I love the melodrama of this version but I also love the anger on the official one soooo which one should I choose ? Fuck it, I'm taking both, music is limitless, folks.

I heard this version way before the album came out. It leaked from my bands manager to me and he told me she had just been dropped from Epic... (which did happen). When I heard that news and this song, I couldn't believe it. This version is absolutely my favorite and the record label is a bunch of morons for doubting her and her songs.

Most of the Jon Brion ones have a different dynamic where it is evident that Jon is at the helm of production, and Fiona is taking direction. I can see why she wanted to change it, but the production is so weird on these, it's incredible.

I just spent a lot of time with both versions of this song, which I love so much -- 'the kingcraft of a meritless crown' -- and as much as I love what Jon Brion did, I also know that it was a rough cut, and there are places where the strings are too much, especially towards the end, and the perfect version has some strings but not too much.

I will be forever confused why this wasn't the released version. There is so much power in this. The low piano notes hitting so hard that they're warbling in the chorus is just so intense. This is the only song that I feel deserved to stay on the released version.
@YerpDerp17Ай бұрын
Eh, I can't argue against that, but I feel both serve a purpose and can be argued as better. I think the other version is mixed better, and that the drums do make the chorus punch harder for a more angered/frustrated feeling. But I do love the strings and how the piano sounds on this version.

this is so perfect that way ! this is just the definition of a masterpiece !
@mia-yf8pz4 жыл бұрын
@@ziyedhamrouni886 I think the strings try to make it sound too much like a ballad but that's not the point of the song. I respect that she made her own version that was closer to what she was wanting and was personally feeling. I mean this was written about her personal experience. I do like that the strings sound haunting but I prefer her rapid, beautiful piano playing that also sound haunting in a different way- it almost sounds "unsteady" which reminds me of what the song is about (her unsteady relationship). I think adding the strings and even the echo-y voice dilutes the song's meaning and the power of her voice.

All the snobbyness here is really disheartening, all this bitching about the finished version. She said that she was the one who wasn't satisfied with it, and that she wasn't mentally present to make her own choices about this... the finished version is what she thought was right/chose to put out, how she chose to define herself and her work. She's a grown woman, not some little girl that needs you to tell her ou know more about her work than she does. I mean, it's sort of cool to have this accidental work in progress/see what it could have been like, for the sae of curiosity and artistic study. Of course someone's personal taste is bound to resonate better with this version. But you shouldn't use 'sellout' as a label you fling at everything you don't personally like, and accept that she put out what she did for a reason.

There was pressure from the record company on her to mapke it more "radio friendly" and bullied her to do so. Im really not buying that "she wasnt satisfied with those versions...." No. Its enough to listen to what she did before and after to realize how brave and risky she is about her music. The "radio friendly" version is lacking that courage. Sorry.

Are you sure that vocal effect is the original at the ":the worst posture I have to stare at ..."? I swear I downloaded this in 2004 I guess right before my then girl friend went to mexico.
