I love how her songs play on metaphors. "I spent all I had to get it back, and now it seems I've been outbidded." "Devastated at the rate you fell below me." His love/he symbolizes an item at an auction. She did everything in her power to get him back, but to no avail. There was a higher "bidder," who is the girl her man cheated on her with.

Well said, but I don't entirely blame the public. There was three years between Tidal and When the Pawn... (which is an extremely slow follow up to a triple platinum debut album), six more years until Extraordinary Machine, seven more years until The Idler Wheel, and it will have been eight more years after that when Fetch the Bolt Cutters is released. You can argue that we've benefited from her slow pace as she's made nothing but outstanding albums, but you also can't deny that us devoted fans have remarkable patience.
@michaelglanowski7635 Жыл бұрын
Superior version. The way she sings the word "Cold" @ 2:51 so shakily, sounds like she really is shivering cold! It's like the man's cold actions caused her a literal emotional reaction of shivering because of it. This is absent in the released version. Anyone else ever notice this? I love the way Fiona sneaks in subtle details like this!

Ive heard this song when it was leaked around 2002 or 2003. I was shocked by this song. I had never heard a song like this one before. It touched my soul deeply and became my favourite song from all time. It's 2019 and i still couldnt find a song that topped it. It's the song of my lífe. If perfection exits, it's called Oh Well by Fiona Apple, produced by the genious Jon Brión.

If not for Fiona Apple and this song 99% of of those leaving comments would never have known the word or meaning of 'STENTORIAN' and 101.9% would never have heard or known there was a term for 'HYPNIC JERK', one of my personal favorites of everything I discovered since I began the "Learning language, Linguistics, Locutions and idioms with Fiona".

They're from a leaked version that hit the internet about a year before the version we got. Sony decided the album wasn't "commercial" and made her re-record it with a different producer. I prefer the production for the most part in the official release, and she subdues her vibrato quite a bit as well, usually to good benefits. In fact, a lot of songs don't change at all. The biggest casualty is this song, which loses its emotional punch in the official release. I miss this version every single time I listen to the official album.
@pampoovey67224 жыл бұрын
@@kruks Oh Well goes from a song of passionate despair to a rote number. I think she was much more expressive on the Brion recordings. The vibrato is part of the point. She was so passionate. Compare and contrast the line "What wasted unconditional love".

Unpopular opinion; I like the Mike Elizondo released version better than the Jon Brion version. Don't get me wrong, they're both very good, but these sound like demos (I know it wasn't finished) and the final version sounds set in stone and firm. I don't know. I love both of them though. Fiona's so amazing
@jeromedixon69296 жыл бұрын
Though I still like the jon Brion version more in this state, if this version was actually finished, and mixed and mastered, this would have been absolutely incredible.
@abusepotential70715 жыл бұрын
I prefer the Jon Brion version, but I also understand why even Fiona herself might have preferred the album mix. A lot of these songs are more raw on this version -- it seems like she was dealing very honestly with the feelings she was describing here, and some of her singing sounds like she was in pain. The album versions are much more polished and dispassionate, like she had a bit more time to get distance from the songs.

@@abusepotential7071 - Agreed completely. Most of the songs benefit from her more controlled singing, but this song loses so much emotion from the rerecorded version.
