I haven't really seen anyone try to explain the game's gun meta to Jonathan, and given that he's already made like 3 videos on the subject, I think I'll state some of the core information on the game. Destiny 2 has weapon types (Auto Rifle, Pulse Rifle, Sidearm, etc) as well as different elements. Weapon types include: "Primary Ammo" weapons which presumably take lighter rounds and don't require "ammo drops" in-game anymore, hence the infinite ammo counter: Auto Rifle: Assault rifle. This category includes rifles that act as heavier battle rifles as well as ones that would act as lighter bullet hoses and everything in between. Pulse Rifle: A burst-fire rifle. Scout Rifle: A semi-automatic "designated marksman" type rifle, usually quite accurate. Sidearm: Typical handguns, usually semi-auto or burst-fire, but some are full-auto. Hand Cannon: Big, heavy revolver-type weapons. Submachine guns, which usually follow an MP7 or P90 format. "Special Ammo" weapons: Shotguns, either slug or pellets. Snipers, self explanatory. Grenade Launchers, which can either form "waves" on the ground, or fire a bouncy remote-detonated bomb. Fusion Rifles, which aren't self-explanatory: Fusion Rifles charge up and fire some kind of short-range energy bolts. Purely a D2 thing. Glaives, which are medeival polearm-type weapons which can project energy shields and shoot energy projectiles. "Heavy Ammo" weapons: Heavy grenade launchers, usually drum-fed Rocket launchers Swords Machine Guns, which are fully automatic, usually belt-fed weapons. Linear Fusion Rifles, which are like Fusion Rifles, but instead of firing a burst they fire a single long-range, precision bolt. Elements include: Kinetic, which is just regular bullets. Arc, which is basically "lightning". Void, which is some kind of cosmic singularity type energy. Solar, which is like 'solar plasma'. Stasis, which is made of "Darkness" and projects an ice effect. Every gun has 1 weapon type and 1 element, so there could be a Solar Auto Rifle or a Kinetic Pulse Rifle. As for the HUD and how weapon switching works: The Game offers a Kinetic Slot, an Energy Slot, and a Heavy slot for weaponry. -All Heavy weapons are elemental weapons. -Primary and Special ammo weapons fit in both Kinetic and Energy slots, but only Heavy weapons fit in the Heavy slot and Heavy weapons can only be put in said slot. This is why you see the player cycling through three weapons. -A little icon by the weapon indicates the element: no icon means Kinetic, an orange flame means Solar, a blue electricity icon means Arc, a purple circle black hole type icon means Void, and a dark blue ice-type icon means Stasis. -Stasis, despite being an element, fits in the Kinetic slot since it's not made of "Light Energy," it is made of "Darkness." All of this information gets twisted or outright discarded when Exotics or some unique "Legendary" weapons are brought in. Aside from effects that just boost the weapon's statistical advantage over non-Exotic counterparts, some Exotics have drastically different function compared to non-Exotic weapons. Eyes of Tomorrow fires six rockets at once, Gjallarhorn can fire 2 cluster rockets, Graviton Lance is a scout rifle that acts like an accurate pulse rifle, Lord of Wolves is a shotgun that acts like a pulse rifle mixed with a fusion rifle, Jotunn shoots a single homing fireball instead of a fusion burst, Bastion fires kinetic projectiles in a spread instead of a fusion burst, etc. These "inconsistencies" make Exotic weapons truly Exotic even within the game they feature in. All things considered, even though there's hundreds of guns, the vast majority of them still have a unique identity. Whether they're worth covering or not is up to you, though Exotics will always be unique and interesting. P.S. There's also "Weapon Archetypes" but they're just a way of making different guns within the same class feel different. One Auto-Rifle might feel like a SCAR-H, another might feel like an M4, and some might feel like a drum fed bullet hose. Sidearm archetypes include full-auto, burst fire, etc. Pulse archetypes include accuracy or high fire rates. So on. Exotics don't have archetypes, they have "Exotic Perks" instead, giving them their completely unique function.

@@ResillyusXD there was a linear fusion rifle in D1, though it wasn't identified as such back then IIRC: Sleeper Simulant. It also used to fire a 3-round burst with the lore being that the first round(s) would clear a path for the singularity round to travel though. I also like how Jonathan's take on the Grand Overture was more accurate before he saw it in action. Shame the demonstration of it didn't show the rocket launcher function, that would have been a fun reaction to watch

They are all pretty realistic, but approach how "future tech" may be developed in different ways. Hakke: brutalist and simple, basically what we already have but touched up. Suros: "designer" rifles with a larger casing that encorporates smooth lines and clean angles, not unlike a sports car. Looks more futuristic than it actually is. Omolon: True next-gen that expands on current technology. It actually uses weaponized 3d printer technology: polymer resin is forced into the chamber and "flashed" from a liquid to a solid using radiation, and that hardened projectile is launched with hydrolic pressure. Sometimes the resin is instead used to store energy and be consumed as fuel. Very convoluted way to achieve the same basic action. Veist: mostly conventional, but each rifle has an on board AI that dynamically adjusts aspects of the weapon to optimize results. Has all custom magazines and loading actions to support this.

Perhaps when the hammer drops, it strikes a piezoelectric element that then electrically ignites each charge in the cylinder in sequence.

Canonically it’s hinted to be a cut down red death which did almost the same thing, but in all honesty there should be a crimson ornament that makes it resemble the red death more like one of those AR/AK pistols that exist

7:17 ; I mostly though of it being akin to the M79 "Blooper" grenade launcher. Though, to be fair, the style itself does look like the HK69 grenade launcher. I probably thought the Blooper because of it's iconic use in T2 during the office scene after the mini-gun.

If Johnathan reads the comments, he's very close on Cloudstrike. The 'barrel' section is actually a Shepherd's Crook, and is an artefact with power of its own. I believe that in the lore, long before the game takes place, an Eliksni (one of the alien races in the game) used the Crook to harness Arc (lightning) energy and wield it for themselves. And as seems to be a theme with Destiny, we turn it into a gun, which happens to a lot of different artefacts, objects, people and gods in the lore. Thought this would be fun to clarify/share.

Leaving a comment here as I’ve just watched all the Destiny vids and I’d like to address some concerns Jonathan has had so far. First off, the majority of weapons he’s seen so far, namely the exotics, are custom made and highly personalized or prototypes that allow for a level of eccentricity in their cosmetics, there’s little in the way of mass produced weapons in Destiny save for the more common brand name legendaries which all have design philosophies in common and vary from designer to designer, Hakke, Suros, etc. Secondly, ammunition is more of a suggestion than anything, the majority of kinetic ammunition is made out of glimmer, a type of programmable matter that acts as projectile, propellant, and most other things. It can be incredibly dense or the opposite and explains the lack of sense to most magazine and feed systems as they’re more like glimmer repositories allowing for ammunition to take its shape as needed, typically the only thing distinct to the gun is the magazine itself in this case. On the glimmer topic it also makes up a good chunk of the manufacturing process so anything that would be considered wasteful or unnecessary on the machining side of things can be ignored because everything’s effectively 3D printed with a highly versatile all purpose material. Lastly, energy weapons, usually they just run off some kind of standard energy cell, the magazine as it would be, some also run off projected plasma, sometimes they have casings as well but usually that’s just glimmer being used as a disposable heatsink on a per shot basis. As for spent casings on the ballistic weaponry side of things I’ve got no real explanation there it’s mostly just a design choice. Also weight is more or less irrelevant save for the handling of a weapon that’s currently used, in terms of ammo storage and carrying any additional weapons on your person they’re actually somewhere else and near instantly teleported to you when you need them.
@maonyghtstorm86022 жыл бұрын
To tack onto this, many of the Exotics so far have been seen with ornaments involved. Many of the designs are questionable at best. On the topic of Graviton Lance, it's effectively a particle accelerator. I couldn't explain the magazine as anything beyond a possible thermal repository that is monitored by internal systems to be ejected and swapped as needed.

So, correction on what Jonathan said around 19:50, Pulse Rifle and Auto Rifle do not indicate the type of ammunition fired, they indicate the weapon's firing behaviour. Pulse, being a bit of a synonym of Burst, indicates that they fire in bursts, usually 3 or 4 rounds, sometimes 2 (like Graviton Lance), sometimes 5. Auto Rifles fire Full-Auto. Hope that clears up any confusion on that front :)

So crimson has a three round burst and a bayonet because its literally the front end of an assault rifle disguising itself disguised/by its owner as a revolver because the gun is evil and in universe is meant to be destroyed on sight. It doesn't function like a revolver because it isn't really a revolver, its just been space magicked to look and fire like a revolver whilst still retaining the ballistic properties of the original rifle. The original version of the gun is an assault rifle called red death

The thing about Cloudstrike is essentially that someone took the central cane-part and surrounded it with the gun components. iirc it was essentially a magic staff used a few hundred years back by a more evil-aligned lightbearer. After his death, the staff was turned into a gun and essentially fires bolts of lightning, safe to say, the gun falls more into the 'science fantasy' field that a lot of the exotic guns in D2 end up falling into.

@Big-Keat782 жыл бұрын
the graviton lance is basically shooting two small black holes at whatever you're aiming at and the barrel is like a particle accelerator of sorts, the gun itself is mainly made of a carbon fiber like material and copper as its electrically conductive and thus makes throwing black holes a little easier, the "small universe" is where most of the copper would be but the person who recorded the game had an ornament on (a visual mod to change the way it looks based on in game lore), hope this help :)

I wanted to give a little bit of insight about a few of these weapons Arbalest: it does actually shoot a slug similar to a rail gun Fighting Lion: certain types of grenade launchers in Destiny can be manually detonated in air. Fighting Lion does have a perk where the grenade is more bouncy than other grenades Grand Overture: this weapon is meant to be held by a very large enemy unit which is why it has the ribbed grip on top for that enemy to hold Graviton Lance: it shoots mini black holes (that’s about it) Hopefully this helps clear up a few things about them
@beetle47992 жыл бұрын
19:48 The whole concept of Pulse Rifles to Auto Rifles being tied to what type of ammunition isn't really correct. Auto Rifles are just fully automatic weapons while the Pulse Rifles are burst fire weapons. Then there's scout rifles which are just semiautomatic.

When it comes to the categories of weapons, Pulse Rifles fire in bursts, the "Pulse" part of that doesn't always correlate to a purely energized weapon, it's just signifying that it fires in pulses, basically. Also all Pulse Rifles are bullpup rifles, Auto Rifles have traditional front magazine placements aside from those made by the VEIST weapon foundry, which uses P90 style magazines, and Scout Rifles can have traditional, bullpup, or P90 style magazines, although a majority are standard bullpup rifles. Almost all Hand Cannons, with only three exceptions (although mechanically they work the same), also have that on-block reloading system, with a container housing the rounds being inserted into a hollow cylinder, removing the need for loading one round at a time.
