IMO, you skipped the most substantive differences - The hammer can hit behind you knocking off ticks on your back. The hammer allows you to wear heavier armor, whereas the staff almost requires some etir armor, leaving you more vulnerable. A more comprehensive test would be having three seekers or two seekers and a soldier (common groupings) and seeing which weapon was more consistently able to take them down quicker. That may depend on play style. Gist is - if you like to face tank groups of mobs and watch them get pushed all over, the hammer is for you. If you like watching things burn and striking from a distance, go with the staff.

I think the point of the demolisher is missed by a lot of people. Besides the fact that you can completely cheese the queen with it, clearing infested mines, such as behind closed doors and all ground brood eggs, is very easy. But the reason it’s ALWAYS my second weapon in the Mistlands is not because of 1v1, but 1v many. If you get swarmed by seekers or ticks, the knockback is too good. In addition, the second usage of the name is a good reason to carry it; with a few swings I can demolish an entire dvergr outpost without the need of a stonecutter. Since I need tons of black marble for my builds, this time savings is incalculable.

One hard thing to tell really is survivability. You did this with damage turned off, so can't tell which one you would survive more using. Using the Hammer, you got hit a lot and it seems it will be hard to kill the higher level seekers and even the soldier using that because you have to get close to hit him. It would be nice to see some of these tests with damage on and see how to fight them in a practical scenario.

Respectfully, hard disagree on the logic at 10:32. The staff using Eitr is what makes it the win because it allows you to save stamina for survivability and allows flexibility to use other weapons since you're not using as much stamina (I personally use sword and board w/ staff of embers, for example). The fact that the hammer is already cumbersome AND requires the same resource as your movement and other weapons makes you have to choose between doing damage or mobility/survivability, whereas with the staff I can out run enemies, dodge, climb (up those damned mistlands cliffs) and then still be able to lob off a couple fireballs while my stamina regens. The key difference that makes the staff better than the hammer is that you can use one resource while the other regenerates, so the speed at which stamina regens being higher than Eitr isn't as much of a factor as you're implying. It's more about the sustainability the staff allows. The damage numbers of the hammer would have to vastly out class the the staff (which as you've shown, they currently do not) for it to be worth losing the sheer amount of mobility, flexibility, and sustainability that the Staff of Embers allows. PS: Personal opinions and disagreements aside, you clearly put a lot of hard work into this analysis and your leg work is greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work dawg.

I find stamina/mana management way easier using magic. This is because your mana bar can recharge uninterrupted while you're running around, meaning that you can use up stamina when kiting and be ready to attack right after. While this doesn't work the other way around (recharging stamina when using mana), using mana only interrupts stamina recharging but doesn't give you that half second penalty before the bar starts filling up again like it does when using stamina abilites. If you cycle the two bars right, you can fight indefinetely.

Hammer is a beast in infestations to get huge backstab damage through doors and vines. I also like to eat high stamina foods, keep the shield up, and switch weapons to alternate eitr and stamina use - usually with the mistwalker and buckler but that hammer has a home in my magic loadout hotbar too... but I'm in love with the lightning polearm more.

false stam wont be more avail than iter in combat here is the reason.... Iter is not used to run jump or block stam is. lol this means that chances are your stam will not be regening faster. You used god mode in most of thes video but that is somthing very obvious to anyone jamming this game. As in the mists you do much jumping springing more so with terrain of there areas. This again staff wins as the enviro of the mists the staff has a overwhelming advantage with tarrain and the fact you can sprint jump while casting and the cast does not consume further stam. but good video bassed on stats not practacal applications. and this all in all means the staff has more utility uses with its mobility and enviro advantages on top of it.

Firedamage stacks + targets already on fire takes additional firedamage. You will do a little more damage by spaming attacks than letting each attack burn out. For a larger HP target this might effect your testresults. Lets say a creature takes 6 hits with the firestaff, all letting the firedamge burn out between hits. Trying again but this time spaming 5 quick attacks on the target, and the extra fire damage might just do the job? Awesome video, i love all the indepth stats and explanations

Hammers in Valheim have always been criminally underpowered for all their negatives. The worst offender is the Iron Sledge as it's so expensive to create and upgrade. Then it hardly does any more damage than an Iron Mace. All at the cost of loosing your shield, swinging like a slug and moving at a snails pace. All the hammers suffer like this, however. The AOE damage they produce is nowhere near useful enough to justify being so vulnerable. Especially when Seekers are so strong to begin with.
@themorganrobertson

The aoe is horribly underrated. Iron Sledge wipes Crypts through mudpiles with zero danger, and Stag Hammer early game made a joke of swarms of greylings, when that matters.
@lordundeadrat
@lordundeadrat Жыл бұрын
@@themorganrobertson They have their uses. I'm not arguing that. Stag breaker is easily the most useful two handed weapon in the game if you make it early. Attacking skeletons through doors is fantastic. But Stag Breaker is also fairly cheap to make. Hardest part is the bone required. With the Iron Sledge, though, one wonders what it was ever conceived to deal with. It's so expensive that you're unlikely to have one upgraded till you're just about done in the swamps. Then in the mountains it's almost useless save for cave bats. I know people have a lot of fun with the hammers. I'm not saying they can't be useful. Just that they're held back far too much by their uninspiring damage output, mediocre block stats and big movement penalty. If just one of those three things were buffed a little, you'd have a really fun weapon to use. Much more rounded. I had the idea that maybe they should have a direct hit bonus. Where the Aoe damage isn't changed. But squarely landing a blow would do damage equal to the mace of that tec levels special attack. Considering the swing speed of the hammer and the mace special are about the same. That'd make a world of difference.

I use the hammers quite a bit. Because I used a one handed club as my weapon for most of the game, my club skill sits somewhere in the 50s at any given time (depending on skill drain from deaths). I very rarely use a hammer in overland situations except for dealing with ticks, but they absolutely trivialize dungeons. Even if I'm not cheesing mobs by trapping them in doorways or hitting them through walls, the fact that the tight spaces mean the enemies can't surround me allows me to time my swings in such a way that my knockback effect hits them before they can hit me. This is tremendously useful, because trying to charge in against 3 seekers in a tight space with a typical shield and one handed combo typically means i'm either stuck holding up my shield the entire time and thus, can't really swing, or I get chewed up with every swing and take knockback or stagger on top of it and potentially can get locked down. If I were better at parrying, that situation might be more easily managed, but I have a lot of difficulty parrying multiple enemies at once unless their attack animations just happen to line up with each other.

Backstab=Sneak attack Backstab is not a constant buff against all mobs. It only applies when they haven’t been alerted to you yet. The gjall, troll, and seeker soldier are the only mobs with weak spots which apply constant “backstab” bonuses. Troll head, gjall belly, seeker soldier rearend.

staff of embers is gangster in every biome outside of mistlands. it blazes through skeletons, grey dwarves, and trolls in black forest, it significantly reduces death possibility in swamp when you have the ability to rely on only eitr for offense and have all your stamina to block dodge and run. mountains it works against golems since its crush, wolves melt by fire, you are agile enough with enough stamina to dodge them, drakes are meh but with aiming its fantastic. the only time staff of embers is outshined is by frost staff, only because of its slowing effect working against every mob in game.

looking at the test footage, the test is unfair. demolisher damage scales from point of impact with the most damage, back to just a third of damage at the border of the blast radius. i havent seen a single full damage blow so far, while you maximize the damage of each ember staff hit consistently. however, comparing a r anged weapon to a melee weapon is a bad idea in the first place. i played the hammer with the fenrir armor. and like 200 stamina. i was able to run circles around any ground enemy and place my blows very precise that way. i'd say the hammer is the best melee weapon, simply because of the immense CC and good damage combined in one weapon, and if you need to you can parry a lot of damage with it as well. while the ember staff seems to be the best ranged weapon. but in my book the whole eitr mechanic with special foods needed is not my cup of tea. i'd much rather had the mana volume on the staffs. and free choice in terms of foods.

It is not always better to have mixed damage types, since the secondary effects of damage types can suffer from that: - Frost damage slows down targets. - Blunt, Slash, Pierce and Lightning damage fills the stagger bar, leading to a stagger, if you deal enough damage in a short time. - - - Also some weapons have further stagger multipliers, on certain attacks, that only apply on above mentioned dmg types. E.g. two hand hammers do double staggering. - Fire and Poison damage have no secondary effect, and thus are less useful assuming identical damage values. Also dealing the same amount of damage over time, instead of instant, is inferior. Thus Fire and poison weapons are only worth it, if they do more damage than a weapon with the above mentioned damage type. - Spirit damage has no secondary effect, and does no damage at all, if the target is not undead. The secondary effects, are proportional to the damage dealt, of that type, while Blunt, Slash, Pierce and Lightning stack for staggering. So more concentrated one type damage, can be more useful, than mixed damage for triggering a stagger or causing longer slowdowns. E.g. assuming the target has no weaknesses or resistances, a weapon with 100 slash damage would be superior to a weapon with 50 slash + 50 fire damage, since the pure slash weapon staggers the target more often and because of that, does more often double damage.

I am glad Firespark is starting to GET IT ....but not quite lol. Yeah how many hits matter because a simple stat might say a weapon does 10 more damage but if the hits are the same well they are the same. However there is another very important factor and that is your game style and the TIME of the weapon to hit.Also the TIME matters if say in a crowded fight like more than 1 it all matters. A SLOW swing weapon will not allow you to avoid getting hit or move much at all and if you need to move then that weapon will be sort of useless.Then there is one more the TYPE of enemy also matters for various reasons that i already sort of conveyed.

I really don't think that the Eitr usage of the staff is a downside as it frees up all your stamina for running, jumping, dodging etc. The REAL downside of using the staff is that you'll probably be wearing the mage armor which is significantly less protective than carapace armor, and you'll be eating Eitr foods which don't grant much HP. It works well for a hit-n-run strategy. It's just a playstyle thing, the way I see it.

Seeker soldier is parry, jump, throw spear at the weakspot, pick up spear and repeat. Gjall just get under them and start throwing your spear straight up at their weak underbelly. Ticks are the only fiddle where you need to dodge if you miss them when they jump on you from anywhere else than the front but are quickly dealt with due to pierce damage and attack speed.

It's such a complicated comparison that I don't think a chart or a point system can really compare it too accurately. The biggest problem with this comparison is that in order to get full use of the staff of embers (and magic in general) you have to eat eitr foods and wear the eitr weave set. This leaves you with low HP, stamina and armour. So in a direct DPS comparison it's not surprising at all that magic weapons have higher DPS because of the compromises you have to make. Additionally whilst Eitr does regen slower than stamina this is not necessarily a major downside as it still allows you to use your stamina for other uses. Other than that it was a pretty good comparison and i'm glad you didn't conclude with "one weapon is obviously better than the other". Also one other interesting thing which I'm not sure if you've covered is parrying with the staff of protection. Even though it's got the 20x parry bonus removed it's still amazing for parrying as the shield will block any amount of damage (even if the shield has 1hp and the enemy does 200dmg) which allows you to parry with any weapon in the game essentially. This has a number of uses but notably it means you can parry 2 star soldiers/seekers (although it will pop the shield 100% of the time) and you can use other weapons like bows or 1-handed weapons with no shield to parry high damage enemies.

no 100% incorrect bows and crossbows are still way stronger, more so with surprise damage like heaven and earth difference. Melee has parry mult and most secondary attacks has more damage than magic, then it can have 2.5x mult. Bubble is awesome if you're a noob kiter who loses his cool, but it takes damage even when you parry, so it sucks for more aggressive players. Full eitr lvl 100 magic is still weaker than 100 bow you can test it yourself 100 bow will kill 3 loxes in mere secs since first lox is 2 hit while noob fireball will take forever plus will need to run even if they go full eitr because it really just sucks no proof of it actually being good other than panicky people saying it is. lvl 100 magic vs stared gjall then compare to bow 100 same thing. @@datuputi777 Bows scale better with levelling than any other weapon in the game so it's not fair to compare level 100 bow to other level 100 weapons. You do roughly 6x with lvl 100 bow when compared to around 2x with most other weapons. It's unrealistic to assume players are going to have level 100 skills unless they grind an insane amount. On a permadeath run I had around level 51 bow skill when entering Mistlands. Additionally, if you track damage numbers you can parry enemies with magic right before the shield is about to break and still get the parry bonus with magic weapons. You can even parry a 2 star soldier or seeker without staggering or taking damage making it ideal if you want to play aggressively. I agree bows would be stronger at level 100 but it's just unrealistic to compare when most peoples bow stat will be under 50 when entering Mistlands.

its not really that the staff is better its more so that the mobs are all resisted to slash/pierce/blunt while fire is neutral dmg no resist demolish would take half the hits which makes it technically better for brutes and only worse for 2star seekers so its pretty balanced wep wise its just the resist that makes the difference ( also you shouldn't need mto wait out the fire buff to end to atk again fire buffs stack no multiple applications of fire increases the tick dmg and resets the time can get up to like 10dmg/sec from fire ticks just with a torch on fresh chars up from like 3,1/tick on greydwarfs) ps: the only reason i run stagbreaker then replaced with demolisher is that they can dmg mobs through doors/walls/terrain so in dungeons like crypts/swamp crypts ( not as good in infested mine) but terrain walls on base with hoe etc they can dmg through which is the biggest upside of them since they land in middle/other side of wall they hit enemys behind it stagbreaker def the best at it tho didn't test demolisher but its their biggest con for sure (any elemental dmg wep is better for mistlands tho himmfli/mistsword/mage wep/frostnar(kinda broken with slow also) etc)

Magic is actually weaker than melee weapons like how does fireball do 500 damage in 1 hit and knife backstab is in 900s come on even bow does 500s on backstab. you can literally ride soldiers and shoot their bum with bow and deal 270+ of damage while noob fireball needs dot to even match it and probably will never stagger any stared soldier. Truth is its range attack like bow so people lean towards using it even if it will take 90099099000 years killing anything with it.

The hammer is what you use on full melee mode crowd control. Fireball is for mix build. Pure melee is fastest at clearing any stared soldier and seekers same for killing queen more so when you use bonemass power. You can technically kill the queen in 5 min if you can stay up close double stamina food + bonemass. The hammer is to just kill the mobs and push back seekers. No real difference between himmin other than hammer can be done mid air.

The better way to take DPS into account would be to count the number of attacks available if you spam both for 1 minute. This would take the Eitr/Stamina regeneration into account. Faster attack speed means nothing if you're not allowed to swing. Damage per Minute might be a better metric.

Your chart makes no sense lol why would stamina use be green?? That's not a good thing that it uses stamina it should be the other way around. Eitr use should be green on the hammer and red on the staff and vice versa for the hammer.

I have encountered quite a few 2 star soldiers. Miniboss is accurate description as they do seem to have larger hp pools than some bosses. Worst encounter was in a mine. A 2star soldier and 2 no star soldiers at the bottom of a staircase. Staff of embers handled them easy as they could not get up the spiral to me but my skeletons died instantly going down. The hammer would have left me in the same situation as the skeletons, dead before i could have done anything of mention.

I think the staff is way superior to any melee weapon. The fact it's range and does not take stamina, letting you use your stamina for sprinting and dodging. Where the melee weapons have to share the same resource (stamina) with attacking, dodging and sprinting.
@richardlaking3171

One additional consideration is the overall gear build you're using with each of these - Demolisher build will have a lot more health and stamina than a staff build, and will also have a significantly higher armour rating (assuming you're taking the robes for the staff) so you 'should' be harder to kill from a few lucky attacks. Conversely the Staff allows you to use your stamina exclusively for running, and does still offer a reasonable amount of protection if you're combo'ing it with the staff of protection, however if you get ganked by say a few deathsquitos i'm not sure how well you'd survive with the staff given the much lower armour rating. There's also the slight downside of getting caught at an awkward time without enough eitr to refill the shield if you've just burned most of it on fireballs. Arguably here what it really comes down to is what kind of build you really like playing, be it a full tank, ranged DPS, etc

No not really there's vast difference in damage beetween a krom swing and fireballs and parry melee combinations are really head and shoulder above magic in terms of damage even against bosses(no parry bonuses) like the queen it's just most people are afraid to melee because they died so many times that way. There's also no restriction to changing playstyle once bonemass phases out eat buke berry and become an ugly mage once again.

So let me see if i can put together what matters....time to swing weapon,TYPE of enemy resistance/weapon damage types,movement penalty,AOE,Knockback,how many foes at a time and of course max damage.Basically you have to just try a weapon and see what works for YOU because simply looking on paper will likely not give you a good indication of what is best for you given the type of fight you are doing and your play style.

Being able to tap in to 3 separate resource pools is a huge advantage for the staff. As you use the hammer you are also using up your pool of resources for running/jumping and the like. While wielding the staff you save all of your stamina for those purposes. Additionally, the biggest advantage in health to come from Mistlands is the Staff of Protection. With a maximum capability of providing 700 shielding all the way down to a minimum of 200. Anyone using the staff of protection has an advantage in survivability. However, it requires that you consume eitr food, with that taken into consideration if you want to even be able to tap into the highest capabilities with regards to survivability you must consume some amount of eitr food. This doesn't work too well with the hammer, but as should be obvious works great with the staff of embers. For the combo of weaponry or equipment (as shields are part of it in the case of 1 handed weapons) the clear advantage is with eitr using equipment. The staff of protection is just too strong. A discussion about weaponry that leaves it out, is missing what is perhaps the single greatest advantage offered in equipment via mistlands content.

@FireSpark81 It just seemed odd that this was a debate. This game has the most lenient parry window ( and dodge)of any game I have played; which I think is a great thing. Agree 100%. He also doesn't use parries, which is a HUGE buff to damage. Personally, I still use the spear, as I love playing close ranged combat. The throw is fast and safe, and great for taking out Gjalls. But that's just personal pref. I also use a frost staff so I can attack without draining stamina all the time. I haven't tried it yet, but I suspect that Mistwalker is better than Demolisher. It's 83.5 per hit vs 75.5 per hit. It's also faster attacks for even more dps. And you can have parry shield for even more damage.

@@Firespark81 I actually missed that part. Thanks for pointing out lol. But I don't know why someone should say that in the first place: It is slowing you down massively, the attackspeed is very slow and damage is also very low. The only good thing is the massive aoe and the push back. Both is not needed when you fight Seekers or Seeker soldiers. You can see this when you try to fight with it. You get hit allmost every time you land a hit. The only thing where this is a good weapon is against ticks. Also the terrain in mistlands works against you as you drain more stamina because you are slower when equipped. I don't see how this could actually work.
