Whats funny to me is the collision of two worlds here. Inside her head, she is not emotional at all. But in total control, almost dead. Thats whats required if you want to perform like this. This has been practiced to death by her, no doubt. Its only after the piece is done when you see her giving herself a moment to actually absorb what just happened. She was still in the zone.

“Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973. This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …). When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours. The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes. Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad. But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s. At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends. Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations. The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3m2qp5qiKynq7s is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries. The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella. Lara is used to perform the song very differently in each of her tour and for instance this 2003 version is even more dramatic kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaqsfZeIdrSGbpo

I believe it's because of the sounds in our language. The "A" sound for example (and others) can be so strong when sang. We can hear it in this song. When she sings the word "malade" she can do it with so much strenght and emotion, because the sound is "profound" to begin with.

'Soothing' did you say? 🤣🙃😂 Another Master Class by the the great Lara Fabian. No-one does love and loss better. Riding that fine line between precision and sensitivity whilst expertly conveying emotion, yes, with micro-intentional technical delivery. Lara is a story-teller at heart, as well as a great songwriter and lyricist. This is her cover of a friend's song, yet she so thoroughly inhabits the role that many assume this is her own piece. As you point out; her Drama, her body language, is equally nuanced; with those gestures of vulnerability, the staggering forward, as if overcome, the cry breaths, the savage desperation of that line drawn across the throat, even the slight slurring around the reference to whisky. This is a true Masterpiece. * If you haven't already, please see her 'Caruso'. In my humble opinion, I doubt anyone has done it better. 😉👍

Isn't it amazing? We know she is singing in French and most of us have no idea what she's singing about (there are other video's of this performance with lyrics in English) but it doesn't make any difference. We begin to cry during the song because her delivery is so spectacular she draws us into the emotion of the song with her extraordinarily beautiful voice. This video is from one of her Concert's in 1999 or 2000 and the entire Concert is filled with one sensational performance after another. The audience had to be a weary bunch at the end of the evening. They kept giving her a standing ovation each time. When you watch the end of this incredible production, even the piano player is so into it he almost falls out of his seat when he hits the closing notes!

Well said. This was the first song of hers that I ever heard, during a skating routine at the 2018 Olympics. I immediately jumped up and had to know who was singing, even though I didn't understand a word other than "je suis". It lead me to this performance and the greatest rabbit hole in existence. I could listen to her all day, in multiple languages, and not care that I didn't understand the words. To this day I still gravitate to her French songs the most. Hi Beth. I think this is the best performance I've ever seen or heard, but I'm sitting here giggling before I watch your reaction because "soothing" isn't exactly a word I would use to describe it. :D Edit: 4:33 as you're talking about emotion, prior to hearing this Laura Branigan was the most emotional connected and driven singer I'd heard, but this edges her out. "Solitaire", "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You", "Ti amo", and "The Power of Love" exemplify Branigan's ability to embody passion in her singing. I'd start with Solitaire or Ti Amo, if you haven't heard any of them. Edit2: I guess I'm live reacting to you now. 5:32, I can see you thinking "that was ridiculously good". Edit3: yes, the a cappella section is stunning. Edit last: I'm most impressed by the variety she displays in this performance. Whispers to massive belts; rasps and cries to perfect clear tones; speaking sections intermixed with singing; embodying the anguish in the song through her voice, body, and acting; a masterfull singer showing off all her abilities, but in service to the song not ego. Absolutely breathtaking performance. Not exactly soothing though. ;)

Lara is a legend in many countries, known as the 4th member of the vocal "trinity" along with Whitney, Mariah and Celine, and nicknamed as The Ring by professionals due to her unparalleled resonance. She is the idol of Dimash and an inspiration for Diana Ankudinova for instance. You should use this playlist when reacting to this song and other songs from the same legendary concert: kzbin.info/aero/PLV-BfzP9ln4xyPy8l43ag7hd20S9PeNiE It will provide you english subtitles (you will appreciate even more her interpretation skills when you will read the incredible lyrics), much better video quality, mini interviews before the song, and you will see how much she was immersed in the story as it takes her one minute to resurface after it. Final note to say that not only she sings in 12 languages but she also writes songs in 4 of them (french, english, italian and spanish) and many of these have been covered by the greatests from Barbra Streisand, Dame Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban … to Dimash, Diana Ankudinova, Floor Jansen, Morissette Amon, Cakra Khan, Gabriel Henrique, … She just completed a spectacular tour in Canada and Europe a few months ago.

@@BethRoars @Beth Roars Thanks for the note earlier Beth. You are the BEST!!!!!! Mesmerizing our Queen is. You are missing a few Beth (see below). These are from Macadamia who has restored quality sound and video and all have translations (11 languages and all...). kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIGVfKGCmtKHbZo A man's song...supposedly. Not anymore. "Caruso" Done by many many artists, this Italian classic by Lucio Dalla is a great song, beautiful, about the dying days of the great Enrico Caruso. Done by many, but this is the best version, even Dalla agreed. Luciano Pavarotti did it as well and he did it like all the great male tenors did it, swelling on the high notes majestically...Lara takes a different approach and finishes phrases angelically. Simply flat out hauntingly gorgeous. Caruso, was dying young and leaving a young wife and child behind, he reminisces and says goodbye. A tearjerker scale of 11 out of 10. Dalla, the author, visited the hotel where Caruso and his wife stayed sometimes, the very room. In Sorrento. In the song, Lara sings "Surriento"..not a mistake, fully intentional. Surriento is how a Neapolitan would say it and Caruso was from Napoli. Lara. Misses. Nothing. Enjoy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5TQmXacfZ6CnLM "Perdere l' amore" Another Italian classic. Our Queen, long may she reign, crushes it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKLShGCBhLGJlZY "Adagio" In English!!!! Originally a classic piece, no lyrics, written by Tomaso Albinoni in the late 1600's (this is disputed). Lara wrote the words and the rest is history. A song of longing for your love, for the love to come in season. Stunning. A masterpiece. Slayed by Lara. Covered now by many (Dimash, Floor Jansen...), our Queen, long may she reign, casts a spell you cannot get out of. Good luck trying to pause it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXuleHZ_bcaGe5Y "Broken Vow" in English!! Written by Lara. Josh Groban also made it a hit (they are great fans\friends of each other). Here is why. The first link is my favorite version of the song. It is known by heart by everybody in France. Written by Lara, it is a very beautiful song and of course she just charms you and takes you where she needs to take you. The second link some have alluded to here, is a performance where her adoring army of fans sing "we love you' to her while she attempts to sing 'I love you" back. I burst into tears every time I see it. My advice is that you watch this second version last...it is now, in Lara world, a love song between her fans and the Queen. Enjoy.

@@justingamble3876Excellent list of great songs, I like your descriptions! Just to add to the Adagio, it is a love song to the powers of inspiration, begging them to not abandon her. It embodies just how important being a songwriter is to her. When you listen with this in mind, it goes to a whole other level of intensity.

The more I listen to this woman singing, the more I realize that she IS indeed the perfectionist. Besides the flood of emotions, it's how she applies her voice. She knows every corner or angle of this song and, as you say, muscle memory is what helps to when, where and how to apply and place her voice at any given point and perfectly. Mixing speech with the everything else she does is as you rightly pointed out, so difficult to do and still not to interfere with any of the storyline and the emotions thereof. I truly don't know of any other singer who does all of what she does, in any song. I say here what I said elsewhere that LARA really should be crowned the Queen of vocalists. She reigns supreme! ...and you, Beth, have done a great reaction, beautifully and honestly. Thank you for highlighting of the different techniques and dynamics encountered in this wonderfully performed piece of music. Looking forward to the next.❤

OMG Beth your so sweet and so nicely emotional I love your reactions because are totally honest. Once a dearest friend of mine, a wise man, explain me the meaning of that song, he tolds me "imagine to be so deeply in love with someone who didn't give you any attention, you think he is out of your reach, like you don't deserve him, then one day this man decided to look at you and give you somekind of attention, you'll be thinking is like a dream come true and then you discover he didn't care about you, he is only using you for some kind of pleasure without any feeling or love and your feelings are so confused, you are mad with yourself because you still love him, but at the same time your so sad because he didn't loves you as you do, your pain is so strong and deep that hurts also physically....that's is what that song is about". If you watch the lyrics while she's singing, she make a physical interpretation for every word, the gestures she mades are devastating, I can't heard that song without crying, she emotionally drain me.

You stopped too soon...At the end when the audience is cheering you actually see her re-enter her body & come back being slightly shocked realizing oh right I'm not alone here there's a moment in the song where the lyrics speak of her pouring her blood into her lover & she symbolically slits her own throat with her thumb..so powerful

@Beth Roars Thanks for the note earlier Beth. This beloved song has also been done by many. Do not let Lara do your song...game over. Lost love, in middle age, at night trying to be recaptured, rekindled....beautiful song. Our Queen, long may she reign, teaches us how to deal with betrayal. Unfrickingbelieveable. She just kills it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKebiXmOgL2Fgqs "You're not from here" English. Written by Lara. Esoteric...we are not sure if "you" is real or an imaginary love or an ideal. Beautiful. My favorite Lara song. No matter how often I listen to this performance by Miss Fabian (100 times? 200? I have lost track), I am always shaken by how she physically and vocally manifests the "descent into madness" so apparent in the lyrics. She carries that descent to the last note (watch her mouth at the closing sound). This is a masterpiece.

I'm so happy to see you finally come back to Lara, thank you for reacting to this phenomenal performance! I think this is the greatest performance of any song at any time in any place, and is the ultimate example of making someone else's song your own. This concert was part of her introduction to the US audience and the entire thing is a master class. Caruso and You're Not From Here are excellent choices to do next time. And Adagio, her love song to the powers of inspiration, begging them to never abandon her, is so much more than a standard love song. The intensity, the power, the vulnerability, the desperation, it's just incredible and something every vocal coach should experience. It's so powerful and affecting that many others have covered it, but none compare to the original queen. This is how important being a songwriter is to her.
