Still wishing Hartwall would start importing to more of the US. This version is okay but I like the mouthfeel of the original better.

@ThereCameAnEcho I've been told that they were not really interested at all until someone else started making it.
@Xerdoz5 ай бұрын
@@finnishyourplate They weren't / aren't interested because of import fees. This version is made in the US so no tariffs or other fees. Not sure how the legislation is nowadays if the fees are still high.

@@Xerdoz I got the original long drink from Hartwall at Marketview Liquor in NY. Long drink like this is available in California.

Longdrink was originally created for Helsinki Olympics in 1952. Original flavors were Gin with grapefruit and Brandy with Pommac. Pommac is popular soft drink in Finland and Sweden made of fruits and berries and matured in oak barrels for three months.

I remember when I was bit younger, we used to go to bars in Finland and there were two varieties of long drink available (lonkero) Gin long drink and Brandy long drink. Memories of the bitter tasting stuff, my Canadian friend's father had gotten some cola (so he thought) on sale and wanted my opinion (everyone in the family hated it) It was Italian stuff, similar to one you are talking about, Brio Chinnoto, popular among Italian immigrants in Canada...it was a surprise when you expected cola flavor.

Yeah I know the feeling! When I first tasted it, I kinda expected cola flavor too based on how it looked...

Well liked, already subscribed and looking forwards for more content! The lemon flavoured Hartwall Lonkero is also something to try if you ever come across it within the States. Enjoyed this new format - thanks for all your hard work!

These are my new favorite drink, have replaced gin and tonics for me. I’d like to find the other flavors in my town.
@finnishyourplate Жыл бұрын
Yeah, these are definitely very easy drinking. I think the peach one was a summertime flavor, so it might not be available anymore, unfortunately.

Now there are several brands making long drinks here in Finland. Most of them are alright, but there is still no real competition against the Hartwall original. Surprisingly, Pirkka makes a decent and cheaper alternative, only with a bit of a bitter aftertaste from the gin I suppose. A le Coq is not bad either, but maybe a bit too sweet with less alcohol in it.
@finnishyourplate5 ай бұрын
They used to sell the Hartwall one in the USA too, but last time the liquor store told me that it's not available any more. This one however is very widely available across the US. I'll see if I can try a few of them when I go to Finland.

I have yet to find this where I live but I’m still searching. I’m intrigued. Is this what Finns traditionally drink when they sauna? This Texas heat has been brutal lately. It feels like a sauna!This sounds refreshing right out of an ice filled cooler. Frosty and ice crystals in the mouth.😋
@finnishyourplate Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah for sure, this is a popular sauna drink. You could always ask your local liquor store if they can get it for you. Sometimes they can get items they don't stock.
@historygal7 Жыл бұрын
I will definitely ask!

Most still have a cold beer or two at the sauna, I prefer easy lagers like Kronenbourg Blanc, or San Miguel. First sip goes to the stove as a gift to the sauna elves who take care if the sauna, also gives nice bread smell. Old tradition...😊

So, temperature there is between 167-221°F? That´s what is normally Finnish Saunatemperature (75-105°C).

When people claim this or that, remember that there are like 10 brands of Lonkero in Finland. Add to this that the original Lonkero from the 50s was made with gin and grapefruit soda, but at some point premixed drinks became illegal to sell in non-Alko stores. The breweries circumvented this by creating a fermented version of the Lonkero. This changed the recipe and thus flavor. It was only a decade ago or so that mixed drinks i.e. non-fermented Lonkero was again legalized for regular stores. I suspect that many default to their childhood memory of how things taste and for many that childhood memory will be of a crappy Lonkero. Also, shout-out to Sinebrychoff for making the shittiest Lonkero ever: Kurko Lonkero. It was cheap and also awful. Gag-inducingly awful. They tried rebranding Kurko to Fresh, but as the flavor of arse filled your nose with every opened can, that name was a filthy lie. I curse their name and celebrate the Kurko brand dying in 2018. The people have spoken and justice served. Rant over.

Also, as a hangover cure during Uni days I would order a Lonkero and a shot of gin and drop it in. This was before black Lonkero with higher ABV. I can and cannot recommend.
@finnishyourplate Жыл бұрын
Funny I was just thinking of Kurko. I never actually had a chance to taste it, but somehow I remember the commercials. It popped into my head the other day and I was wondering if they still make it. I guess not.

The original long drink that is most popular in Finland has 5,5g of sugar in 100ml. It is rather hard to find how much this has that you drink, but i suspect more? And maybe also artificial sweetener?
@finnishyourplate29 күн бұрын
Yeah there's no nutrition information, or ingredient list on the can, as is the case with any alcohol drinks. I suspect the amount of sugar is comparable, I don't think there is any artificial sweetener in it.

Yeah you're right, and I guess pussikalja means just any beer that's carried in a plastic bag, doesn't it? Like for example if you are enjoying a beer on a picnic, but you bring the bottles in a plastic bag.

At the beginning of the video I see a bottle on the left with the letter K on top of the label. At first, I thought the K stood for Kuupaista --moonshine. Later in the video , I see the rest of the label KYRÖ, Finland's best gin according to an internet search. You must have good taste to drink that. I don't think I would be drinking so close to the balcony. The monsieur with the beard, if he stood up, could easily fall over the rail. Floors have a strange tendency to rise up and hit you in the face when you have been drinking too much.
@finnishyourplate Жыл бұрын
Haha we discussed this exact possibility when setting up for the video. I thought it would make good content, but alas it did not happen.
