actually, she was the one who wasn't satisfied with the original version. she canned it and wanted to remake the whole thing into what was ultimately released.

@sebox. I agree. I really like the released album as whole. The unreleased one is somehow grander and more complex. The released one is much more intimate and that really works in it's favor. This is the only song I don't really like on the released album. I like this version better.

I’ve never heard the Jon Brion version of the album and this is my favorite song on the album, so I decided to check it out… I love Brion’s work and was excited to hear his spin on Fiona’s music. This version just isn’t as good.

So dramatically different from the released version - in my opinion, the unreleased versions of this song, Not About Love, O' Sailor, Please Please Please, & Red Red Red are far superior.

I think there was a small error in the lyrics done by the poster. It's not "My eyes got fixed when my mind got soft" it's "when my mind gets so" referring to when you stare off in space when you're really thinking about something and you're not seeing what you're looking at.

I've heard both versions of Extraordinary Machine (Fiona's and Jon Brion's)... I liked Fiona's version much better. Brion's version sounds too cartoonish. That's why she fought to get her version released.
