its not often we see a singer _become_ the song.... Lara becomes the the character... the woman in despair... the 1st time she says "malade" her voice is small and frail... the 2nd time its a wail of despair... and we're right there, in that room with her, bearing witness to this circumstance and how it is affecting the character she is portraying.... and it is 100% real and believable.. An outstanding example of emotive artistry...

The best singer\songwriter\performer of the last 30 years. FYI - Always choose live with Lara...it needs to said. "Malade" is a practically the French national anthem. No one does it better. "Broken Vow" (English - she wrote it) is going to ruin your day. "Perdere L’amore" is a powerhouse Italian classic - a masterclass level of song and performance, in perfect Italian, that you will not be able to get out of your head (effortless perfection). "Mademoiselle Hyde" (English, tho she does another version in Russian) is written by Lara and Igor Krutoy the maestro, is, lets say, a slightly more mature version of Lara slaying a beautiful, intriguing, kind of sexy weird song with an almost Arabic feel...killer Lara. "Caruso", another great Italian classic, is flawless and my favorite version of the song ever done including Pavarotti (and that is really saying something). Just her and a piano and she crushes it. The art that conceals art. She presents a very believable breakdown while balanced precariously on a high wire of vocal technique. The winds of emotion rip at her back and forth, but she does not fall off. Her attention to detail is extraordinary; she sings like a little girl before she recalls being one, you wonder why her mother was going out and leaving her, just as the man she is singing about treats her bed like a railway station. Do the people she cares about always go away? She touches her neck tenderly, just below her chin, then sings 'avant ta peau', and we know how rough her lover's kisses are. She exploits the sounds and cadences of French to great effect; I love the bite she gives to 'cerné de barricades', that propels her into her final restatement of the title. These details are everywhere in this song, and she has prepared it meticulously, as an actress would. Little wonder she is almost catatonic after exhausting her last breath, as if this man truly has finally killed her, or compelled her to take her own life. You almost expect to see blood and saliva to drip from her mouth as she finally reaches the end of that last note. It's a stunning evocation of depression, and incredibly courageous of her to bare her grief, and stay with it so unflinchingly. Amazing, and a great response from you, Anna. Check out her 'Caruso', another mesmerising evocation of near-death emotion, sung in Italian that is as salty as the Med. You will love it.

Doesn't happen a lot, but some songs just crawl under your skin. I mainly listen to metal, but this performance is just out of this world. I look at Lara's video at least once a year. And every time she manages to get tears in my eyes with her voice and performance. So much better than the original by Serge Lama who also wrote this song. I wrote this before watching your video because I know the song just gets me every time. And I noticed you were affected by it too. Such an incredible singer she is. Wish I had been there in the audience. I also wish I could speak Finnish, so I could understand the literal words you spoke instead of the English translation. For me, one of the key moments in this song that you haven't mentioned is at 03.11mn on your video when she says "I'm tired, I'm exhausted pretending to be happy" and turns to the musicians. and embraces them with a broad gesture of the arm adding with a hoarse voice "when they are there" exactly like a very unhappy woman who would have drunk a little too much to drown her sorrow (what she said a little before in the song with these words "I drink every night, and all whiskeys, for me, taste the same") and which would create a sort of scandal in the street, as we have all seen that at least once in the street. It's just amazing how she happens like this, just a few words to change her tone like that. You used the expression "emotional roller coaster" and that's exactly it. If you want to spend another very emotional moment on stage with her, then I suggest you comment on "Je t'aime Lara Fabian French and English subtitles" from the "frenchrescue" KZbin channel. You'll again be very surprised by what's happening. It's a very powerful moment, something quite unique on stage with this song. And to come back to this particularity that Lara Fabian has of being able to jump from one emotion to another, I'd ask you to be very careful when she's going to pronounce the word "Satan" and how with a single word she succeeds this "tour de force" to express a very deep feeling. It's remarkable of precision. For me Lara Fabian is a songstress Stradivarius. She can nail you to the wall with just one note. Few singers are capable of this feat, not even Céline Dion. Édith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour and a few others were capable of it. This is where all the art of "the school of French song"; enter into the character you're playing. Hi Anna, I would very much like to add my appreciation for your concise and intriguing review of my muse Lara Fabian! I am a trained operatic tenor myself with 7 years tuition with the president of the singing teachers association Niven Miller, followed by 3 years at the Royal Northern college of Music and then a career in singing of all styles covering over 50 years, on TV, West End shows, and everything else all over the world. Now at nearly 70, I still perform now and again... But I have to confess I am obsessed with 'Katy', or Lara Fabian as she is known. Tonight I have listened to Je suis malade maybe 12 times..? Great analysis. That cry/laugh at the end for me is the most powerful and the most tragic part of this song.. all through out the song I was sure the "sickness" she's referring to is physical, but when i heard that last burst of emotions, that laughter mixed with a cry.... she really sounded and looked like a person who became seriously mentally ill from all that pain and despare.. Shout out from Portugal. Loved you reaction. I lived for a couple of years in Finland and had the chance to get to know (and incorporate) your culture and traditions. To make a long story short, you, in your reations whithin your reaction , tear down all the theoritical concept that nordic people have no heart, are to cold or have no emotional response to sensible subjects. Fact that i come to realise during my staying there. Inspite being a metal/rock inclinated being, i come to realise that some "artists" have that something that you can't put a finger on it. That is the case of this marvelous performer, Lara Fabian, that, no matter of the style of music that she is embodying, she does embody it, like she lived the whole story to the core and makes you believe and feel trough your core that it is real as much it was for her. Remarkable that it's a cover, isn't it? She composes and writes the lyrics (in French, English, Italian and Spanish) for the vast majority of her songs. Yes, please more Fabian reactions! He is a fan of hers, and he covered many of her songs including Adagio, Mademoiselle Hyde, Love is a dream (she worked with Igor Krutoy way before Dimash as well), and they had some duets together despite that she's close to the end of her career. Please react to "Caruso". It's an Italian song that has been covered by many sings including the great late Pavarotti. @@annavaskelainen Before you start on her later work, I suggest you look at two performances predating 2000.Many people have ralready eacted to Je Suis Malade, Adagio, Caruso, Perdere l'Amore, and You're not from here, all from her From Lara with Love concert in 2000. No-one has yet reacted to her 99 Brussels performance of "Dites-moi pouquoi je l'aime". It's in Fremch. The video quality is poor, but the sound is good and I suspect you will enjoy it. Another one is her stage performance of Extrait de Yentl from her "Pure" concert, in which she covers two recorded songs of Barbra Streisand in a non-stop 8 minute live version. Only a couple of reviewers have looked at this one. If you do one or both of these, her fans will love you. What a powerhouse, as you said! Cheers!

I loved watching your reaction to this - you literally picked up and commented on every tiny, little - seemingly insignificant thing that makes this performance out of this world. Lara has of course as amazing voice. But it's the seemingly small things that make it ridiculously amazing. The short, almost weeping breaths she takes at points (when we know very well she knows how to breathe from her stomach but it's all part of the performance), the "growl" when she says "qui chantera..." before the a cappella part like she's disgusted with herself and her voice but has crossed over to the dark side, the crazy laugh after the "je suis malade, c'est ca! je suis malade!" towards the end. Everything. Really love this reaction, and all the notes you pointed out to your viewers. I've watched many reactions to this video but your dissection was top notch

Fantastic! You have a new subscriber for this excellent reaction and analysis! Definitely one of the best I have seen from a vocal coach on this performance, which I think is the best performance of any song ever. It is the ultimate "make the song your own" since this is a cover. I really enjoyed the way you described what you saw happening and the emotions Lara conveys so brilliantly. There is no one else who I will listen to every day, even though I don't speak the language, because it just does not matter. Her vocals cut right through to my soul and she lives the songs to her core, and not just songs of heartache. She composes melodies that are intricate and complex without ever being a show off, her lyrics are poetry, and everything she does conveys something, therefore how she performs from one song to the next is not the same. And she is not just multi-lingual but also multi-genre, as well as an actor and dancer. A lot of vocal coaches have done one or two of her songs and never come back to her. I truly hope you will do more Lara because you clearly "get her", and because you are clearly a very good vocal coach. I watched the video of Anna's version and, wow, she is amazing! I could hear the similarities, but Anna also made it her own in a powerful way, and I don't say that lightly. I'm a pretty harsh judge, and she gave me chills.

First time hearing Lara as well. The first thing that comes to mind is the way she introduces the song in a soft tone and then builds throughout the song to the crescendo similar to Dimash's style of song building. Very nice! Other way around. Dimash often channels Lara. It's truly extraordinary. And I guarantee you that the Lara rabbit hole is the greatest there is. 30 years of writing/composing/performing, not just multi-lingual but multi-genre, sexy, sweet and funny, and a phenomenal human being. The concert this is from is a master class all the way through, but for fun I recommend Tango and Si Tu M'aime from the Nue concert 2002, just to see her other sides.

Salut anna, je suis ravi que aprenne l'existance de la plus grande vocaliste et interprète de la planète ai eu. Pour Barbra Straisand elle est la plus grande interprète, pour moi aussi car toutes les Divas vivantes ou disparues chantent très très bien mais Lara amène son interprétation et sa qualité technique vraiment de haut niveau a des sommets que peuvent faire et cerises sur le gateau elle le fait dans plus de dix langues différentes et là je pense pour le moment il n'y en a pas d'autres, bonne découverte de cette immense artiste , auteur compositeur de beaucoup de ces chansons,les "covers" qu'elle a interpréter comme celui-ci sont à des niveaux inégalables pour n'importe quel chanteur, (Serge Lama l'auteur et l'interprète de cette chanson a pleuré lorsqu'il a entendu Lara chanter"je suis malade" et a dit que Lara avait transporté sa chanson dans une dimension jusqu'alors inconnue, une interprétation techniquement émotionnelle de très très haut niveau, un salut cordial du sud de la France,André
