Its good to see someone else struggling with drilling screws into sheet metal! Slapped a chicken coop, duck coop, and a version of sheep shelter together this summer and I'm over siding things for awhile!

Tails is a really cool looking rooster. Love how he struts out to the bowl. The crowd cheering sound clip made me laugh out loud in real life. Thanks for the mention, can't wait to see what you come up with for the wheels. Whatever works, especially if you don't have to throw more money at it.

Your 4 sheep drinking from that troft how many gallons is it and how long does it take for them to drink it down
@TheGrassfedHomestead5 жыл бұрын
50 gallon I think. I'd have to fill it every other day during the summer.

What you do is put two wheels on the end without the handle or put an axel there and have one pair of wheels for everything you will need to move. I forget who it was but someone I saw had two wheels to move all their chicken tractors. They put the wheels on to move them then took them off and used them in another one. With 2 wheels you should be able to move that pretty easily.

Looking good G-Man!! I think you made your shelter look fine and I think if will be just fine until you can come back and fix that roof. But you may just want to put your braces under the roof and screw to them before you go and spend all that money on new metal. Test it out and just see what happens with the snow load.
@brianphilbrook52628 жыл бұрын
Good work👍. I think the wheel setup on my 6x8 chicken tractor would work good on that. It only uses two plastic lawnmower wheels. If need be you could make it four. I could send you a video tomorrow if you want.
@TheGrassfedHomestead8 жыл бұрын
I won't need it for the shelter (you'll see why in tomorrow's video) but I sure would like to add wheels to the my tractor. If it's no trouble to send a video, I'd appreciate it.

If you do have to use roofing or sheet metal again, consider getting a metal-cutting blade or disk for either a saw or a disk grinder. It makes cutting metal much faster and easier. I'm fond of using a grinder, but a jig saw, circular saw or even a reciprocating saw would work.

That electric premier fence didn't stand a day with my sheeps, they knocked it down 3 times during 2 hours. I do respect ur sheeps for respecting that fence lol
@TheGrassfedHomestead3 жыл бұрын
You have to train them first before relying solely on the electric fence.

Is there a junk/scrap yard in your area? You could probably find something suitable there on the cheap.

I know this video is a little bit old. But seriously how much compaction can you get driving your pick up on your field once in a while I have several acres and drive mine and I don’t have a problem. And you can buy cheap wheels at Harbor freight

probably not a big deal if done infrequently

Great dual functionality. I like the idea sheep house/Dino shelter. I might look for 2ea 8 inch wheels. make axle to slip under the shelter frame then roll it to new location remove the axle. or permanent mount 4 wheels to frame. OR get 2x12 cut wood IN CIRCLE paint them drill holes bolt to frame using washers to allow wheels to turn. the wood wheels can be mounted inside so metal is no a problem. you get two years out of wood wheels. but you must park building on dry surface by using square wood blocks under wheels.. pressure treated wood is best.
@TheGrassfedHomestead8 жыл бұрын
Wood wheels! I love it! Of course, I have no idea how to cut a circle. I guess I need to search for a youtube video on that ;)
@goldencroaker97188 жыл бұрын
use your truck. we drove trucks in our fields and never had a issue with compaction. just make sure the soil is dry.

If you hang more thin sheet metal in the future, you might try tacking it up with a staple gun then pre-drilling your screw holes--much easier than trying to do it one-handed.

There's some yellow foam stuff in the paint dept. at Home Depot with which you can seal that gap between the sheet metal and the frame. Just don't eat it. Also, Happy Birthday. I bought you a card but I've had the crud all week, so things have been moving slowly. I'm sure you'll douse it with lysol upon arrival.
@TheGrassfedHomestead8 жыл бұрын
Ha! I use vinegar to disinfect. Lysol is yucky. Thanks for the tip regarding the foam. It doesn't need to be sealed, though. It was just for aesthetics that I wanted it tucked under.

Have you factored in the cost and pain of a back injury or a sprain, the lost time, and alternative plans if someone becomes injured? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I hope no one strains a muscle or pops a disc.
@TheGrassfedHomestead8 жыл бұрын
Great question Joan. I put the handles low so with our arms fully extended, all we have to do is use our leg muscles and stand up. No strain on the back or arms. As for a sprain... I suppose that's still a risk. Lots of turmeric and comfrey!
@JoanDenoo8 жыл бұрын
That is good. I like the shelter, you did a good job of design and building it. You have a right to feel proud. I have a son and son-in-law with serious back energies that resulted from their work. Take very good care of yourself.

@TheGrassfedHomestead6 жыл бұрын
If you mean our perimeter fence - So far, no breaches that we know of. It is only good for larger 4-leg predators. It, of course, wouldn't keep out smaller chicken predators.

Could just put two tires on the one side and you could each take a front corner and pull together.

Just remember push is a much stronger movement than pull.
@TheGrassfedHomestead8 жыл бұрын
That's why Little Buddy was pushing ;) In this case, pulling was the way to go. We had to lift one end slightly to reduce friction. We couldn't have effectively pushed when lifting like we did. Also, if we could've pushed after lifting, all the weight would've shifted to the front skids which would be digging into the ground.
