I actually like the fact that leaf litters cause grass block to turn into dirt because that's what happens in real life : they decompose, transform into dirt and nourrish the soil. What is currently a bug might actually become a realistic feature.

The leaf litter looks so unnatural and I can’t explain why. It looks like it takes up to much of a block

They have jagged edges because they were designed to tile well. I agree that it looks a bit odd. If the corners were modified just a little, it might look much less off-putting. As it is, though, it's not so bad when there's only one leaf litter quantity within a block space.
