In this video we show you how to make and install your own DIY basement ceiling that is 100% accessible. It is accessible like a dropped ceiling but it is not dropped. It is recessed into the I joists so it has a nice finished look and you will not lose any height with the ceiling like you would if you installed a dropped ceiling. This project was less than $100 and was extremely easy to install! We ended up painting this basement ceiling black and love it!!! Good luck on your DIY basement ceiling and hopefully this idea helps you! Thanks for watching another Collins Country video:)

The ceiling idea is genius. Even if you have regular wooden beams, you can attach some 2"x2" boards along the bottom edge, and lay sheetrock on these 2x2's. A person can even attach a board that extends past the edge of the drywall and have the drywall flush with the bottom of the ceiling beam.

I did my parents a favor putting in a drywall ceiling while they went on vacation. Had a buddy help, but wow getting drywall mud on a ceiling, the endless sanding, waiting for a day or two in between coats before sanding...I was wiped out and pledged to never drywall a ceiling EVER again. It sucked for sure, but looks pretty good.

this is genius !!!!! I don't have i-beams but normal 2x10 joists. if ANYONE has a clip of what they mean by using 1x2 or 2x3 as framing for normal joists, please let me know... I at least need to see what this looks like... I'm a visual learner. fantastic job and thank you for posting Mrs and Mr Collins. I can't wait to cut my existing drywall down. We are glad this is helpful to you. With existing 2 x 10 joists you could screw some 1x4s or 2x4s to the bottom of the joists to use as lips to hold the drywall. 1x3 could work too but wouldn’t give you as much of a lip to hold the panels. Good luck!!

Don't mean to rain on your parade ... and the ceiling does look AMAZING! Just thought I'd point out that floor joists have a top that is constructed to deal with compression and a bottom that is made for tension. If installed upside-down, as yours seem to be (at least some of them look like they might be) they're not able to deal with forces nearly as well. Just be careful where the piano goes on your main floor. 😜

You can still do this with standard joists, just add a 2x3, 1x4, or similar board to each joist to form the lip. I plan to do this as well as pre-sanding, filling, and painting the boards before they go up so I only have a little touch-up from nail holes to worry about afterwards.

What thickness drywall did you use for the ceiling. I did the same thing with 1/4 plywood on my basement ceiling, however the drywall looks easier to cut and lift into place.

Hey! We used 1/2 inch drywall. We loved the drywall because it was dirt cheap and easy to cut and easy to install. Over a year later it still looks flawless.

Thank you for the quick response, may I ask why the flat black verses a satin paint so it could be cleaned easier? I am about to start a project once we close on our new home. The basement is 66 feet long and 28 wide, what a open/blank pallet it is!@@CollinsCountry

Hello! Good job! How do you get pass any copper hose in the basement
@CollinsCountry
@CollinsCountry Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for watching. If the copper pipes are in the way you will likely have to recess them in between the joist or try to relocate them. Turn water off and buy shark bite fittings and it will make easier job. Other option would be to get really creative and come up with ideas to where you don’t have to relocate them but possibly box around them. Good luck. Hope this helps.

I am doing the same for ceiling. Have a question on insulation. Which insulation you guys used for the ceiling and how much did it help in sound proofing?
@CollinsCountry
@CollinsCountry Жыл бұрын
We used fiberglass insulation. It does help with the hollow boomy sound from the bass but does not limit the sound completely to the floor above. I would likely hate it with out the insulation. That being said there are better sound absorbing insulations out there that are more expensive such as rock wool insulation and denim insulation. Good luck
@CollinsCountry
@CollinsCountry Жыл бұрын
One other tip. Sometimes the drywall panels can vibrate with bass sounds so when installing insulation make sure there is slight pressure pushin down on the panels to keep a tight seal against the lip of I-joist.

Hi! What size of the nail did you guys use for those 2x3s? Thanks!
@CollinsCountry
@CollinsCountry 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. I used 2 inch trim nails out of my dewalt trim nailer except where the projector will hang. I used 3 inch decking screws where the projector is for added strength. If you do not have a trim nailer you could use just screws. The nailer allows for exact placement of the 2x3s.

@@CollinsCountry Hi Im also wondering how did you secure the supply air register above drywall? Thanks!
@CollinsCountry

@@oliverpan2353 I used steel adjustable brackets. The supply lines just sit on top of them. Any big box store should sell them near the supply line HVAC stuff.

How did you all make the panels accessible still when they have light fixtures in them?
@CollinsCountry
@CollinsCountry Жыл бұрын
These lights are removable. There are spring clips that hold the light in place. The light actually unplugs from the electrical box and the panel can be removed. It’s super easy and very convenient. I need to do another video showing all this. We will be working on that soon.

@CollinsCountry Жыл бұрын
+Kimour Chi 9 feet. We had them pour 9 foot walls when we built our house because we are tall people and didn’t want to feel squished in our basement. But, this would be fine with 8 foot walls as well because it doesn’t drop your ceiling down. That’s what’s nice about it! I hope this helps

@CollinsCountry
@CollinsCountry 2 жыл бұрын
+Asa Trujillo Hello there! I’ll simply explain the ceiling for you. Technically you’re correct. It didn’t cost less than $100, it actually cost less than $50:) This ceiling is made out of 1/2 inch drywall that we cut into pieces and slid up over top of the lip of the i joists. We then painted everything black. Where we live in Kentucky, this drywall is $8ish per sheet of 4ftx8ft drywall. We used less than 5 sheets of drywall. In regards to your clickbait comment- some youtubers have to use clickbait for viewers to watch their “fake” videos. This method has ruined it for those of us that actually make real and helpful content with actual facts on our thumbnails… For us it’s not clickbait, it’s the truth. Our goal is to help other DIYers out there:) I hope this helped clear it up. If you have any questions please let us know:) Also- there is another video of this ceiling on our channel if you need to watch it. Have a good night!

@@CollinsCountry In Canada its $21 a sheet for a 4x8. For the bathroom it's called Aqua board 4x8 sheet it looks blue on the one side it is the only gyproc that can be used for bathrooms and is mandatory building code here in Canada. It's mold and mildew resistant in case of water leaks should ever happen. The aqua board is $31.00 a sheet. We needed 7 in our bathroom. Looks like you used regular drywall panels in your bathroom. I don't know what your building code is where you live but something to look into, as it doesn't cost $8 a sheet anywhere. You still used material that cost money at some point I agree there is no way this was less than a $100 and is deceiving to someone who doesn't know anything about construction. 🪵 Lumber here is like gold since covid and at least 60%-80% more than pre-covid era. Would be nice if all you tubers were honest about the real cost. Some will say a certain remodel cost them $200 and then they finally say 90% of stuff was given to them for free. Sure it only cost them $200 but in actuality IF they had to buy ALL of the products needed for the project would have cost over $2500. That should have to be stated in the first few sentences of a video.

Collins Country. I’m actually really close to finishing my version of this ceiling. I used 5/8” drywall cut into sections. My room is 12’ wide, so I used 3 4’ sections across each bay. I cut 2x3 wood to his the seams of them boards. To finish it off I had 1/2” plywood cut to 4” wide strips. And installed that over all the 2x3 wood showing from the rafters. Then I used a router to give it all a profile edge. Finally I paint the drywall light grey. The 2x3s black and the trim boards white. Gives it all a coffered ceiling look. I’m not sure if I can send you pictures on here.
