I am 65yrs, when I was a child my Dad told me a story of when he was a child, we grew up about 700ft away from the train tracks that also had a split off that went to other city's and towns with cargo but the main line went towards the south east of Ma. the story he told me was that when it came to the crossing he would look down the tracks and the steam locomotive would be traveling towards him, he said it looked like a giant monster and as back when I was a child I remember the gatesmen coming out and lighting flares to warn of oncoming trains. the world seemed so simple then, unlike today where someone would like you to forget the world was ever that good growing up!

I’m 27 and so wish that I got to live in a time like that. Things aren’t as great as people would like to pretend they are. People aren’t connected anymore, I’m fortunate enough to have experienced a bit of life before cell phones and the internet really took over. The generation coming up right now will never be able to imagine what that was like. Sad

Im 20 I don't really live too close to train tracks but still get to hair trains once in a while every time we ever went on vacation we would go down to I forget where exactly but they have a couple of old trains on display in a couple of really old diesels too I don't even know ever going to get a chance to go on vacation again mainly because of a few reasons don't know how well are two cats are going to do we don't even know if our vehicle is going to decide to behave because our vehicles are known for breaking days or the day of when we leave to go on vacation but then again our truck is more reliable than our 96 Jeep. Even though our truck is a 78 Chevy truck we rarely have to deal with problems with it

@williamsantangelo I too, am 71 and lived through that period in history, yet for such a much too short period of time. The Diesels made their full-time appearance here in the early 1960's. My father was a rail-roader. Part of a small crew of men, of whom worked for and lived in railroad housing, as did my mother, older brother and two younger sisters. May the last salute I hear...

Beautiful line up of locomotives, even at the end there were different ones. The bull noses are such good memories of the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and early 80s. They are still the quintessential diesel for many rail fans. They were 'the new look' after a century of steam engines..

I'm an old guy and the Kanawha (Berkshire) was more impressive to me. 🙂 Yes, the F7 looked beautiful, and the sound of that 2 Stroke Detroit pounding away is always soothing. The only shame is, if CSX wants to put their name on the side of the tender, they should have got her running again. Getting dueling sounds of an EMD horn and a 2-8-4 whistle would have been REALLY something. But Hey, they both look a lot better going down the rail than rusting on a siding...

Hey, I love steamers also. I ran my first steamer, of over a dozen retired ones ranging from 9 tons to 440 tons in size, over 65½ years ago and my last one two months ago today. I understand all of the excitement created by that special move which attracted hundreds, maybe thousands, of people over its distance. What I'm curious about is how the assumed professional rails who were accomplishing the move apparently forgot to display a marker on the last car to show the train as rules book "complete". Or perhaps it was not secured well enough and fell off along the way? Jaw Tooth clearly showed the rear end of the train, and a marker doesn't appear to be visible.
