Hey Aaron, to be honest, some people really do need a 1 on 1, mainly to make sure you actually practice! But if you can do that yourself and have the desire, that's the most important part! Also if you ever need any help, I am here. Some students even send me videos from their phones, so that is also good too. Wishing you a great guitar day and beyond!!

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons Thanks so much! I've been a subscriber for a year or two and you have helped my playing tremendously! As a true beginner player who is primarily interested in finger style, you videos have been perfect in everyday. The playing has been much more fun and relaxing!! I still struggle with a death grip on the neck at times but it's a work in progress! :) Safe travels my friend and may you find some peace as you endure your coming journey and may your Mom make a speedy recovery!

@@puppydoc7949 Ahh, the dreaded death grip- could probably kill a horse if you squeezed his neck...ha ha.. I don't think anyone can really play well when they are not relaxed- I certainly don't. And playing on stage I have to go through this whole ritual of what to do's, and what not to do's in order to play well. One of the first things I tell myself is "stay simple" and solid (as opposed to wildly going for it at all times). In other words let the music come to me instead of trying to force something. So I guess this is the relaxation part! Somehow by just being prepped, the shows go a lot better when I'm able to psych myself into the zone. And same thing with studio sessions which can be a lot of pressure. One thing that is always good is to record yourself, and that's something that I did when I got real serious about music. They have these free apps on phones that are really great- back when I started I was using cassette tapes. There's one in particular called Voice Record that has a microphone tilted sideways as their logo. Easy to operate and sounds great- just turned another friend onto this. Most people hearing themselves for the first time may become horrified , as what you hear while you are playing is very different than the playback. But if you are able to be constructively critical of what sounds bad, it's a great way to improve very quick.. you just have to be somewhat scientific and objective with the solutions. Little by little, the degree of errors will diminish if you can systematically work through and isolate the problem areas, but most likely it will overall be timing issues. Timing is really what separates good vs. not so good playing. Anyway, I could write 10 books on this, simply because I live in a studio. Thank you for the well wishes, and of course I am wishing you the best with your Dad as well. See you in a week or so!! bob

I'm 56 and have been putzing around on the guitar for decades but never gave myself the time to learn how to play and understand what I was playing. This is the first guitar lesson video I came across and I'm glad I did. It was frustrating to play at first. I had to keep pausing the video. Then after about 15 minutes of stops and starts my fingers finally knew where to go and it felt great. Like learning a new language. I played nonstop for almost an hour. My arthritic knuckles are aching but it was worth it. Thanks for the video.

THE best, and most patient teacher, I've found on the net, imo. I already played a little guitar already, so for myself? The lessons were well explained & laid out. I can see where maybe there could be slight confusion, if a true beginner, but if you just put in the time? You'll get it, and it will stick with you for as long as you continue playing- if you take years off? Plan on starting again- but it will be MUCH easier, and will come back fairly fast. I was hoping all was well with you Bob, as we both had some difficult situations in our lives, yours w/your wife, and I lost my son back in July 2018, along with all the health issues I've been dealing with, a few years before that. I've just started getting back into it all myself- and I sure hope we'll get to see you every so often, even if it's not for any lessons, but just to say "Hi", & that all is well. Take Care brother. You've helped so many people, even more than you'll ever know, and all of it, out of the goodness of your own heart. Something which I will always be forever grateful for! God Speed!

Hey Rick! It's always so great to hear from you and hope you are doing well! Yes, I don't know how many times I've gone down the guitar rabbit hole only to realize that I was doing something wrong to start. As it turns out, I'm having to adjust my flatpicking and the way I hold the pick. Bad habits are indeed hard to break!! But then you realize that it's making it so you can't move ahead. By that time you have no choice but to make a difficult alteration. So sharing this info is based on "what I should have done" and glad I am getting to some people who will be happy they got used to it the correct way. Life if full of tough events and now I have to get on a plane and visit my birthmom as she is very sick right now. It all makes one realize (as I know you know) what's really important in life and what's not. Anyway, wishing you many happy hours of guitar along with everything good in life as well. Hey MsQuisch , ha ha... yes, I knew this would help as I did receive these questions over the years and thought inserting another video into this series would help. It's funny but a few people complained about the lessons being "too beginner"... But the tile does say Fingerpicking For Beginners" ha ha.. The origin of this picking pattern was popularized by Merle Travis and basically this pattern is called "Travis Style Picking".. It is interesting to note that Merle only used his thumb and index finger to do this pattern... But there's other patterns and techniques where you are going to use the 3rd finger. You see that a lot in classical fingerstyle. Wishing you a great day and thank you! bob

Hey Walter, thank you for taking the lessons here and the interesting comment. I'm not sure I totally understand as classical usually follows strict guidelines to play a piece exactly as written whereas with this style, we are learning a basic rhythm pattern that works very well for backing a vocalist. Once we start to get more advanced (melody + the rhythm), this is where the two style use the same technique to play both parts. Chances are, you will never see a classically trained guitarist reading a chord chart. I hope I answered your question? Wishing you good guitar 2024! bob

Hi Anis Tito, it's great to hear from you and it sounds like you are making great progress with your guitar! So ultimately you want to look at your chord hand, but I know when you are first starting out it's difficult to take your eyes off the picking hand! Besides just doing a lot of repetitions, a good exercise is just to play the picking part without any chords and try not to look at it. When you can do that without looking, that means that your hands are remembering how to do it and probably ready to give your left hand your full attention (so hard to think of two things at once!). I hope this helps!!!! and keep me posted on your progress. Wishing you a great guitar week and many thanks for taking the lessons here!! bob

@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Manel, thank you for taking the lessons here and let me see if I can help with this question... It's a good one! So, there's very different sounds to chords as a regular D chord sounds different than a Dmaj7 chord. But depending on the song itself, it might be that a regular D chord will work instead of a Dmaj7. What song are you talking about? I can listen to see...

@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons First of all thank you for replying to my comment. Here is the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3LYoYFrnMxpnqM wanna know if I can replace Dmaj 7 and C#m7 by other chords because I'm a beginner and I wanna play this song.
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons 3 жыл бұрын
@@manelsahnoun6997 nice song, but you have to be able to play Barre Chords (unless you have a capo!)... if you have one, place it on the second fret.. that F#m chord would then be an Em position chord, and the Dmaj7 would then be a Cmaj7 position chord (regular C chord with your index finger off the second string). The C#m7 would be a Bbm7 (take a regular Am position chord and slide it up two more frets but don't play strings 5 and 6). With the capo, it's easy to transpose the chords, just count two notes down from the original chord, E F F# G G# A Bb B C C# D Eb (F# becomes E , Bb becomes A, C# becomes Bb , E becomes D etc) then change the chord to the appropriate chord designation such as major, maj7, minor etc. Without the capo, you can substitute is the Dmaj7 chord which is your index finger barring across strings 1, 2, and 3 on the second fret. C#m7 could be two different positions- (i'm picking these two but there's more- these are the easiest but they have limitations: 4 frets up with your ring finger 5th string, two frets up with your index finger barred across strings 4 3 and 2, and your pinky finger 4 frets up on the 3rd string. Limitation being you can't pluck strings 1 and 6 or 2 fret up middle finger second fret, 1 fret up 3rd string index finger, 2 frets up ring finger second string. Can play the open 1st string E but you can't pluck strings 5 and 6. One last thing, and this may be a while but I am taking requests: Go to this video and you can make a request. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKe1aIZ_a5yjjNk You can see that I have a lot of requests but what I will do is show the easiest way to play a song and use what's known as a plug and play pattern which is an easier way to learn the basics of a song. Hey M Zieg, great to hear from you and thank you for taking the lessons here. I don't know how much time you spent on this one video, but I generally tell everyone to slow down and get one part at a time correct first before moving ahead. Some people can move ahead quickly while some people move a lot slower. But no matter how fast or slow anyone learns, the basic idea is to get in the reps and enjoy the process. If that's what you are currently doing then I say you are doing great. But if you are struggling though and not having any fun, please let me know because I can help. So the first question I have is and since you are on this lesson 1A, how did you do with lesson 1 of Fingerpicking For Beginners? Let me know okay... wishing you all the best on your guitar! bob

What is finger picken? I understand chords strumming notes. Fingerprinting, what is the concept? Instead of strumming a chord stright down you just pick a chord top to bottom note at a time?
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons
@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons 9 ай бұрын
Hi Tommy, thank you for taking the lessons over here and yes, you are correct about the fingerpicking.. Fingerpicking in it's simplest form is playing a chord and picking notes from that chord in series (one or a few notes) instead of strumming. The advantage for learning this method for a beginner is- we get to pick and choose what notes we want to play and oftentimes, don't require "full standard chords" on the left hand. For beginners this means you could be playing something musical quicker without having to struggle so much on your chording hand. A more advanced guitarist can also play the melody and rhythm at the same time which means, it's more closely related to what you can do on the piano (with the left hand playing the bass notes and chords, and the right hand playing the melody). If you are just starting out on the guitar, I hope you will give this a try. As I go through my courses here, I raise the bar up a little each time and start to introduce you to the full chords that you will be able to strum as well. Wishing you a great 2024 on your guitar!! bob

Thank you C A... I just got home and I wish I had better news, but she's not doing well. Fortunately she is not in any pain and maybe that's how your prayers are being answered.

This does not match the first video. The first video pattern started on string 5. I couldn't figure out why this was confusing me. I went back and saw your string chart doesn't match first video.

Hi Jaloney, thank you for taking the lessons here and sorry for the confusion! So in lesson 1 which is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGjbnpKgqrOWhrs the chord is an Easy D chord as I call it, or technically a Dsus2 chord. One easy way to remember which string to pluck as our very first note in this pattern is- each measure starts on the lowest Root Note of the chord we are playing as the root note always is the same name of the chord we play. So for a D chord, it would pluck the lowest D note on the guitar which is the open 4th string. If it were an A style chord, then we would pluck the open 5th string (lowest root A note). a G chord would be 3 frets up on the 6th string (G bass root note) and an Em chord would be a E note open 6th string. So I'm hoping that makes sense!! Please get back to me as there's got to be some mistake, maybe you were watching another video or didn't see it clearly (I used an old camera back then). In the link I gave above, just go to lesson one and you will see we are alternating between strings 4 and 3 with our thumb starting on string 4. I wouldn't move ahead until you get this part right as you will be playing the wrong strings that are intended for the song we are learning in this series. Please let me know okay.. Thanks and have a great guitar day!! bob

no but you changed the strings! there was no string number 1 in there. the counting is the same but very confusing that you changed the strings

Hi Oana, very sorry for the confusion! I think a lot of people didn't see me play string 1 and that's part of why I made this video, so I apologize for that. But I am 100% certain of playing that string 1 as that gives that D chord the sus2 sound that most any experienced musician would immediately recognize. If you are a visual person, you can go back and notice my middle plucking finger moving.. that's the finger I'm using to pluck string 1- Again I apologize but I hope this clears things up. So the pattern is - 4 rest 3, 2, 4, 1, 3, 2 for this Dsus2 chord (two fingered chord playing a total of four strings). In the lesson 2 of this series, we are going to do an easy A chord and will have to switch the strings we pluck. It's the same pattern, same movement but it does take some time to get used to changing the chords. I hope this helps Oana and wishing you Happy Holidays and a great guitar year 2022! bob
