Hi Lily, Would you send a photo of your skipped stitches? It is probably the needle. Use an ELx705 needle for coverstitching. I’m new at using a serger and coverstitch machine. In,earned how to use each a few weeks ago. I just bought a used coverstitch machine. For some reason, I can’t pull out my project when I come to the end. It’s like the machine ate it. It reminds me of when your thread makes a nest on the backside of whatever your working on. I tried it twice and it’s doing the same thing each time. I have to really pull very hard to get it out..to the point of almost tearing my fabric. I had to cut the threads very close to the feeddogs instead of properly as you just demonstrated. The machine seems to working fine other than that, which is a big problem. It’s a Janome 1000CP

Sis Carmichael it sounds like the last stitch hasn’t completely formed and is resisting being pulled. Turn your handwheel toward you to finish the stitch. Then raise the needles to the highest position and continue the process as shown in the video. Another alternative is to have a scrap piece of fabric to stitch onto right from the end of your project fabric and clip the threads from that piece. But I think the first method is better. Great video, I have had my serger for years and only now finally getting around to using it for anything besides edge finishing things So, my question is this, the double sided fusible web you use, what kind did you use, and does it wash out to leave the fabric soft and allow it to drape as it normally would? I am trying to do this on sunscreen swim shirt sleeves that need to be shortened. Thanks again so much!

Hi Rayne, It always makes me happy to hear that someone is expanding their serger horizons! For the double sided fusible web, I used SewKeyse tape. It is available in my web store. It doesn't wash out and does cut down the stretching on a hem. If you want a product that does completely wash out, I suggest Wonder Tape. It's available in large chain stores and your favorite sewing center. It's 1/4"-wide so it's wide enough for cover stitching. Let me know if you have more questions and I'll be happy to help. Do you sew with your left needle on the very raw edge or the raw edge is between your 2 needles?

I used to stitch with the left needle left of the raw edge, but it often caused tunneling. The better way is to have both needles on the double layer. Hi Gail I have a Ovation serger shame on me haven’ t used in a long time question my Nieghbor is in a walker and needed a pair of rayon shorts shorten should I use the blind hem foot and what stitch length and tension should I use hoping to have the same results as you .thanks again for any help you can offer , Alice in Fl.

Hi Alice, You don't need the blind hem foot. A seam guide is helpful but not necessary for a nice finish. Measure and cut the hem to 1-inch wide. Use a narrow coverstitch with the stitch length set on 3.0 - 3.5. (It depends on the weight of the fabric. Test on scrap fabric first.) Keep both needles in the double layer of the fabric to prevent tunneling. If the rayon is stretchy, you may need to increase the differential feed setting, but if it's woven, set it on "N". The tension settings should all be on normal settings. Always test on scrap fabric to be sure your stitch looks good and that your settings are correct. Let me know if you need more help. 😩thats not what the title of this video says. I want to know how i can bind around very tight round small edges where i have to stop constantly to position the fabric to reach the binding because its such a tight sharpe turn without skipping stitches. I only skip stitches when i have to stop and position. Its impossible to just run it all the way through in one go because its just too tight and small (i cant fit an industrial machine in my tiny sardine can home). Please someone help me.

@@GailPatriceDesign i am using a janome coverpro 2000cpx sewing polyester lycra (so it can be sublimated) size 0-3 mth onesies envelope using binding attachment. When i get to a very steep curve i have to stop sewing lift foot with needles in so i don’t skew the alignment and turn enough that the fabric can reach the binding without stretching so i dont cause puckering. But everytime i stop it skips stitches. Brand new needles (machine only allows 80 & 90 nothing else i do think 75 stretch would be better but this machine don’t make them). I can’t run continuously through its too round and small for that. I cant afford an industrial either.

@@Moneybags8989 you must leave one shoulder seam open when using a binder or else you’ll have the problems you’ve already had. Stitch slowly and keep the neckline touching the binding strip as it travels along. I do have 2 Tip Clips on binding. They will help you-thanks!

Hi Nancy, When flat locking in the round, you'll have to stitch over side seams. This might cause irregular stitching. Hand walk the machine in these areas. As you approach the first stitches in the "home stretch", also hand walk the last few stitches. When stitching is complete, raise the needles to the highest position. Raise the presser foot and loosen the needle and looper threads enough to allow you to easily pull the fabric out from under the presser foot. Clip the threads. Pull the fabric flat and press with a press cloth. Hope that helps, but let me know if you have more questions and thanks for watching!

I am doing this technique exactly as you laid it out and my stitches are still completely unraveling. When I test this on a straight piece of fabric, the stitches lock in fine, but when in the round, they all pull out. I do not know what I am doing wrong.

HI Suzy, I have a feeling that the needle threads aren't pulling to the wrong side of the fabric. Before you you "snap" the fabric from under the presser foot, are you snipping the needle threads and leaving enough length (about 4") to pull to the under side? When the needle threads are pulled to the underside, that's what locks in the stitches. If you would make a couple of samples and send pics, I might be able to troubleshoot better for you. Gail, I've just used this method but after removing the fabric (snip, snap, snip) the last few stitches are too tight from the pulling out, and because it's locked I can't loosen them. How can I stop this happening again please? I may unpick and redo this part of the hem.

I’m wondering if your needles aren’t up quite all the way and keeping the thread tension tight. Try it on scrap fabric and turn the hand wheel toward you until the needles are at the highest point. Then pull the thread straight back. Let me know if that helps. Also if you pinch the last stitch between your left thumb and index finger as you pull, it will also help. Bridget Bircher hi Bridget, you can stitch the same width as shown with the Ovation or Triumph. You have 3 needles so with C1, C2 and C3 threaded, you’d have a triple coverstitch. With C1 and C3 you’ll have a wide coverstitch. With C2 and either C1 or C3, a Narrow coverstitch. If you need more help let me know. (The only factor that determines stitch width in coverstitch mode is needle position.) You can stitch any width hem you desire. For perfect results, use a fabric guide.

My machine is a combo-overlock and coverstitch capable. A coverstitch machine has one looper-the chain looper and can create wide, narrow and triple coverstitching (if it has 3 needle positions) as well as chain stitching.
