Great video. If I have to do a dusty job like that I put an old chimney fan on the top. Stops the fine dust from spreading.

Hello thank you for your post. I see where your coming from with externally air fed stoves. I don't know how much of an effect on heat output if it was drawing cold air externally than re using warm air internally. Interesting thought. At the minute though a direct air kit to the back of the stove is not recognised by building control so another air vent still has to be fitted. The UK is a bit behind when it comes to stove technology with the likes of Scandinavia externally air feeding and going straight off the back of stoves horizontally through walls is the norm. I think once recognised by building regs a lot of new builds will all externally air feed and it might make a big difference then.

Thank you for the reply . I went into a house in Lutterworth in the 70's where air was being taken from the floor cavity to get round a very well set up collection of double glazing & door seals . The UK has the advantage & disadvantage of being in a temperate climate , the Scandis , are one ( or two ) jumps ahead , 'cos they have to be . It was going into a shopping centre , where the double doors acted as a 20 person air lock got me .

I'm thinking of constructing a false chimney breast at home To keep up with codes, can I build it out of timber and line it all in hardie board then use brick slips on the whole of the recess... will be using insulated flue from the fire through the ceiling and into roof space... will probably get hetas fitters to do pipe work though... just wondered if timber was in code to use ........
@thecosystovecompany7402
@thecosystovecompany7402 7 жыл бұрын
Darren Devey timber couldn't be used behind the hardie backer within the fireplace chamber but could be used above where the insulated flue would be. Your better off using blockwork so you have something a bit more substantial or if you want to go down the stud route steel stud is best and can be used to construct the chamber as well. The hetas fitter would need good access to install the stove so if building out of stud leave the plasterboard off the breast so he can get in to do what he's got to do.

Did you use standard drywall on the sides? And what kind of stone is that you're using for base? I've got a regular fire place and I want to remove it and install wood stove in case we see another winter like the last.... would be nice to have as additional heat source and place to cook on top of if I were to loose power for any extended period of time.. Great looking installation.

@stgeorge6947
@stgeorge6947 6 жыл бұрын
Peter Balascak you can get dry wall adhesive or dot n dab which lets you stick plasterboard straight on brickwork. Just make sure you use plenty and use a little level. Probably too late hope it went well lol
@stgeorge6947
@stgeorge6947 6 жыл бұрын
To finish you would either plaster it or use scrim tape and joint cement. Then paint it. Probably easyer to make up a mdf box at the correct dimensions then put in into the fireplace then put angle beads on the outside edges and plaster the chimney breast. You have to paint both sides of MDF to stop it bowing (incase anyone does this) 😁

Trippy Uk MDF inside a fireplace opening with a live woodburning stove? Doesn't sound ideal, at worst potentially a fire risk surely? Best bet would be scamolex board- the reeded version in particular is very attractive for a fireplace opening.

Theres a brick arch in the breast that you cant see. This is part of the original build. On most properties the fire openings have been narrowed and brought lower over the years using additional bricks
