. Mostly as an Engineer including my first run because if a game has an Engineer class that will almost certainly be what I use on my first run unless the game has a seperate Computer Hacker class (Which wouldn't fit the setting here.) in which case it depends on my mood when I start the run. I also made a couple of runs as a Shotgun wielding Outlander.

For players that don't know. You can re-roll levels/maps making a LAN game, no need Internet connection or account. Create a new game LAN, click re-roll map. But yeah I get the point, you should be able to do it in Single Player mode. Anyway I like that the maps save the state and show enemies dead, instead of re-rolling everything every time like Diablo 2 does. TL2 is more similar to Diablo 1 in this aspect.

TL2 is the perfect ARPG to get someone new (ie: someone who didn't play any Diablo games as they released) into the genre. The mod scene is wonderful, too. It's pretty much the only modded game where I think the mods actually make it better and are super easy to use.

This is the greatest ARPG ever, according to my siblings. I'd leave my Steam logged in when I was at school or work and they'd take turns playing. They always hit a wall around act 3, and would roll another toon so there were always dozens I'd have to sift through whenever I actually wanted to play. Also random thing that always bothered me about the game, they took out the gem system or whatever and the tool tip claims the art "was lost to time..." despite the fact that TL2 takes place like 10 minutes after the first

Despite not being the best Diablo ever, Torchlight 2 is the bar by which all other Diablos should be measured. It does everything so well that to be a good Diablo you have to demonstrably prove "hey I do this mechanic just as well as Torchlight 2 and also I have ponies" or something. And for that I think no matter what Diablo ends up winning this video series, Torchlight 2 deserves to be an honorable mention.

All zones and dungeons re-populate (including enchanter npcs) after visiting 2 other zones / dungeons respectively. No need to reroll world in a LAN game. Idk why this info isn't shared more often, I too discovered this a bit late.

Not sure what you're talking about no respecs though - making a respec potion is super easy and straightforward - unless the Nintendo switch version is different than pc?

Nintendo Torchlight 2 has completely different and revamped UI. Maybe they also added some QOL features, like respec.

Evening tho the only torchlight game I played is torchlight infinite. I still feel that it's needs more depth with animation. Like if you are dual wielding. Instead of spamming one animation action there some be more melee animation along with casting spell. But diablo 3 I always played. You should also try UNDecember too Which it's not bad
