This is the best approach, from a project perspective. Tear down one part, do it, then move to the next part. For example then do one wheel arch, then the other, then the engine bay. And it also spreads the cost, while you maintain the car functional. What most people do is they tear down the entire car, then the whole task overwhelms then, costs start piling up, and eventually the car never gets done.

A little tip for the seam sealing in 11:00 and onwards: If you put down some painters tape you have no problems with smearing the seam sealer. As soon as it gets a little tacky, you can remove the tape and have perfect lines :)
@djlawris
@djlawris 2 жыл бұрын
also if you wish to make the seam even better, before smoothing, put a finger in a very soapy water (i am using a general dish washer). Then it is easier to even out the sealer.

I had a 1988 528e aka E28, it was the same color, too. In the US the ‘88 528e was a one year only regarding timing belt. All before and after were timing chain. I regret not having the belt changed the day I bought it. 6 weeks later, on the way to the mechanics to have it done, it snapped, bent valves, ripped one valve head off, and board a hole through the piston. Sad to say it went to the crusher. I miss that car, but I’m glad to see you making yours all happy again.

Super goof to watch you, how you rock it. Thanks for that. Reg the blind (glass) frontlights, you can fill them with COREGA TABS and water, and leave it overnight. Then empty and flush with de-mineralized water and let it dry.. They ll be clear again.

if im not mistaken, the OEM anti gravel spray is a 2-k Poly urethan based "foam". they stopped useing it because of health and enviromental concerns.

@Memphis: 3M produces a label adhesive remover that is very effective in penetration and removing adhesives from any surface. I believe it’s base chemical component is a terpene derivative. It is an environmentally safe solvent used in in a variety of industrial and non-industrial applications.

Great job, Memphis. That looks amazing. I have used spray on rubber stone guard before, and the texture I got was very close to that factory finish. I have used on hidden areas that are subject to stone damage. I have also used it on surface areas that had been coated at the factory, such as the lower wings behind the wheel wells on a 79 Ford Thunderbird. I have also used it to create a barrier between dissimilar metals to prevent a galvanic response, such as under metal trim. For that, I outline the trim in chalk, lightly sand the area under the trim, spray that area with the stone guard. After there is a good couple of coats, I prime over the stone guard, then paint on top of that. By the time the trim is back on, the stone guard is invisible. The neat thing is that the rust stays so invisible it simply does not return. The results are almost magical. This has proven itself on my daily driver, my 607,000 km 1990 Volvo 240 DL Estate. There is zero rust under the trim after 31 of our snowy, salt-laden winters. I can't wait to see the rest of the project. I also cannot wait to get going on the restoration of my old Volvo before it goes on an 11,000 kilometer trip to visit my brother followed by a 5,200 km drive to Belize where I plan to retire.

First of all, if this antigravel product is based on PU (polyurethane) it is made for paint overspray, but first you need to apply acrilic primer for chemical enclosure, then arcilic base coat, and over all this clear varnish ;)

Really enjoyed this video, the editing, narration and general production quality was excellent which matches the workmanship on the E28, wow the results are amazing, it's taken several years off it. This brings back memories of when I did exactly all of this on my 525e about 20 years ago. Everything is logical and straight forward to rejuvenate and comes up great. Very systematic approach by Memphis. That engine sounded very sweet and healthy as he pulled the car out. Really looking forward to the engine bay detailing and the timing belt, camshaft and crankshaft end seal replacement episode.

I’ve driven one myself and really enjoyed it; New car, dealer to dealer exchange at night. A worthwhile project car. 👍🏽👍🏽 I’ll be interested to see it with a cleaned up engine bay when you have time to do it.

Just one notice from me, for the front end of the cars use a real paint (compresor and spray gun means, because i saw you can use it ! ) because the front of the cars accepts damage from the road and the paint from spray is a lot weak , i made the same thing and after one drive on the highway i realize my mistake :) Best regards !
