Mechanical horns are for sure no joke. My 7002T is louder than the SpectrAlert Advance as one going off in a room won’t make me cover my ears unless I were to be right under it. My 7002T however makes me cover my ears from across the room and even vibrates my body a bit when I go near it. Even in this video, the mechanical horns basically drown out that advance. Those must be as loud if not louder than a 7002T

This system sounds better than the modernized system at my high school. Notifer FACP, already has issues. Several notification appliances squeal in continuous, half the strobes don't flash in sync, stairwell horns are bugging out, the sprinkler system isn't in good shape after a few years (pipe leaks, some having to be removed from classrooms, only half the school has sprinklers), half the pulls are smashed, damaged, drawn on, scratched, etc., and worst of all the panel tends to crash when tests are conducted because the annunciators will go from the standard temporal buzz to a continous buzz with the LCD's reading SYSTEM CRASH (something along those lines). When the Notifier guy was there, all he did was run a standard test, let it cycle a few times, reset system (crashed during reset), rebooted it, and scanned it for viruses and bugs. He left right after, didn't inform the custodians or administrators. The system is still acting up, and with it getting warmer, tests are going to be more common so we meet state requirements for drills.

Kyle Genthon Notifiers piss me off.

Notifier FACP's don't work well with System Sensor equipment, esepcially the smokes. Troubles frequent with the smoke relays, sometimes causing the smoke to actually trip the system.

***** All depends on the company that installed the system. In my case, the company had no idea what panel to use for the sprinkler addon, which inturn is also stressing out the stairwell NAC's which control the stairwell horns, smokes, duct detectors, and sprinklers.

Strobes rarely fail, lol. The only problem I see is that horns manufactured by Faraday, like these, have contact issues and are more likely to fail when installed near a doorway to outside. Despite several working fine as outdoor horns. I suspect corrosion, oxidation or sticky dust... If multiple ones sound like they're at a low volume and/or a dead strobe, then I would suspect a wiring problem in a wall, if not the panel...

Annunciators are not just there to reset and silence the main reason they are in the front lobby of just about every building is so the fire dept knows where the fire is. Also if the main panel is in a locked room in the basement often people won't see a trouble indication on the system hence why there is an annunciatior by the main entrance so staff can tell if they need to call a service company. Interesting; I'm surprised they didn't just use a Simplex 4100-series panel or whatever when they initially installed the system. This also kind of reminds me of the campus center at my friend's university. They apparently used to have a Standard system, but in the mid-90s they replaced most of it (except a few heat sensors) with a Simplex 4100 system initially set up with zone adapter modules for use as a conventional system (though some addressable devices were added over the years), and they have similar electromechanical Simplex 4903 horn/strobes, along with TrueAlert horn/strobes in the renovated areas.
@brettman2739 жыл бұрын
Simple answer to this: Simplex is insanely expensive . Beyond insane actually. Taxpayers buy fire alarms for schools, and Panels can be replaced with equivalent without upgrading. That is not the first Simplex Panel that building had.
@RJARRRPCGP7 жыл бұрын
I suspect that's Tyco's fault... Because they seemed to be more popular in the 1990s... At least since the 2010s, it looks like they're more likely to go to Notifier or Silent Knight, especially Vermont... But, I dunno if Simplex was ever as popular in Vermont? Vermont and western New Hampshire were more likely to have FCi and Wheelock. Except for maybe the True Alert, it looks like Simplex jumped the shark! :(

I actually read up on this high school. I know the name but I won't reveal. The land this school is on used to be a farm until the late 60s. Then the farm came down so the town could have a high school which opened for the 1970-1971 school year. So that Standard panel was probably manufactured in the late 60s. And I would guess they remodeled the school sometime between 1994 to 1998 with some new wings and the Simplex system. And it looks as though the contractor in the 60s and 70s then in the 90s cheaped out on getting the school sprinkled. Though I see many unsprinkled buildings, I'd hate to see the 2003 Station Nightclub fire happen again in this school on account of a stunt of poor judgement

Sounds right. Let's see if you are.. It doesn't really matter anymore as the company I worked for at the time no longer exists, it's been years, and schools are public property, the school in this video is East Aurora High School in the small rural suburb of Buffalo, NY of the same name. The middle school video is the same district. There are no legal consequences of filming on public property, and any confidentiality agreement implied by my company evaporated with them. The company that bought them out is a joke in Western New York that just got bought out themselves by some giant crapola companh so I won't bother mentionimg them. So there you go.

It's simple: you cannot replace any part of a fire alarm with used parts. Ever. And you cannot buy from Simplex. Ever. So if it breaks, it gets replaced with what's available.

The Silent Knight dialer is ancient; it's what we put in many years ago (and frankly...pretty good stuff, tons of it still in use). So when we took over monitoring the system we put it in because we can't program the Simplex panel. Personally, I Wouldnt have done it that way...all we get at our central station from that giant system is a general fire or trouble trip. Would have been better to recommend paying Simplex to reprogram the internal dialer to call us so we at least get zone info...the panels do Contact ID and several other protocols .

See below, I plan on uploading more. Some of them are boring, yes, but I do enjoy my work and I am an avid collector of older stuff as you've probably seen in my videos. To be honest most of this newer stuff is kind of boring. I have to be careful with respect to anonymity of locations and people but will try to not just record my feet and the floor...
@Goldenrod6369 жыл бұрын
brettman273 I understand that also. Personally this is just my opinion and you don't need to respect it, but I like electromechanical horns in continuous rather than in code-3 so I hope you don't change the system.

how long was it to do an inspection of the entire building? I've never seen a one floor high school before
@brettman2739 жыл бұрын
+Landon Lefevre This one takes about four hours - it can be done in less but since it's bi-annual I'm usually a little more thorough. The vast majority of the inspections I do are quarterly.

The alarms at my school are really not that loud but they are on continus which is annoying Tornado : Code 3 Fire : Continus

Maybe continuous wasn't the best for those alarms...

I've watched the part with the darkened auditorium a few times and maybe the janitor/custodian mistook when you said "Almost done" for that it was ok to turn the lights off. I noticed you yell that shortly before going in there just a thought.

No, he was dealing with some teacher that was bitching about the alarms.

brettman273 I've told the teacher that he was blnotified that a test was being conducted and that the more I get asked questions and so on the longer the alarms will go off

Is the one at 2:25 from an NAC extender with a bad cap??? LOL. A bad filtering cap would basically make the NAC act just like a Firelite MS-5024, which is FWR.
@brettman2739 жыл бұрын
Interesting...the NAC extender is indeed a Fire Lite unit. It never occurred to me that the output might be FWR... makes sense now. I do quite a few smaller systems with 5024s and many of the horns are electromechanical and sound like dyning giraffes too. 👍
@RJARRRPCGP9 жыл бұрын
OK, some FireLite systems don't have filtering at all and while the electromechanical horns won't be killed, AFAIK, I heard that can damage recent Simplex strobes! Simplex electromechanical horns are manufactured by Faraday, whose Tecumseh, Michigan plant was shut down in 2003 I have heard. The Gentex GMS and GMH are the same horn with a different grille.

I've always wanted to pull a fire alarm but I didn't want the punishment for doing it
@brettman2737 жыл бұрын
I admire your restraint; while it's true that the FBI probably won't come and throw you in jail for such an offense I would take the opportunity to remind everyone that in almost all cases when a monitored fire alarm is activated, central stations do not verify them. They simply contact the local PSAP for that location and they will dispatch fire. Fire departments will almost always run hot to calls like this at least until it is confirmed that there is no fire. This involves exceeding speed limits, passing through red lights, etc. The risk of an accident or injury to both first responders and the public is something we all consider acceptable in emergency situations; however, if a civilian or first responder is injured or ends up taking a dirt nap as a result of a false alarm...well...now you're dealing with some serious business.

9:32 those panels we’re definitely older than the modern system (the top one at least)
@brettman2733 жыл бұрын
The top gutted one that is used as a splice box is the original Standard panel. THe tall rectangular one down low is a Silent Knight 5207 that's used only as a dialer. The Standard panel is ate 1950s, the Silent Knight is 1980s-earlyu 1990s-ish.
